Greetings!

With the increasing awareness of bullying in our school, I am reminded of the book "Everything You Needed to Know You Learned in Kindergarten."

When we first hear talk of bullying, the first image is a rough group of kids who make life miserable for other classmates. Eventually kids grow up - the bullies and the bullied. They go on to get jobs. From shouting at people in the boardroom to snide comments and even sabotaging others' work, bullying is an alarming, common and a hidden secret that employers and employees don' t know how to recognize or what to do when they see it.

What is Bullying and Why is it So hard to Identify at Your Workplace?

Bullying is the 'repeated, health-harming mistreatment of a target (the recipient) by a bully (the perpetrator)." Simple rudeness or incivility does not necessarily equate to bulling. But it is different than harassment which is bullying generally aimed at a cultural, religious, gender or specific bias. There are harassment training mandates and legal frameworks for harassment - bullying is tolerated.

Is Bullying Happening in your Workplace?

  • Yelling and using profanity
  • Public humiliation
  • Insults and name-calling
  • Constant and excessive criticism
  • Starting hateful rumors
  • Social deprivation - ignoring or excluding the person
  • Taking away responsibilities
  • Placing blame when none is warranted
  • Purposefully sabotaging work
  • Withholding required information
  • Constant nit-picking
  • Setting impossible deadlines or performance expectations
  • Squashing promotion efforts
  • Threatening termination
  • Inciting others to unwarranted complaints.

Bullying is as damaging as other forms of harassment and discrimination that have prescribed remedies and recourse under the law. Yet workplace bulling has been around for generations but only recently the cost of this tradition has been quantified. Read more...
