Greetings!
|
For the last six months liturgically we have been retracing the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. For the next six months we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

What's Going On |
Gallery Construction The Murphey Gallery is closed beginning this week for floor construction. The project is expected to take a couple of weeks. Some foundation cracks will be repaired and new flooring installed. We are grateful to the Preservation & Endowment Foundation for funding this much-needed repair and replacement.
Sunday Forum: Abel Emerging On Sunday, June 20, join the Rev. Ron Rude, Lutheran Chaplain at the University of Arizona, for a presentation on his book Abel Emerging: A Reconsideration of the Christian Story for a Sustainable World. This is a passionate, even lyrical, invitation for thoughtful people to re-frame the dominant narrative of the Christian story. Sober in its analysis, modest in its hopefulness, but bold in its vision, the book is a provocative, yet realistic, call to new thought and new action on behalf of a beleaguered creation. 10:15 a.m. in La Paz.

American Sign Language Interpretation Continues In June St. Philip's began offering American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at the 9 a.m. service. Our volunteer interpreter is Alicia Moylan, a student at the University of Arizona majoring in linguistics as well as studying for an ASL Interpreter Certificate at Pima Community College. Alicia signs from the west side of the church at the front. Read about this new program in the AZ Star.
Freedom from Hunger Food Drive
St. Philip's is again participating in the Interfaith Community Services Freedom from Hunger Food Drive to help the ICS food pantry stay stocked this summer. Please bring non-perishable food items to church every Sunday in June! The drive will finish with an ice cream social and concert sponsored by ICS at 3 p.m. on June 27 at Christ Presbyterian Church (6565 E. Broadway). Thank you for your generosity! If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Atherton at 299-2439. |

On the Horizon | Casa Maria Sandwich Making
St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church has had a long-standing commitment to the Casa Maria Free Kitchen, a facility located in the Santa Rita neighborhood of South Tucson. A team of volunteers gathers one Saturday every four weeks to make about 800 lunches, which consist of sandwiches, a piece of fruit, and a dessert. Our next sandwich making is on Saturday, June 26, beginning at 7:45 a.m. Because of Gallery construction, we'll be meeting in the Children's Chapel. Shown here are some of the 800 lunches enroute to Casa Maria.
Phixers "Phorum" St. Philip's fourth Sunday home maintenance workshop series continues this summer. The St. Philip's "Phixers," a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church, sponsor this series of classes on general home maintenance topics. Professionals from the community teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so participants should dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. Participants may also want to bring a bag lunch. June 27 at 12:30 p.m. in La Paz: Drip Irrigation--From Hose Bib to Plants. Mark Rios, manager of ACE Hardware at Campbell Plaza, promises that participants will get lots of tidbits on installing and maintaining a drip system. There will be some hands-on practice. Each participant will receive a special discount from ACE Hardware.

Independence
Day On Sunday, July 4, St. Philip's will celebrate Independence Day with patriotic music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Good ol' fashioned ice cream socials will be hosted by the Parish Life Ministry at 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., featuring a wide array of flavors of ice cream and toppings. Entertainment will be provided by the Tucson Flute Club. You are invited to wear red, white, and blue and join the festivities!

Food for Thought

"Comfy Space" Service Last week's Summer Arts program focused on the concept of pieces fitting into a whole. Participants created individual collage works and then combined them into a larger work. These activities helped participants to look at the parts of themselves that make them who they are, and how they themselves are a part of their family and their community. Following on this theme, the sermon activity at last Sunday's "Comfy Space" service explored how parts combine to make up a whole, by putting together this puzzle (painted by Stella Lopez). The focus of the service was our responsibility as Christian to take the broken pieces of the world and help return it to wholeness. "Comfy Space" worship is casual worship designed for those who tend to wiggle in church and those who worship with them. The next "Comfy Space" service will be on Sunday, August 1, at 9 a.m. in the Music Center. Better ministering to the worship needs of families was one of the "dreams" expressed during the dream-catching phase of the Mission Discernment process in 2008.
Border & Immigration Ministry St. Philip's Border & Immigration Ministry calls your attention to an upcoming educational event. Once You Were a Stranger: An Interfaith Educational Forum on SB1070, will be presented on Saturday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Park Avenue Christian Church. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Manuel de la Torre, Professor of Social Ethics at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, with workshops and discussions with local faith community leaders. Suggested donation of $5-$15 covers lunch. RSVPs are requested to Noel Anderson at noelsy79@gmail.com or John Smith at jwilbur283@comcast.net. For information about St. Philip's Border & Immigration Ministry or to subscribe to the e-letter, contact BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org.
Update on Payday Lending
Short-term (payday) lending at an interest rate higher than 36% APR becomes illegal on July 1. Our partner, the Southwest Center for Economic Integrity (SWCEI), tells us that they will need to recruit an army of volunteers to help them monitor how the payday lending industry is getting around the law (because they know the industry will try.) They will be working with the Attorney General's Office. Some companies are already migrating over to car title lending, but there is work that SWCEI can do there as well. In addition, it is more important than ever to focus on asset development, savings, and credit counseling as SWCEI moves forward. It is important to take a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished. The sunset of the payday lending statute in Arizona is a cause for social justice celebration. The result will be tens of thousands of workers and their families freed of a horrible cycle of debt. There is a great deal more work to be done, and SWCEI is counting on your help. There will be a modest luncheon reception on June 30 to mark the end of Arizona's 10-year experiment in usury. The reception will be held at the home of Penelope Jacks, Southern Arizona Director for Children's Action Alliance, 2303 E. Adams Street, 11 a.m.-12 noon. Contributions to SWCEI are welcome. SWECI's mailing address is P.O. Box 1865, Tucson, AZ 85702.--Rita Smalling

Out the Chapel! The Chapel of the Nativity has a new look! Fine Arts Committee member Christina Caldwell noted that the Kress Collection pieces housed at the University of Arizona are displayed on a blue background, which sets off the pieces beautifully. The Caldwells volunteered to paint the previously white west wall (right) with a color approved by the Buildings & Grounds Committee. An intrepid crew, including "saints" Harry Caldwell, Gary Ashworth, Christina Caldwell, and Les Hunter, braved the sweltering temperatures to apply the paint. As you can see below, the crucifix and paintings almost glow against the new paint color. We are fortunate to have custody of these Kress works, religious art pieces used in the setting for which they were intended, and we are grateful to the Caldwells, who saw a need, determined a solution, sought approval through the appropriate channels, and took responsibility for carrying out the plan.
