Greetings!

Much is happening at St. Philip's as we wind down the Season after Epiphany and prepare to enter Lent. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities and follow where God is next calling you.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, whether they're a parishioner or someone interested in St. Philip's, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! Ministry Development Workshop
On Saturday, February 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the East Gallery, the team of expert volunteer facilitators from Survival School Church Leadership Training will help you acquire skills that you need to develop and lead your ministry or parish project as we strive to do God's work in the world. This workshop is for anyone who is active in one of our many church ministries or who wishes to assume a more active leadership role. If you missed the workshop in October, this is a perfect opportunity for you. If you attended in October, you will find new "nuggets" in this second presentation. $20 retreat fee includes materials and lunch. Scholarship assistance is available. Please contact Greg Foraker or call 299-6421 to register.

rummage sale

J2A Rummage Sale

The J2A (Journey to Adulthood) Youth Group's rummage sale offers cool stuff and bargains galore! Saturday, February 6, beginning at 7 a.m. in the Children's Center Courtyard. Proceeds help support J2A Pilgrimage 2010. (Donated items may be dropped off in Room 6 up to Friday)

Gioacchino RossiniFirst Sunday Music
Don't forget to arrive early for the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, February 7! First Sunday Music will be Gioachino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. Written for the unusual ensemble of two pianos, harmonium, four soloists, and choir, this large-scale mass is one of Rossini's last and finest works. Because of the length of the music, it will begin 6 minutes before the scheduled service time.

Also, don't forget to bring your offerings of canned food for the usual First Sunday Food for Hunger drive.

The Next 75 Years at St. Philip's
If you would like to hear about how you can do something NOW to guide the future of St. Philip's, we invite you to join your fellow St. Philippians on Sunday, February 7, at 10:15 a.m. in the West Gallery. Forums during the past 3 weeks have given us information on planning our legacies, including our personal values, our estate planning, and how to maximize the benefits of our estates for our children, other beneficiaries, and charities. This week we will summarize these presentations and look into the FUTURE. Members of different ministries will provide information on how endowments are managed, are used now, and will be used in the future to fulfill St. Philip's mission to be "a strong and loving community that welcomes, encourages, and empowers all to grow in Christ and to do God's work in the World."

alleluiasFamily-Oriented Worship in "Comfy-Space"
There will be a Family Worship Service in "Comfy-Space" on February 14 at 9 a.m., parallel to the 9 a.m. service in the Church. Join us in the Music Center to celebrate the end of the Season after the Epiphany by getting shiny faces with Jesus (in commemoration of the Transfiguration) and help pack up and put away the Alleluias for Lent. This service is designed for people of all ages, particularly those who like to wiggle in church and those who worship with them.

Recovery Sunday at St. Philip's
recovery ministriesOn February 14, St. Philip's will observe "Recovery Sunday," a time in which the Church prays for those who are affected by issues of substance abuse and celebrates those who are successfully living lives of recovery. There will be a special preacher at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services and a special forum for parents and teens to talk about alcohol and drug abuse.

The adult forum will be presented by Charles Gillispie, M.F.A., L.I.S.A.C., who is currently in practice as an addiction counselor who specializes in addiction in youth and young adults. Charles will address the topic of substance abuse as it relates to adolescents and young adults. He hopes to provide some practical information in regard to recognizing the signs of substance abuse as well as information about preventing substance abuse. The perspective of his talk will be informed by his role as a substance abuse counselor and will be directed toward parents. Charles will be well prepared to answer all your questions. Parents of younger children are welcome and, in fact, are urged to attend

The youth forum will be facilitated by teens, who are in recovery for addiction. This year three of our youth leaders, Mariel Watt, Brian Fairbanks, and Sasha Velgos, will be in the forum with their groups to help lead small age-appropriate breakout sessions. Each breakout session leader will be trained to facilitate discussions about substance abuse and addiction by Kim Brown, a Rite 13 leader and a counselor who specializes in working with addicted teens. As with last year's forum, the youth are promised complete confidentiality.

Community 12-Step Eucharist Planned

On February 21 at 3 p.m., St. Philip's will host a 12-Step Eucharist for the Tucson community. A 12-Step Eucharist is both a celebration and a prayer for recovery. It is a prayer of gratitude from  those who are working through the 12-Step program who are already on the path to recovery and a prayer for those still suffering from addictions. The service follows the form of a traditional Eucharist, with each of the twelve steps incorporated throughout the service. The well-known serenity prayer is also included. Everyone is cordially invited to attend--those who are involved in 12-Step programs, those who support loved ones engaged in such programs, those whose lives have been affected by addiction, and those who are interested in learning more. If you are currently working through the 12-Step Program and would like to participate in the Community 12-Step Eucharist, contact Dan Behling at danbehlingphd@aol.com.

Food for Thought

St. Philip's Annual Meeting
dreams into actionSt. Philip's Annual Meeting was held on two Sundays, January 17 and January 24. The January 17 session was an exciting and inspiring update on projects and emphases arising from the Mission Discernment process. In the spring of 2008, parishioners (about 400 total) gathered in dream-catching sessions to discern what God is calling St. Philip's to do and be, coming up with more than 900 dreams. These were distilled into five areas of emphasis: communications, mission support, outreach, ministry to families, and facilities needs arising from new and expanding ministries. Those attending the Part I session went away energized and amazed by what has been accomplished and excited about what lies in St. Philip's future.

Part II, on January 24, began with the election of new Vestry members, followed by reports from the 75th Anniversary Committee, the Buildings & Grounds Committee, the Preservation & Endowment Foundation, and the Parish Treasurer. Budget information was sobering, and poses challenges for St. Philip's to continue mission and ministry in doing God's work in the world. In his sermon on January 24, the Rector spoke of identifying that which is essential, that which is important, and that which is good to do if possible.

St. Philippians should seek to be informed both about the accomplishments we celebrate and about the challenges that St. Philip's faces. If you did not attend the Annual Meeting, or if you would like to refresh your memory or find more information, you are encouraged to go to St. Philip's Web site.
