What's Going On

Sunday, January 3
First Sunday Music: Pete Fine, sitar First Sunday Music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on January 3 is classical music from India, presented by Tucson musician Pete Fine, virtuoso guitarist and sitarist. To read more about Pete, see the Sunday bulletin, posted on St. Philip's Web site.
Eucharists Honoring Educators Many of us fondly recall a special teacher who had a profound influence on our lives. Teachers are highly dedicated and motivated, and often their only reward consists in the satisfaction of having touched the lives of their students. At the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on January 3, we honor the gifts of educators through the ages, in our community, and in our lives. Educators will serve as preachers, celebrants, deacons, and readers. You are invited to attend, to invite teachers and colleagues, and to wear your academic hood! For more information, see the Sunday bulletin, on the "latest news" page of St. Philip's Web site.

Food Drive As is customary on first Sundays, Food for Hunger offerings of canned food will be collected at a table in the Fishpond Garden. Food is shared between St. Philip's food pantry and the community food bank at Interfaith Community Services. Thank you for your generosity.
Feast of the Epiphany January 6 St. Philip's will celebrate The Feast of the Epiphany with a service on Wednesday, January 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Church. This candlelit service will include lessons, prayers, hymns led by members of St. Philip's choirs, and Eucharist.

Special Forum Series in January: What Is Your Legacy? Come to this series of forums and learn about how you can provide for your future, for your family, and leave your legacy at St. Philip's. The series will be presented in four parts. Your legacy awaits. Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m. in the West Gallery. January 3: Giving: Connecting Your Values, Resources, and Goals This forum will introduce the subject of planned giving and distinguish it from annual giving. We will begin with a visioning process to tie purposes, motivations, and benefits to behaviors. January 10: Values Based Planning This forum will address the questions surrounding why planning is important. January 31: Exercises in Planning This forum will address the questions how to plan, bringing in estate planning experts to lead the forum. February 7: Your Legacy to St. Philip's This forum will bring the lessons learned about the planned giving process together with the needs of the parish, identifying where specific opportunities exist for parishioners to create their legacy.
More information about legacy giving is contained in the December issue of Loaves & Fishes.
For more information about many diverse offerings for your spiritual, theological, and mission formation, pick up a blue Adult Formation booklet (entitled "Grow with God"), or see the Adult Formation page on St. Philip's Web site.
Meet the Candidates for Vestry There will be two opportunities to be come acquainted with candidates for St. Philip's Vestry. At 10:15 a.m. on January 3 and January 11, come to La Paz to meet and ask questions of Sue Cross, James Humphreys, Bill Kruse, Alison Lee, Cassandra Ridlinghafer, and Richard Powell, as well as the candidate for Junior Warden, Beth Brouillette. Elections will take place at Part II of St. Philip's Annual Meeting, on Sunday, January 24. Bios were mailed in the December issue of Fragments and are available on St. Philip's Web site.
Positive Change Is Coming!
The Outreach Commission is launching a new long-term project to provide
some small help in these tough economic times to nonprofit
organizations in Tucson with whom St. Philips is affiliated. Starting
on January 17, we are asking parishioners of all ages, from children in
Church School to long-term St. Philippians, to bring every Sunday any
spare change that might be hanging around your house -- in pockets,
under sofa cushions, in penny jars, ANYWHERE -- and drop it in the jars
we will be placing at the entrances to the Church, in Church School
classrooms, and at coffee hour. Every month, Outreach will designate a
nonprofit in Tucson with whom we are already affiliated, including
Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Community Services, TIHAN, and
Primavera, to receive the total collected for the month. Each of us, in
a small way, can contribute to helping one of our neighbors in a big
way ... maybe by helping pay someone's utility bill for the month, or
buying a bus card so someone can get to work, or paying for the nails
that help build someone's house. So please, save your coins (dollar
bills work too!) and let's see how, collectively, our POSITIVE CHANGE
can make a difference in people's lives. As always, thank you for your
generosity! |

Food for Thought

Annual Meeting NoticeThe 2010 Annual Meeting of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish will be held on two Sundays in January, 17 and 24 January 2010. On both Sundays we will observe the usual service schedule, with the Rector's Report given as the sermon. On January 17, the Annual Meeting Part I, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, will focus on the "dreams" that came out of the Mission Discernment process -- some that have already been realized and ongoing progress on others -- with opportunities for Q&A. On January 24, the Annual Meeting Part II, at 10:15 a.m., will include 75th Anniversary Committee, Treasurer's, Buildings & Grounds, and Preservation & Endowment Foundation reports, with opportunities for Q&A. Elections of five Vestry members for 3-year terms and one for a 2-year term, the Junior Warden for a 1-year term, and five lay delegates to the Annual Diocesan Convention will take place at Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 24) only. The Vestry Nominating Committee has selected a slate of candidates. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at Part I of the Annual Meeting (January 17). In order to be nominated, the nominee must be a member, pledging in 2010; must have previously agreed to serve, if elected; and must bring 150 copies of a one-sheet biography with picture. There will be no nominations from the floor during Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 24). The following are the slate of candidates for Vestry: Sue Cross, James Humphreys, Bill Kruse, Alison Lee, and Cassandra Ridlinghafer for three-year terms and Richard Powell for a two-year term. Bios of these candidates were mailed this week in Fragments and are available on St. Philip's Web site under " latest news." Delegates to Diocesan Convention include Bob Brouillette, John Driskill, Debbie Walker, Tom Cross, and Aviry Christy. There will be two opportunities to meet and speak to these candidates at Sunday morning forums on January 3 and 10. In spring of 2008, as we began the process of discerning what God is calling St. Philip's to be and do, more than 900 "dreams" were expressed by more than 400 parishioners. Many of these dreams have been realized. Many more have been incorporated in the parish's ongoing goals, and progress is continuing. The Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 17, will provide an exciting update on your dreams in action. More information about Mission Discernment is available on St. Philip's Web site. Our Wish for the New Year
