Forward to a Friend
Greetings!

On Ascension Day, Jesus sent his disciples forth to carry on his teachings. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's, seeking ways that you might orient your life as a disciple of Christ in the world.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Sunday, May 23

wind water and doveThe next "Comfy Space" service will celebrate Pentecost. You are invited to come to the Music Center at 9 a.m. to explore the power of wind and water in creation (wind can make a picture and water can make a Christian). The service will include baptisms. "Comfy Space" worship is casual worship designed for those who tend to wiggle in church and those who worship with them.

PCOA tableThe first Elder Care Is Not Just for Elders FAIR will take place from 9 a.m. until noon in the Murphey Gallery. This fair will bring a full range of resources and experts to address a variety of issues regarding elder care. This Fair is not intended for elders only, but also for those who care for or about them, and even for those who expect to be an elder someday. A wide variety of agencies and organizations that provide services to seniors will be at the Fair. Many senior independent and assisted living facilities will be represented. Several of these groups will offer raffles just for visiting their tables. Parishioner John Evans, Assistant Attorney General, State of Arizona, will show examples of eldercare fraud literature and answer questions. HealthSouth will display and demonstrate assistive walking devices and assistive devices for activities of daily living. Rural Metro will be on hand to take blood pressures, and Tucson Fire Department will answer questions. Two veterinarians from Sahuaro Vista Veterinary Clinic will provide advice and answer pet-related questions (please do not bring pets).

Red CrossThe Elder Care Fair will be held in conjunction with a Red Cross blood drive. To schedule your appointment to help save lives, call Cathleen Carlton at 331-3656.

Learn about rainwater harvesting!
backyard culvertIn the current economy, many people are looking for ways to save money whenever they can.  St. Philip's Phixers, a group of parish volunteers who meet weekly to do maintenance and repair work around the church (saving the church about $35,000 in recent years,) sponsors a monthly series of "phorums" on general home maintenance topics at 12:30 p.m. on fourth Sundays.  Classes last about 1-2 hours. Professionals from the community will teach different topics each month. Some may be hands-on, so dress comfortably or bring a change of clothes. You may also want to bring a bag lunch. On May 23 in the Children's Chapel, Scott Calhoun of Zona Gardens will talk about passive and active rainwater harvesting. You've probably seen some of his rainwater cisterns made from highway culverts. This informative presentation is not to be missed!

gluten freeSt. Philip's will begin making gluten-free communion wafers available on Sunday, May 23. If you have a food sensitivity that requires a gluten-free host, simply mention that to the clergy person administering communion. They will signal for the receptacle containing gluten-free hosts to be brought to you, and you may help yourself to a host (to avoid cross-contamination). You may either intinct or drink from the common chalice. In this way we hope to extend our welcome at communion

New Evening Family Caregivers Group Added
A new Family Caregivers Group will meet on the last Thursday of each month, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Mesquite. A daytime group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in Salvia. These support groups are a collaboration between Pima Health Systems and St. Philip's. There is no cost to attend the drop-in groups. They are open to any family caregiver who needs a safe place to share highs and lows, struggles and successes, as well as to learn about resources, ask questions, and develop coping skills. Brigid Waszczak, Spiritual Director, and Mara Levin, MSW, of PHS are co-facilitators. For more information call Brigid at 891-3299 or e-mail to brigid@spiritmail.zzn.com. Participants may attend one, many, or all sessions!

Summer Choir
In June, St. Philip's hard-working adult choirs take a well-deserved rest as we move into summer choir mode. For June the summer "all-comers" choir will sing at the 9 a.m. service. On July 4, there will be choirs at both services, and for the remainder of July the Summer Choir will sing at the 11:15 a.m. service. The "choir service" for the month of August and September 6 will be the 9 a.m. service. Anyone wishing to sing is welcome--simply show up at the rehearsal in the Music Center 30 minutes before the service.

welcomeSt. Philip's Summer Arts
The popular and exciting program Summer Arts will be held June 7-11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Activities are designed for two age groups: kindergarten through grade 3 and grades 4 through 8. This year's theme is the concept of pieces fitting into a whole. Participants will be creating individual collage works, and then the works will be combined into a larger work that will be displayed at St. Philip's. The children will make percussive instruments and explore the components that build a piece of music. They will then have the opportunity to create a simple musical composition. Ultimately, these activities will help participants to look at the parts of themselves that make them who they are, and how they themselves are a part of their family and their community. The cost is $85 for the week. Partial scholarships are available. Numbers are limited, so please register as soon as possible. For information and to register, call Rosalind Garcia at 299-6421, ext. 43.

Sponsorships are sought to enable After-School Music and Homework Program participants to attend Summer Arts. If you can provide help in full or part, contact Rosalind.

Education for Ministry

EfM logoOn Sunday, May 23, at the 11:15 a.m. service we will honor this year's graduates of the Education for Ministry (EfM) program: Alan McKeeman and Bill Krauss. Sponsored by the University of the South, EfM is a four-year program recommended for anyone who is seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian faith through directed Bible study, theological reflection, and stimulating discussion. During the first year, readings center on the Old Testament and historical commentary on how the books came to be written and chosen for inclusion in the Bible. The second year is devoted to reading the New Testament and a discussion of the lives of Jesus and Paul. Christian history from the first until the eighteenth century constitutes the third year, examining the theological discussions and schisms in the church. The fourth year is devoted to discussing the ideas of modern philosophers and theologians. Two other equally important components of the course are designed to bring the group members into closeness with each other and to help them grapple together with theological questions. For the first several weeks of each year, members take turns reading their autobiographies to the group. The format of the autobiographies changes each year, causing participants to examine life from a different perspective each time. The other component, "theological reflection," can take different forms but it is basically a group exercise that involves sharing anecdotes from daily life. Discussion centers on the theological, social, and cultural implications of the anecdotes.

EfM is an exploration of the Bible, of church history, of personal lives, of what one's faith can mean. A lot is expected of the participants: weekly meetings and readings for 9 months each year, $350 a year for materials (some scholarships are available), an open mind to deal with religious issues, and an open heart toward fellow members. The outcome is a stronger faith; the outline of a theological education; and a changed perspective on the church, other people, and life. St. Philip's offers a weekday evening and a weekday morning class. Classes begin in September; enrollment deadline is August 1. For more information, contact Jane Chilcott (evening class) at 297-3089 or e-mail to mjchilcott@comcast.net or Agnes Griffen (daytime class) at 743-9143. More information about EfM is available on the EfM Web site.

A Hill of Beans
At the Earth Day "comfy space" service on Sunday, April 25, the sermon activity included planting pole beans as a way of giving back to the earth. Here's the progress at the end of 1 and 2 weeks! The pot is located by the cross in the Perry Garden.
