What's Going On |
Sunday, March 21 Solemn Communion: At the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, March 21, St. Philip's will celebrate our first Solemn Communion. This marks the culmination of a Lenten journey into a deeper understanding of Christ and his gift of the Eucharist with the Solemn Communion class of 2010. Through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, the Solemn Communicants have meditated on scripture, made Anglican rosaries, baked the bread they will use for their Communion, and decorated candles.
Lenten Labyrinth Walk: The Lenten series of Sunday meditative labyrinth walks culminates on March 21 at 1 p.m. at St. Philip's. We will construct a labyrinth in the East Gallery from donated cans of food. After we walk and pray the labyrinth, the food will go to St. Philip's Food Pantry to feed those in need. For more information, please contact Eric Rau or call 440-7287, or Brigid Waszczak or call 577-7792.

Young Couples Picnic: You are invited to join St. Philip's Young Couples' group in the Plaza for fun and fellowship. Bring a picnic and a blanket, and enjoy a lovely afternoon. Children are most welcome. For information: Holly Crawford, 529-1179.
March/April Loaves & Fishes You read it here first ... the March/April issue of Loaves & Fishes will be mailed on Tuesday, but it is available today on St. Philip's Web site.
Palm SundayPalm Sunday Procession: In a joyous celebration of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, St. Philip's parishioners will gather at the central fountain at St. Philip's Plaza (across the street from St. Philip's Church) at 8:30 a.m. on Palm Sunday, March 28. After the Blessing of the Palms, we will recreate the excitement of that first Palm Sunday procession, with singing of hymns and hosannas and with palms waving, as we cross River Road to the Church.Palm Sunday special music is at 2:30 p.m. Entitled Lux Aeterna: A Musical Meditation for Holy Week, it features choral favorites for Holy Week by contemporary North American composers, including Lauridsen, Ferko, Sirret, Ticheli, Clausen, and St. Philippian Sheldon Curry. Presented by the Canterbury Choir.

Lenten Weekday Services, Classes, and Recitals
The weekday Lenten classes, services, and recitals conclude this coming week. A complete listing is available on St. Philip's Web site on the "Latest News" page.
There is a Wednesday morning Holy Eucharist Rite I at 7:30 a.m., followed by a class facilitated by the Rev. Allen Breckenridge entitled "Lenten Dialogues: To Give Up or Take On." At 4 p.m., Harry Caldwell, Ph.D., offers the class "The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully." At 6 the J2A youth group hosts a Lenten supper, which is followed by two classes: "Coloring Outside the Lines: Drawing a Prayerlife" facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Clare Yarborough, and "Take! Eat! Exploring the Eucharist," facilitated by the St. Philip's Young Professionals group and featuring each week a different guest perspective on the meaning of the Eucharist. The evening concludes with Eucharist at 8:15 p.m. Another opportunity for reflection and prayer is offered on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. in the Church. Pray the Stations of the Cross through the compelling work of artist Kurt Anderson and the Stations of the Cross for Global Justice and Reconciliation, prepared by the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations. The meditation booklet is available on St. Philip's Web site.
This year's Lenten Recital series concludes on Thursday, March 25. Former St. Philippian Maureen Papovich, soprano, returns to join pianist Bonnie Bird in presenting tuneful delights from four centuries. Admission to these 30-minute recitals is by donation. For more information about Friends of Music, see St. Philip's Web site or contact friendsofmusic@stphilipstucson.org.
Holy Week Services and Events Holy Week offers a time to journey metaphorically from darkness to light through worship at St. Philip's. There is at least one service each day of Holy Week. A complete schedule is available on St. Philip's Web site on the "Latest News" page.
The Ancient Office of Tenebrae, on Wednesday evening, March 31, at 7 p.m., is a moving descent into the darkest days of the church year. The liturgy is a merger of the traditional Matins and Lauds and is characterized by the progressive extinguishing of all lights in the church except one candle.
The Triduum, or "three sacred days," begins on Maundy Thursday through Holy Saturday. The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday, April 1, begins with a supper at 6:15 p.m., followed by a liturgy at 7 p.m. in the Church. The liturgy includes the traditional footwashing, Eucharist, and Stripping of the Altar, which symbolizes the laying of Jesus in the tomb. The all-night reading of Dante's Inferno returns for its second year by popular acclaim. The reading will begin at 9 p.m. in the Church and continue until 10 a.m. on Friday, April 2. Each half-hour segment will include reading of selected cantos from Dante's Inferno, silent meditation, and atmospheric music. St. Philippians and honored guests from the community will serve as readers. Participants may arrive and leave throughout the night. A flier is available on St. Philip's Web site. You are encouraged to invite friends in the community to partake of this meditative opportunity.
A preview of the Dante reading will be offered next Sunday, March 28, at 10:15 a.m. in the West Gallery. Dr. Fabian Alfie, Professor of Italian at UA, will provide the basics about Dante's Inferno, as well as information about Dante's life and times.
The Good Friday service on April 2, from noon to 3 p.m., is in three 1-hour blocks to accommodate those who wish to participate for an hour or for the entire service. It includes prayers, veneration of the cross, communion during the third hour, and meditative flute music.
The Children's Way of the Cross at 4:30 p.m. will be an interactive experience for all ages, filled with the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of Jesus' last journey, led by the Chalice Players. Meet at the Church for this multisensory event. The Great Vigil of Easter is held on Easter Even, April 3, at 7 p.m. This year the service will begin with the Service of Light (lighting and blessing the New Fire and Paschal Candle and candlelit procession, with allergen-free incense), followed by the Vigil recounting the history of our salvation (through readings, and chanting with soprano saxophone and synthesizer), Holy Baptism and sprinkling of holy water, and the first proclamation of Easter with fanfare and noisemakers, culminating in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The service will be followed by a potluck reception: participants are invited to bring their favorite sparkling beverage and chocolate, in addition to noisemakers for the Easter Proclamation. Easter services at St. Philip's begin at 6 a.m. and continue through the day and into the evening. A complete schedule is available on St. Philip's Web site.

