Yeah, but not in front of people                                             02/16/12

Last year ended a little weird due to being broadsided (remember the Golf that I had just gotten?) during a snowstorm.  Thank God the woman who slid through the red light was in a small car rather than the big SUV's that were prevalent that night.

Adventures in insurance claims, my car getting totalled, doctor's visits, and buying another used car (yes, it's another Golf 5 speed with a skylight AND it has 50,000 less miles than the one I got crashed in!) have bled into the new year and some are still on-going.

As always, I remind you how short life can be.  Stop taking your life, and the lives of your loved ones, for granted.

Take the time, make the time, USE your time.  Tell them you love them and appreciate them and respect them.  Be thankful and grateful and let people know it.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

I am prepared to go anywhere,

provide it be forward.

-David Livingstone, Scottish missionary, (1813-1874)

Yeah,
but not in front of anybody . . .

drum setIn answer to one of my favorite life-challenges:
"DO something you always wanted to do," I now play the drums.

If you've been in one my workshops, I may have shared that I began playing the drums at age 39.  Even though it's been 5 years, I only mess around on them for about 20 minutes a month.  ...So I really don't have experience and I'm not very good.

You've also probably heard from me that it is a passion.  I love doing it, it puts a sparkle in my eye and gives me energy.  AND I'm not necessarily good at it and I don't care because the only person I do it for is me.

At any rate, I just started going to a new church nearby my home, and noticed that there was an electronic drum set up on the platform, but nobody was playing during service.  So I asked the keyboard player, Scott (a super gifted musician), if there was a different service (maybe a youth service?) that used drums.

He said, "No, we only have one service.  Do you play drums?"

"Yeah, but not in front of anybody."

He invited me to a casual practice on Wednesday night, and I was intrigued.  I snuck in early, hoping to just play around a little while Scott was there, and had planned to sneak out before the other people got there.  I was embarrassed because I'm not very good and I felt like I was infringing on the rest of the musicians by being there as such a novice.

I was so caught up, and Scott was so patient in working with me, that I didn't really notice when everyone got there.  They started working through the songs, and they were all very patient as I struggled to keep up in a (***very***) basic way with the one or two rhythms that I know.

Needless to say, 2 practices later, someone asked - "Are you gonna play for Sunday service?  We practice at 8am and service is at 10."

All these
nasty, ugly thoughts and doubts
flashed through my mind:

"I can't."
"Oh Geez, I'm not very good."
"I need months of practice before I even consider
playing in front of people."

"I don't know what I'm doing."
"What if I screw up?"
"There's probably some drummer in the church who'd look at this girl and say - 'what's she doing up there,
she doesn't even know what she's doing.' "

And something else won out.

I said "Yes, I will be there.

And that next Sunday morning, I woke up and realized that the last time I was on stage playing music was 28 years ago.  I  remembered playing the piano at a recital.  I had been given the position of honor by being placed as the last performer.  Ostensibly, because I was the most accomplished pianist in the group.

I had been defiant going in (teenager, remember), and hadn't practiced sufficiently.  I totally messed up, forgot everything, froze, and felt humiliated in front of a huge group of people.  It was an absolutely HORRIBLE feeling.

I didn't touch a piano for ten years.

I finally started playing around with it a little AND hated when people were listening or watching.  ("Yeah, but not in front of anybody!!")

And so, 28 years later, God gave me an opportunity to try again,
to confront my fear of humiliation and judgement.

As I said a prayer that Sunday morning, it's like God said - "You're not playing for the approval of the people.  You're playing for Me."

And I had peace in my heart and had a kick-butt BLAST playing the drums for the last 2 weeks with my church's praise team.

*****

3 ways to confront the nasty, ugly thoughts and doubts:

1) Be aware of the thoughts and doubts.

2) Instead of pushing them away, say "Oh yeah?  I do feel some of that.  And I am a little afraid.   And I'm going to do something different, anyway."

3) DECIDE to move forward.  Regardless of the fears of the past.  Take a step.  Give it a shot.

Hey, here's the deal.  If you mess up, and come on, you probably will at some point, at least you're doing SOMETHING.  If someone judges you, AT LEAST YOU GOT OUT THERE AND TRIED SOMETHING.  Most people who are busy judging are just sitting there, on their butts, feeling important because they're busy judging other people.
What good is that?

You, on the other hand, are moving.

Do it up.  Take a step to confront something that's been stuck inside of you.  Use your gifts, use your passion.

Never thought I'd be drumming in front of anyone . . .

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery.  In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training.  You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded.  Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!

What is coaching?  Coaching is not therapy or counseling.  One analogy is:  "Therapy is like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again.  Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile."  Tony Grant - Sydney University.

My Legacy Coaching, LLC - I help people to learn to live unregretted lives.

My passion is to give people the HOW tools to move and grow in direction of building the life they REALLY want.  I help people who are feeling stuck.

Instead of just surviving or "hanging in there,", I help my clients to thrive in their personal and/or professional lives.  I help them with balance, perspective, and resilience.

A willing heart does not stay stagnant while working to find their path.  A willing heart grows on its journey.  God won't let you go it alone.

You tell me what you are looking for (if you don't know, I'll help you uncover it), I share tools, and then I encourage and inspire and hold you accountable.

Encourage = to give heart.
Inspire = to give breath; to give life.

If you are ready to explore your options with coaching, or think a friend or family member might be ready, call or email me!  I offer a 20-30 minute free exploratory session to all new clients to answer questions and let them see how coaching might work in their lives.
