Sunday, October 4: First Sunday of the Month means ... First Sunday Music
At the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, Mozart's Coronation Mass will be presented as the service music by St. Philip's adult choirs, soloists, and St. Philip's Chamber Orchestra. This is one of the composer's larger masses, conceived on a grand orchestral scale. Because one of the movements will be used as the prelude to the service, you should plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before service time. The Sunday bulletin is available on St. Philip's Latest News page. First Sunday Food Drive As is customary on First Sundays, Sun City St. Philippians will be collecting food offerings in the fishpond garden. Food is shared with our own food pantry and the Community Food Bank. Your generosity to our neighbors in need is appreciated. First Sunday Young Professionals BrunchSt. Philip's Young Professionals will brunch together after the 11:15 a.m. service on October 4. Meet at the fishpond after the service. For more information about St. Philip's Young Professionals, contact Melissa at youngprofessionals@stphilipstucson.org. Covenant! 2010: Pledge Campaign UnderwaySt. Philip's thanks you for your past and continuing support and
commitment to the life and work of our church, as we strive to grow in
relationship with God and one another and to continue and build our
ministries as a mission-oriented faith community. Pledge packets
will be available outside the Church on October 4. If you have not picked yours up, we invite you to do so,
read the enclosed materials, prayerfully consider the value you place
on your membership in St. Philip's, and join us on this important
discipleship pilgrimage. Your financial commitment to God and this
parish in the form of a pledge gives us confidence that we can plan
fearlessly for staff, programs, and servant ministries. We know we can
count on your steadfast stewardship. Pledge materials are also posted on St. Philip's Web site. Series Encore begins This Week: Survival Skills in Time of RecessionLast summer's popular forum series returns this fall on Tuesday evenings beginning October 6, at 7 p.m. in La Paz. Stewardship: "W" Is for Worship, "A" is for Access
Stewardship begins and ends with the understanding of God's ownership of all. Stewardship can be summarized as observing, caring for, and protecting the gifts that God has entrusted to us. Over the past few weeks, the bulletin has been featuring brief "word bites" on different aspects of Stewardship. "S" stood for sharing our treasure, talents, and skills; "T" for tithing, giving according to our hearts; and "E" for being good stewards of the environment. "W" represents St. Philip's uplifting and comforting worship setting, the soaring music, the weekly communion and liturgy, and the generosity of spirit that says "everybody is welcome at our table." St. Philip's has obvious wealth in terms of the richness of the worship experience as well as the dedication and commitment of St. Philippians to using their talents to do God's work. However, St. Philip's is critically dependent on parishioners' generosity in the form of pledges to achieve the work that God has given us to do. "A" is found in the verse from Psalm 5 "but I through the greatness of your love have access to your house ..." (Grail translation), reminding us that we are called to the work of the good steward by welcoming everyone; opening our doors to our neighbors everywhere; and assuring that everyone has access to the ministries of St. Philip's by funding them prayerfully with love, time, multiple skills, and the financial resources God shares with us so generously. God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Help Wanted: Outreach
The Casa Maria sandwich ministry fixes lunch once every four weeks to feed more than 800 hungry and homeless people living in south-central Tucson. The coordinators are looking for a few good men or women to learn the ropes and eventually take over the leadership. Lots of information and training will be provided. If interested, contact Mary (721-6232), Ray (529-8925), or Don (742-6934). The After School Music and Homework Program has the happy problem of being "full up" with participants, which means more volunteer help is needed. No amount of help is insignificant, from an hour a week on up! Volunteers are needed to walk participants from Rio Vista School or to supervise homework or practice time. There are many other opportunities as well. For more information, contact Bruce (971-6779) or Laura (299-6561). School Ministries volunteers assist at three Title I public schools as
well as at Imago Dei, an Episcopal middle school that serves needy
students. For information about volunteering at the public schools,
contact Pat (293-6846); to learn about volunteer opportunities at Imago Dei, call the school at 882-4008. Learn about volunteering for Habitat for Humanity on Sunday, October 4, at 10:15 a.m. in the West Gallery. You may sign up for a "build with the rector date" or to work at the Habistore. For more information about volunteer opportunities at Habitat, contact Dani Hitchcock. More information about St. Philip's many Outreach ministries is found on St. Philip's Web site.
What Is the Diocesan Assessment?
In the Covenant! 2010 pledge campaign brochure, you will read that one of the budgeted items is the money St. Philip's pays toward the work of the Diocese. Sometimes the benefits that congregations reap from their Diocesan Mission Share are not obvious. In Bishop Smith's current e-pistle, he highlights some of the mission work in Arizona that this assessment supports. In the next e-pistle he will discuss mission work in the country and world.
La Mariposa Renovations Completed
The renovations to the restroom at La Mariposa Youth Center have been completed. A new vanity with double sinks has been added, and in addition, there is an in-floor mop sink for cleanup after special projects. The ceiling has been repaired, and cabinetry, tilework, and a low-water toilet have been installed. Many "dreams" during the Mission Discernment process had to do with supporting the youth as active members of St. Philip's community, and the completion of SPY's facility is a good start!