Outdoor Art Show 2010

Mozart's Gran Partita Serenade will be the musical glue. $15 donation suggested. Tickets for a pre-concert reception catered by Elle Restaurant are also available for purchase for $35. After-School Program Hosts Gifted Pianist After-School Program participants listened raptly last Wednesday to a recital performed by Cameron Williams, an outstanding pianist their own age. Cameron is in the 5th grade at Tucson Waldorf School and has been studying piano for two and a half years. Beginning as a student of Kay Couch, a parishioner and After-School Program volunteer, he now studies with Dr. Kim Hayashi. After deftly performing several advanced-level Mozart and Schumann selections, he treated the audience to one of his own compositions, which was rhythmically, harmonically, and melodically sophisticated. He participates in the Tucson Symphony's Young Composers Project and may someday have one of his compositions performed by the Symphony. In addition, he plays jazz in a combo through the Tucson Jazz Society's Jazz Institute. Cameron was poised and serious while performing, and engaging and self-possessed during the question-and-answer session afterwards. At first the questions were fairly routine, such as "how long have you been playing" and "how much do you practice" (an hour and a half to hours a day) (every day?) (six to seven days a week), and then a prescient After-School participant asked him "do you enjoy playing the piano or do you love it." He paused thoughtfully and said "I think those are two different questions, and the answer to both of them is 'yes.' I enjoy playing the piano and I also love it." Exposure to a young musician of Cameron's caliber is the type of opportunity that the After-School Program is able to offer, through your support.
There are many ways to help the After-School Program, through donations of various types and through volunteering. To find out more, e-mail Laura Rubbo or call 299-6561. Growing Border and Immigration Ministry at St. Philip's Across the country, congregations and parishes of all denominations are responding in faith to the urgent need for ministry presence on the US-Mexico border and for comprehensive immigration reform. United States immigration laws and their enforcement are inconsistent, ineffective and inhumane. This painful reality has resulted in deadly consequences and impacts people on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Our faith heritage calls us to welcome the stranger among us and to honor, respect and care for the alien in our land. Christians who live and worship in the Southwest have a unique challenge and an unprecedented opportunity to witness, educate and advocate for local, regional and national immigration reform. Together, let's walk with Christ along a border that can one day be a place of hope and opportunity for all. On Thursday, April 8, 7 - 8:30 pm, La Paz Room, we will hold the inaugural meeting of St. Philips Border and Immigration Ministry Core Team. Bring your concerns, commitment and ideas. E-mail Suzanne Hesh or call 325-4469; or Bill Kruse or call 520 548-7426. Greening Our FaithAs part of the Parish's "greening our faith," work is going on to change the lights on campus to more energy-efficient bulbs. The passageways have condensed florescent lights now. In order to continue to "go green and save 'green'," your Green Team is looking for electricians to do some pro bono work to modernize our overhead florescent lights. A parishioner is providing the new type of lights but needs an electrician for the installation. If you can help, e-mail Pat Dunford or call 327-3891.
