What's Going On

Scottish Prayer BookScottish Liturgies in August
Summer at St. Philip's has traditionally been a time to celebrate the diversity of our spiritual community by exploring resources from throughout the worldwide Anglican Communion. During August, Celtic music and worship resources from the Book of Common Prayer of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Iona Abbey Worship Book will be used at 9 and 11:15 a.m. These services from different prayer books offer us opportunities to gain new perspectives on the mysteries of God. (Don't worry, we will not be worshipping in Gaelic.)

First Sunday Food Drive

Empty Food CupboardAs is our custom on First Sundays, the Sun City St. Philippians invite donations to the First Sunday Food Drive on August 2. Food is shared with our own food pantry and the Community Food Bank. Needed are canned fruits and vegatables, ready to eat meat dishes, peanut butter, pasta and pasta sauce, applesauce in small cups, and other food items. No glass containers please. As usual, food should be dropped off at the designated area adjacent to the fishpond garden. Thank you for your generosity.

Animal Fountain

Animal Fountain

Thanks to a generous donation from the Art Gallery Committee, the long-neglected animal fountain across from the Great Doors is being rebuilt. Because the original structure was made of adobe, it had deteriorated to the point that it could not be restored or salvaged. Warren Edminster, chair of the Buildings & Grounds Committee, found plans for the fountain, and it will be rebuilt to look the same but with updated, more durable construction techniques. When completed, it will be fully functioning as it was originally built.

Fine ArtSecond Sunday Fine Art Tour
Giotto, you say? On Sunday, August 9, tour seven centuries of St. Philip's art pieces from the fourteenth century to the near present. The tour will include detailed comments on the paintings, sculpture, and artifacts from the Samuel Kress and the Helen and John Murphey collections, located in the nave, chapel, baptistry, and transepts. Curious information on the building of the church will also be shared. Starting at 12:30 p.m. in the altar area in front of the portrait of St. Philip, the guided tour will last approximately an hour. Led by St. Philippian Harry Caldwell, Ph.D.

Migrant Food Packs: Donate Items and/or Help Assemble!
Over the next few weeks, the Outreach Commission will be sponsoring the collection of food items for migrant food packs, as has been done for the past few summers here at St. Philips. In conjunction with the No More Deaths organization, we have a new list of recommended donations: pop-top lid meat or tuna; nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, chips, fig bars, or cookies; granola, power, or snack bars; applesauce, pudding, or fruit cup with plastic spoon in small ziplock bag; peanut butter or cheese filled crackers; individual size non-caffeinated sports drink. Donated items will be collected on August 2, 9, and 16 in the West Gallery. The packs will be assembled on Sunday, August 16, at 11 a.m. in the Children's Chapel. Volunteers are welcome! Questions? Contact Pat Kinsman at 544-7886 or Chris Caldwell at 579-8229.

House of Deputies
General Convention 2009
The 76th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, held July 8-17, included worship, learning, and welcoming visitors from other parts of the Anglican Communion in addition to policy making. A great deal was accomplished at General Convention, none of it undertaken lightly. One of the most daunting challenges was trimming $17 million from the triennial budget while continuing to enable God's mission to be served. The 361 pieces of legislation included resolutions addressing the environment, social justice, evangelism, international development, human rights abuses, and much more.

The two resolutions that garnered the most media attention had to do with human sexuality and ministry. They were an attempt to find a middle way to address a resolution made at the 2006 General Convention, with the hoped end result of reflecting the reality of the Episcopal Church yet preserving the fragile unity of the Anglican Communion. In his July 26 sermon, Rector John Kitagawa outlines and comments on the two resolutions, D025 and C026. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori called them "more descriptive than prescriptive in nature" and reiterated the Episcopal Church's awareness of the concerns and sensibilities of other churches across the Anglican Communion. In her letter to the church written on July 22, she goes on to say that we value and seek to deepen our relationships around the Communion but at the same time we must be honest about who we are and respect diverse perspectives. Arizona Bishop Kirk Smith, on July 20, characterized General Convention as having taken "an important step towards health."

Responses from around the Anglican Communion will take time to develop, and reactions will undoubtedly be mixed. On July 27, the Archbishop of Canterbury released a measured comment in which he concluded "it is an opportunity for clarity, renewal and deeper relation with one another - and so also with Our Lord and his Father, in the power of the Spirit." As Episcopalians, we should be informed so we can participate knowledgably in dialogue about our church. The "latest news" page on St. Philip's Web site contains links to several sources of more information about Convention.
