Forward to a Friend
Greetings!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On

The Rev. Dr. Gordon McBride
Gordon McBrideWe are saddened by the death of the Rev. Dr. Gordon K. McBride, early in the morning on July 10. Gordon touched many lives.  After retiring as Rector at Grace St. Paul's, he shared his considerable gifts with St. Philip's as a parishioner and one of our affiliated clergy. Services are scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 16 at Grace St. Paul's, with the Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona, celebrating. We are extraordinarily privileged at St. Philip's to have been able to share some time with Gordon, however brief. Let us join together to celebrate, honor, and give thanks for Gordon's life and ministry, and to support his wife and family.

Reflections on an Interfaith Journey to Israel

Eighteen Travelers from our congregation and Temple Emanu-El embarked on an extraordinary interfaith journey to Israel, June 2-14. Their journey featured memorable visits to Christian and Jewish sites throughout Israel and teachings by the Rev. John Kitagawa along the way. On Sunday, July 18, at 10:15 a.m. in the East Gallery, the group will share memories and reflections from this Interfaith Journey, plus a select few of their literally thousands of photos. Attend and learn why one of the sojourners remarked, "this trip has changed us all in some way."

Your Voice Can Be Heard!
On July 25, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz, come to a vital issues meeting, convened by Beth Brouillette, Brad Stroup, and the Pima County Interfaith Council. This is your opportunity to join with PCIC in working to fix Arizona at this November's elections. Concerns will be formulated at this meeting, to be presented at an interfaith Accountability Conference at the Tucson Convention Center on September 26. All major candidates for public office in Arizona will be at the September 26 conference. Save both dates, and be sure to attend both meetings -- on behalf of our communities and our churches. This is a time when the size and volume of our presence and witness are essential.

St. Philip's fourth Sunday home maintenance workshop series continues this summer, featuring a two-part series on painting during July and August. The St. Philip's "Phixers," a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church, sponsor this series of classes on general home maintenance topics. Professionals from the community teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so participants should dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes.  Participants may also want to bring a bag lunch. July 25 at 12:30 p.m. in the East Gallery: Perfect Preparation for Painting. Randy Wilsterman, area manager for Frazee Paint, will discuss proper preparation for painting. August 22, at 12:30 p.m. in the West Gallery: Perfect Painting. Jim Valentine of Frazee Paint will talk about the proper technique for painting walls and trim.

Plan Now to Attend Summer Journey
working with wireSummer Journey, a popular and exciting program for young people in 4th through 8th grade, is offered July 26-30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Summer Journey continues the theme of the Summer Arts program in June: the concept of pieces fitting into a whole (below are shown the individual collages which were combined into an art piece that hangs in the Children's Chapel). Participants will apply the knowledge gained in making collage to creating mosaic pieces, exploring how each person fits into God's plans and how each can help do God's work in the world. Summer Journey includes a field trip. The cost is $85 for the week. Partial scholarships are available. Numbers are limited, so please register as soon as possible. For information and to register, call Rosalind Garcia at 299-6421, ext. 43.

making collagesThe After-School Music and Homework Program would like to send our participants to Summer Journey and also to Choir Camp in August. If you can help fund a scholarship in full or in part, please contact Garmon Ashby, Rosalind Garcia, or Bruce Phillips at 299-6421. Thanks!

Les Joies de Vivre -- Chamber Music of Poulenc
Friends of Music's popular summer recital series continues on Friday, July 30, at 7 p.m. in the Music Center. Enjoy a languid Parisian evening with a veritable feast of the chamber music of Francis Poulenc, featuring Sandy Schwoebel, flute, Cynthia Behmer, oboe, Kevin Justus, clarinet, Cassandra Bendickson, bassoon, Steve Kilburn, trumpet, Gregory Helseth, horn, Elena Todd, soprano, and Michael Dauphinais, piano, in various combinations. Hear Poulenc's well-known sonatas for flute, oboe, clarinet, and clarinet/bassoon, plus Quatre Poemes de Max Jacob for soprano and the Sextet in C Major for piano and wind quintet. Admission by donation.

Sermon project"Comfy Space" Worship August 1
Our next "Comfy Space" service will be on Sunday, August 1, at 9 a.m. in the Music Center. We will continue Summer Journey's theme of how we all fit together in God's world. Rosalind Garcia will present the sermon activity, and Bonnie Bird will provide piano music for the service (shown at right is the sermon activity from the last "Comfy Space" service, a puzzle painted by Stella Lopez). "Comfy Space" services seek to provide worship experiences for members of the Christian community who like to wiggle in church, as well as those who worship with them. Sermon activities, music, lessons, and songs are designed to hold the interest of young persons while enabling parents and grandparents to enjoy the presence of God in a relaxed worship setting.

J2A Youth Group on Pilgrimage
St. Philip's J2A (Journey to Adulthood) pilgrims will are on pilgrimage to Taize, France, and Canterbury, England. You are invited to keep them in your prayers while they are on pilgrimage through July 22.

commissioning of pilgrimsGracious God, I pray for pilgrims Stephen Argentati, David Christy, Matthew Fairbanks, Molly Hughes, Josh Prescott-Smith, Nicole Rochon, Sidney Ryan, Susannah Vickroy, and Zach Winston, and leaders Brian Fairbanks, Bruce Phillips, Linda Rosenfield, and Carrie Wright. Protect them as they travel, and return them safely to our church home. Jesus, our companion and guide, open their hearts and minds, their eyes and ears, so they will know you to be in the midst of them as they pray and sing, reflect, and share. Most Holy Spirit, inspire our pilgrims with deeper insight into the wonders and mysteries of faith, and empower them with new courage to live as Christ's disciples. Finally, hold the families of the pilgrims in your loving arms as they await the safe return of their loved ones.  Amen.

Called to be a Spiritual Director?

The Tacheria Interfaith Spirituality Center School for Spiritual Direction is now accepting applications for the next interfaith course in training of those called to a vocation of spiritual direction.  The course encompasses the beliefs of the world's major religions and is open to ordained and non-ordained men and women.  Spiritual leaders from many disciplines make up the faculty and share their insights, knowledge, wisdom and experience during the two years of the class. The course will begin in September, 2010, and will occur monthly on the second Saturday from 8:30 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. for two ten-month sessions.  There is also a weekend retreat each year. Enrollment is limited and we are accepting only ten applications for the coming year.  A genuine commitment to attending all of the sessions is important. Students in the classes of 2011 and 2012 will meet together for faculty presentations but there are also opportunities for the individual classes to meet separately. The course meets at St. Philip's.  Fees for the course are $500 per year not including the retreat cost. Some scholarship help is available. For further information and to receive an application, contact:  Linda Williams or Frank R. Williams, Ph.D., Directors, 297-6098 or tacheriacenter@aol.com.
