What's Going On
|

St. Philip's Annual Meeting Next Sunday, January 17, is Part I of St. Philip's 2009 Annual Meeting. This session, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, will provide an exciting update on the "dreams" that came out of the Mission Discernment process--some that have already been realized and ongoing progress on others. There will also be time for questions and comments.
On Sunday, January 24, the Annual Meeting Part II, at 10:15 a.m., will include 75th Anniversary Committee, Treasurer's, Buildings & Grounds, and Preservation & Endowment Foundation reports, with opportunities for questions and comments. Elections of five Vestry members for 3-year terms (nominees: Sue Cross, James Humphreys, Bill Kruse, Alison Lee, and Cassandra Ridlinghafer) and one for a 2-year term (nominee: Richard Powell), the Junior Warden for a 1-year term (nominee: Beth Brouillette), and five lay delegates to the Annual Diocesan Convention (nominees: Bob Brouillette, Aviry Christy, Tom Cross, John Driskill, and Debbie Walker) will take place at Part II of the Annual Meeting.
The official Annual Meeting Notice is posted on St. Philip's Web site (on the "latest news" page), along with bios of the Vestry candidates.
You are encouraged to attend, to participate in celebrating what has
been going on at St. Philip's, to look ahead to plans for 2010 and
beyond, and to let your voice be heard.

Reminder: Final Session
"Times of Our Lives" The series "Times of Our Lives," presented jointly by St. Philip's and Temple Emanu-El, concludes on Wednesday, January 13. Rites of death and mourning from the Jewish and Christian perspectives will be presented by Rabbi Sam Cohon and the Rev. John Kitagawa. At 7 p.m. in the Board Room at Temple Emanu-El. For more information, e-mail Greg Foraker or call 299-6421, ext. 67.
Positive Change Is Coming!
The Outreach Commission is launching a new long-term project to provide
some small help in these tough economic times to nonprofit
organizations in Tucson with whom St. Philips is affiliated. Starting
on January 17, we are asking parishioners of all ages, from children in
Church School to long-term St. Philippians, to bring every Sunday any
spare change that might be hanging around your house -- in pockets,
under sofa cushions, in penny jars, ANYWHERE -- and drop it in the jars
we will be placing at the entrances to the Church, in Church School
classrooms, and at coffee hour. Each month, Outreach will designate a
nonprofit in Tucson with whom we are already affiliated, including
Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Community Services, TIHAN, and
Primavera, to receive the total collected for the month. Each of us, in
a small way, can contribute to helping one of our neighbors in a big
way ... maybe by helping pay someone's utility bill for the month, or
buying a bus card so someone can get to work, or paying for the nails
that help build someone's house. So please, save your coins (dollar
bills work too!) and let's see how, collectively, our POSITIVE CHANGE
can make a difference in people's lives. As always, thank you for your
generosity!

Food for Thought

Mission Discernment: Dreams In Action If you were active at St. Philip's in spring of 2008, you no
doubt attended at least one dream-catching session. Dream-catching sessions
were the initial phase in the Mission Discernment Process, which was initiated
to enable the Parish at large to discern what God is calling St. Philip's to do
and be. Each session began with prayer and reflection on the answers to two
questions: "what is God calling us to do" and "what do we need to fulfill God's
call." Dreams were written on sticky notes and attached to butcher paper sheets
grouped by ministry areas. About 400 parishioners dreamed more than 900 dreams,
ranging from simple ideas to conceptual programmatic concepts to ambitious
challenges. The master list of these dreams is accessible on the Mission Discernment page of St. Philip's Web site.

It is illuminating, not quite 2 years later, to look at that
list of dreams! It included some ideas we take for granted today, such as more
support for "green" initiatives. Through the tireless work of the Green Team,
progress has been made in providing education and promoting change at St.
Philip's, such as having compact fluorescent bulbs installed. St. Philip's
Green Team was even featured at the Diocesan Convention in October of 2009.
Another dream that appeared multiple times on the list was improved electronic
communications. At that time, the social networking site Facebook wasn't
generally recognized for its potential, but now more than 200 St. Philippians
have Facebook profiles and can stay in touch through posting photos and
comments about St. Philip's activities. At the General Convention last June,
our Rector posted nightly commentaries about the activities of the day, which
helped keep parishioners connected with what was going on in the national
church and engendered "buzz" about the issues. Even this all-Parish e-letter
that you are currently reading did not exist in 2008! More visibility for St.
Philip's LGBT "Phamily" in the Tucson community was on the list. "Phamily"
members, along with "Phriends" from the parish, took a first step (literally)
by participating in the Pride parade in October. Parishioners dreamed of
improved accessibility for those who are wheelchair bound; now automatic door openers have been enstalled, enabling restroom access. The St. Philip's Food Pantry,
which has existed for years, now has a highly organized team of volunteers who
work together to ensure that it is stocked and that bags are ready to be given
out, all because parishioners dreamed and then put those dreams into action by
investing time and energy.
Some dreams have been incorporated into the
Parish goals and are in various stages of development. Many dreams included
ideas for new or expanded ministries, such as reaching out to neighborhood children after school, providing
services for the elderly and those who care for them, or experimenting with
alternative forms of worship. Much has been accomplished in these areas, the most visible being St. Philip's After-School Music and Homework Program, which is in its second year. You will hear about many of these "dreams into
action" at the Annual Meeting Part I, on Sunday, January 17, at 10:15 a.m.
Don't miss this exciting glimpse into the future of St. Philip's!
