Letter from the Rector
|

26 January 2010
Dear St. Philippians,
Budget Committee Chair, Bob Breckenridge, presented the 2010 Budget to Annual Meeting, Part II. Income is significantly down, and the Vestry believes we can no longer responsibly draw large sums from the Budget Reserve Fund. That fund is rapidly dwindling. Secondly, the parish must break its dependency on this Fund. Either Bob (721-6161) or Treasurer Jim Prescott-Smith (577-3779) can respond to questions in detail. In order to have a balanced budget in short order, the Vestry has reduced the staffing budget by about $150,000.
Staff reductions are on the order of 6 full time (Program and Office) staff furloughed for at least three weeks; plus, 3 full time Program Staff being reduced to half time; plus 2 full time Office Staff reduced to three-quarter time; plus reduction in Child Care Staff; plus eliminating Sexton overtime; plus reduction in budget to pay Staff Singers. No final decisions have been made.
Jim and Bob's financial presentation was clearly accepted. There were comments about "doing something" to ameliorate the situation. There were many good questions and responses too. One spoke of the importance of including St. Philip's in our wills and legacy plans. At least two suggested that parishioners increase our pledges immediately. At the end of my 01.24.10 sermon, I noted our need to discern that which is essential, that which is important, and that which is good to do if we can. I noted 5 opportunities for responses to help maintain momentum and effectiveness of our ministries. This sermon is on the Web site and in parish tract racks.
We have work to do! Join me in my resolve to do everything possible to continue doing God's work in and through St. Philip's.
Faithfully yours,
The Reverend John E. Kitagawa, Rector
P.S. To communicate an increased pledge, please contact Steve Brong, Parish Administrator, in writing or by e-mail (steve.brong@stphilipstucson.org). Thank you.
