Palo Verde. The cost for the seasonal flu vaccine is $25 and for the
pneumonia vaccine is $45. Some insurance plans cover the cost. Note
that this is the vaccine against the seasonal influenza virus, not the
H1N1 "swine flu" virus. That vaccine is not yet generally available. Also, November 1 is your last opportunity to order Christmas greenery from the J2A youth, for pickup on December 6 or to be sent to family or friends elsewhere. Find the J2A table in the Perry Garden during coffee hour. Information about these and many other activities is found in the Sunday bulletin on St. Philip's Latest News page. November 2: All Souls' Day All Souls' Day is the traditional time to remember loved ones enjoying eternal
life in the nearer presence of God. At St. Philip's, our Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving
with Sung Eucharist Rite II will be at 7 p.m. on November 2 in the
Church. This celebration of life that is transformed beyond death
includes music, prayers, and communion. Families are invited to
remember their loved ones by lighting one of the candles outside the
church door and placing it on the altar prior to the service. The
service is followed by a reception in the Perry Garden. November 7 and 8:
Library Used Book SaleThe popular annual Renouf/Nelson Library Used Book Sale will be held on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the West Gallery. Something for everyone ... come, browse, and support your library. (You may drop off book donations at the library until November 6).
Covenant! 2010: Pledge Campaign UnderwayThe Covenant! 2010 brochure illustrates how our budget dollars and our wealth of volunteers make St. Philip's many ministries possible. If you have not yet pledged, we ask you to prayerfully consider the value you place
on your membership in St. Philip's and join us on this important
discipleship pilgrimage. Your financial commitment through a pledge gives us confidence that we can plan
fearlessly for staff, programs, and servant ministries that do God's work in our Parish and community. Initial returns are encouraging. As of October 28, 308 pledgers have made commitments totaling $641,608. That is an increase of $65,741 over the dollars pledged by these same persons last year. It is also an increase of $29,964 over the pledge total at the end of the fifth week of last year's campaign. Thank you for your continued support, which is vital as we strive to continue and to build our ministries in this mission-oriented faith community. Pledge materials are also posted on St. Philip's Web site. |

Food for Thought

Stewardship: "S" Is for Sustaining, "H" Is for Help
Stewardship begins and ends with the understanding of God's ownership of all. Stewardship can be summarized as observing, caring for, and protecting the gifts that God has entrusted to us. Over the past few weeks, the bulletin has been featuring brief "word bites" on different aspects of Stewardship. "S" stood for sharing our treasure, talents, and skills; "T" for tithing, giving according to our hearts; "E" for being good stewards of the environment; "W" for worship; "A" for access to God's house; "R" for reverence; and "D" for devoting our time and talents to God's work. "S" represents "sustaining." In challenging times, our faith can be a constant resource that helps sustain us. During the Great Depression, St. Philip's founders turned their vision into a reality, and sustaining that vision requires prayerful thought as well as actions that move our mission and ministries forward. "H" represents "help." "Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me" (Matthew 25: 40) The church helps us identify areas in which we are called to ministry, and through our gifts and by acting as a community, we can help so many more than any individual can acting alone. God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Help Wanted: Adult Formation Adult Formation hosts are needed. This is the perfect role for someone who enjoys helping people make connections with offerings that will help them grow with God and build relationships in our community. Hosts serve one Sunday morning a month, visiting and welcoming classes, announcing class start times, posting signs, and taking attendance. Please contact Nancy Shiley if you would like to join in this welcoming and rewarding ministry.
Hot off the press ... November Loaves & Fishes
The November issue of Loaves & Fishes will be mailed next Tuesday. Click here to take a peak at an advance copy ... in color!
Accessibility at St. Philip's
Two projects related to accessibility have being completed on campus, making it easier for the elderly or for people dealing with disabilities to be in community. New benches have been placed outside the front of the church and to the east of the Murphey Gallery to provide seating for those waiting for transportation. Automatic door openers have been installed in the family restroom north of the Murphey Gallery and on the door from the restroom hallway out to the Perry Garden. Money for these improvements came from an existing restricted fund which was designated to be used for accessibility issues faced by the elderly and disabled. Another form of ministry to the elderly was begun this summer. An ongoing series of 10:15 a.m. forums addresses timely topics of concern to elders and those who love them. On November 1, Prof. Kenney Hegland from UA Law School will speak about Advance Directives. (In the November Loaves & Fishes, note the article that describes a family meeting inspired by a book by Prof. Hegland.) On November 8, the forum topic will be "What Gifts Do Our Elders Really Want for Christmas?" In addition, a Family Caregiver Support Group meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 10 a.m. For more information contact Brigid Waszczak or call 577-7792. Ministry to senior citizens, both at St. Philip's and in the wider
Tucson community, was a "dream" of many parishioners during the Mission
Discernment process.
