| Ask Bev, the Performance Doctor |
Dear Performance Doctor:
 I have been noticing that
there is negativity and low morale on
our team. I am an attorney and we work
in a very high stress environment. I
have an undergraduate degree in psychology. I set up a meeting and asked for honest feedback
about how I could improve my interpersonal skills. I think this is called 360 degree feedback. Here's what I heard. "He needs to allow others to feel good about
their ideas, even when he has a better plan. He is so focused on work he has no time to talk with us. He needs to listen better and he puts
people off by his body language. He can't control his emotions - he is
demanding, and belittling. When things backfire, he becomes verbally abusive but
then comes back to apologize. He also needs to be more patient -he needs to
understand what his people are feeling and thinking." I am stumped and very concerned -
What should I do? Interpersonally Stumped
|
| Your Solution |
Dear Interpersonally Stumped:
I want to congratulate you for being so brave and open for
feedback You really want to improve your self-management
skills. Remember 12% of employees leave their job because of their boss. We have been talking about the business case
for learning about Emotional Intelligence. In the set of personal competencies,
there is not only self-awareness (which we addressed last issue) but also self-management
. The question is "Can you manage your
emotions and behavior to a positive outcome?" I would recommend taking a
class in emotional intelligence and also taking the EI assessment to learn
where you need improvement , such as identifying your triggers and what sets
them off. If you go on the web, you will
see many training programs. Self Management encompasses mood management,
self-motivation, dealing with setbacks, dealing with stress, managing your
time, energy and work and avoiding unwanted addictive behavior. I think you
will get a lot out of studying this. All of us are human and get stressed and
angry with people around us, but the key is how you manage your emotions. You have three choices:
- Constructively
Managed Emotions - this is when you act as your own smoke detector -
paying attention to your triggers and have alternative ways of dealing
with stress and anger
Suppressing
Emotions Fall-out - this leads to chronic fatigue, muscle tension,
depression, excessive irritability, sarcasm, passive aggressive behavior,
silent sufferings, escaping feelings with the use of food, drugs,
medication and alcohol and aggressive driving. It is the worst choice of
all.
You can take advantage of
stress management and anger management classes through your EAP (employee assistance
program). I think you should tell your
team that you heard them and are working on alternative methods to manage your
emotions. Ask for positive feed-back and communicate often. Also don't see set-backs as fatal personal
flaws that can't be changed. You are are not burying your head in the sand but
taking a full court press to move from a manager to a leader. |

| Performance Check-Up | |
In the last issues we focused on EI's personal competence modules of
Self-Awareness and Self -Management In
the next issues we are going to focus on your Social Competence areas.
Social
Competence is more about how you are with other people. It is a combination of Social Awareness (can
you accurately identify your emotions and tendencies as I interact with you?)
and Relationship Management (can I manage the interaction I have with others
constructively and have a positive outcome?).
