If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

The 9 a.m. service will include confirmation, reaffirmation, and reception. At 10:15 a.m. there will be a special forum in the Murphey Gallery, entitled What Is the Church? Bishop Smith will offer his perspective on general theology and ecclesiology, focusing his reflections on the advertisement placed six months ago by the Episcopal Church in USA Today, aimed at defining who we are as the Episcopal Church in a positive light. You are encouraged to attend. (Below, Bishop Smith with the 2009 confirmands)

Food for Thought
| God Across Borders A contingent of St. Philippians participated in a "border advance" on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24. On Saturday they traveled to the border to join an interfaith "God Has No Borders" event. Below a participant shares his reflections. After a two-and-a-quarter-hour drive to Naco, Arizona, we gathered with the Rev. Seth Polley, Episcopal Border Ministries, for some words of planning, inspiration, and direction. During the next hour other people and groups arrived, work was completed on the banner of the day, balloons inflated, and song sheets distributed. The Bishop of Arizona and others arrived.
We walked the dusty streets of Naco from the small church (St. Michael's) to the Border crossing, stopping just on the U.S. side to sing a bit and gather our stragglers. We crossed without guards, dogs, suspicion, or hostility into Mexico.
About 100 yards from the Mexican gate were gathered about 200 to welcome us. There was a huge Mexican flag, a band on a flatbed trailer, girls in costume dresses, boys in white shirts and jeans, the mayor of Naco, Mexico, and many other participants and bystanders. We were welcomed by the mayor -- and by everyone there -- made to feel truly welcomed.

There was then a "parade" of all the above up the hill for maybe a half dozen blocks, a u-turn, and then down the hill back close to our starting point, to a plaza in the center of town, with a large stage and chairs for the guests. We were again welcomed by the mayor, heard from the mayor of Bisbee (also there), and the Bishop of Arizona. He apologized for the State of Arizona's recent legislation and hoped for more wisdom shown from Arizona's judges than was in evidence from its politicians.--Don Veitch.
You are invited to join the new Border and Immigration Ministry as we form our mission statement, define core values, and develop a scope and focus. First Thursdays of each month. Contact Suzanne Hesh, 325-4469, textilz@theriver.com.
