Greetings!
|
For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

On the Horizon |
Summer Choir On July 4, the Summer Choir will sing at both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services (rehearsal at 8:30 a.m.). For the rest of July, the "choir service" will be the 11:15 a.m. service. Anyone wishing to sing is welcome--simply show up at the rehearsal in the Music Center at 10:45 a.m. You may join us for one or several Sundays.
Reflections on an Interfaith Journey to Israel Eighteen Travelers from our congregation and Temple Emanu-El embarked on an extraordinary interfaith journey to Israel, June 2-14. Their journey featured memorable visits to Christian and Jewish sites throughout Israel and teachings by the Rev. John Kitagawa along the way. On Sunday, July 18, at 10:15 a.m. in the East Gallery, the group will share memories and reflections from this Interfaith Journey. Attend and learn why one of the sojourners remarked, "this trip has changed us all in some way."
Interfaith Community Services Interfaith Community Services is a network of 53 member faith communities, of which St. Philip's is one, providing services to disadvantaged people, disabled individuals, and seniors. These multiple services are often the "safety net" that help recipients remain or become stabilized, enabling them to lead independent lives.
ICS offers a series of classes providing support and education in end-of-life issues. Tani Bahti, RN, of Passages will present this series of 4 classes. The classes will be held on Tuesdays from 10 to 11:15 a.m. during July (starting July 6) at the ICS offices at 2820 W Ina Rd. Sessions are FREE. For more information, contact Karen MacDonald at 297-2738, x221. ICS has begun accepting donations of school supplies for children of lower-income families. Needed items include backpacks, notebooks, pens and pencils, crayons, rules, scissors, etc. Please bring supplies to the ICS office at 2820 West Ina Road, or contact Nancy Atherton (299-2439) for pickup (please do not bring items to St. Philip's). Friends of Music Summer Series St. Philip's Friends of Music once again presents their popular summer concert series beginning in July. The series kicks off with "Summer Serenade," an afternoon of art songs and arias performed by tenor Doug Spurlin with Jeffrey Campbell on piano, on Sunday, July 18, at 2 p.m. in the Church. The program will feature songs and arias in German, English, Spanish, and Italian, including selections from Aaron Copland's Old American Songs, some Mario Lanza favorites, Granada, an aria by Francesco Cilea, and some lovely songs by Italian composer Francesco Santoliquido. Admission is by donation.
Plan Now to Attend Summer Journey
Summer Journey, a popular and exciting program for young people in 4th through 8th grade, is offered July 26-30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Summer Journey continues the theme of the Summer Arts program in June: the concept of pieces fitting into a whole (below are shown the individual collages which were combined into an art piece that hangs in the Children's Chapel). Participants will apply the knowledge gained in making collage to creating mosaic pieces, exploring how each person fits into God's plans and how each can help do God's work in the world. Summer Journey includes a field trip. The cost is $85 for the week. Partial scholarships are available. Numbers are limited, so please register as soon as possible. For information and to register, call Rosalind Garcia at 299-6421, ext. 43. (The After-School Music and Homework Program would like to send our participants to Summer Journey and also to Choir Camp in August. If you can help fund a scholarship in full or in part, please contact Garmon Ashby, Rosalind Garcia, or Bruce Phillips at 299-6421. Thanks!)

Phixers "Phorums" Pheature Painting St. Philip's fourth Sunday home maintenance workshop series continues this summer, featuring a two-part series on painting during July and August. The St. Philip's "Phixers," a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church, sponsor this series of classes on general home maintenance topics. Professionals from the community teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so participants should dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. Participants may also want to bring a bag lunch. July 25 at 12:30 p.m. in the East Gallery: Perfect Preparation for Painting. Randy Wilsterman, area manager for Frazee Paint, will discuss proper preparation for painting. August 22, at 12:30 p.m. in the West Gallery: Perfect Painting. Jim Valentine of Frazee Paint will talk about the proper technique for painting walls and trim.

J2A Pilgrims Depart Wednesday
St. Philip's J2A (Journey to Adulthood) pilgrims will depart on Wednesday morning, July 7, on pilgrimage to Taize, France, and Canterbury, England (shown at right are the 2008 pilgrims and leaders setting off on their adventure). The 2010 pilgrims and leaders will be blessed at the 9 a.m. service on July 4. You are invited to pray for them while they are on pilgrimage through July 22.
Gracious God, I pray for pilgrims Stephen Argentati, David Christy, Matthew Fairbanks, Molly Hughes, Josh Prescott-Smith, Nicole Rochon, Sidney Ryan, Susannah Vickroy, and Zach Winston, and leaders Brian Fairbanks, Bruce Phillips, Linda Rosenfield, and Carrie Wright. Protect them as they travel, and return them safely to our church home. Jesus, our companion and guide, open their hearts and minds, their eyes and ears, so they will know you to be in the midst of them as they pray and sing, reflect, and share. Most Holy Spirit, inspire our pilgrims with deeper insight into the wonders and mysteries of faith, and empower them with new courage to live as Christ's disciples. Finally, hold the families of the pilgrims in your loving arms as they await the safe return of their loved ones. Amen.
Life Is a Deck of Cards
There is a reason, or so they say that you must play the cards a certain way. It may be just what we think is hard but it's the way life plays this deck of cards.
Sometimes we are handed a stacked deck of cards, ones we can't play with, but ones we must guard. The cards can be against us in so many ways but the odds of our living are the ones we must play.
We consider those odds and give it our all hoping the results are the best of the draw. We can only believe we will reign in the end to get up and play this game of life once again. --Bonnie Flint, 2010
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the many friends here at St. Philip's who supported me, thought of me, and prayed for me during my time of need. I thank God for all of you.
On Our Web Site St. Philip's recently received a letter of thanks from Primavera Foundation for a donation made by the Outreach Commission. Primavera provides programs and advocacy for the more than 20,000 men, women, and children who find themselves homeless in our community. This letter (along with several other letters of thanks) is posted on St. Philip's Web site on the Outreach page. There is also a link from "Latest News."
Green Tips, a brochure put together by St. Philip's Green Team, is available on St. Philip's Web site. Check out concrete things you can do as an individual to participate in saving our planet! For information about the Green Team, call Donna Cosulich, 529-2874, or Carroll Reitz, 229-1072.
GoodSearch -- Help Your Church
Recently, I discovered a website that donates money to charities, schools and non-profit organizations. GoodSearch.com takes half the money it receives from advertisers and gives it to organizations that have been registered with them. All you have to do is go to www.goodsearch.com. There will be a bar about halfway down the screen asking what group you GoodSearch for. Enter St. Philip's In The Hills and click "verify." You will then be given the opportunity to download the toolbar to your computer. This will allow you to enter your search term in a search bar just as you would on Google. There is a companion site called GoodShop.com. Here you may make online purchases at all the places you normally would (Expedia, Lands End, Crate and Barrel) and the store will make a donation to St. Philip's. This is not a gimmick and you will not be inundated with spam in your inbox. The church will get about $.01 per search. Our family has been using the GoodSearch toolbar since January and we have made about $22 for the church. It doesn't sound like much, but if more families will participate, the more money our church will receive.--Lisa Spurlin
