Dream into Action - with License Plates?!                                             01/05/12

Here's to you making changes in 2012!!

How often do you wonder if you're on the right path - with your family, with your relationships, with your job or your hobby?

Do you ever worry that you're not in the right place, doing the "right" thing for you?

Do you have a concern that you are "floating along" and missing out on your life?

I'm going to share a story that happened recently that will illustrate the point - how do you know if you're doing what you're supposed to be doing?

**
I absolutely love when things totally come together.

Some would call it happy coincidence.  Some would call it destiny.  Some would call it fate.  Some would simply look at the facts and state, "That's just the way it is."

In my life, I believe that it's God taking a little bit of time to reach out and show me that He cares, that He wants for me to keep reaching and growing and learning, and that it's one way that He shows me that I'm going down the right path.

I've been privileged in that I've had this happen several times recently.  Let me share a really cool confirmation I had recently in the most unlikely of places . . .

Dream into Action -
with license plates?!!

So I just got a new-to-me car and you know what that means:  sitting forever in the license plates place.  Arggggghh!  You know, where you pull your number and, look up, and there're like, 50 people in front of you?  And people are sitting there muttering about how long it's taking and what a pain in the butt it is to be there?

In the Denver Metro area, there are fewer offices than there used to be, and they are usually filled with people who do NOT really want to be there.  In fact, I go out of my way to drive to a farther office because the office near me can be really depressing.  I think it's actually a vicious cycle.  We customers are kinda cranky and unhappy having to take time off of work to go wait in line to pay money - and we can come across surly and unfriendly.  The employees start acting cranky and unfriendly because they have little control over what the customers have to pay or how long they wait in line and are still the target of the muttering and complaints of the unhappy customers.  It goes around and around and pretty soon, it seems like everyone in the entire office, customers and employees alike, are pretty crabby, kinda rude and have bad attitudes.

At any rate, I drive over there in the morning and, aghast, I walk in to see that I am the third (count 'em) person in line!  I get called right up to the counter only to realize that I had left one document at home.  MAJOR DRAG.  Big sigh, and out I march.  40 minutes home, 40 minutes back.  I decided to take the whole thing philosophically and I decided not to stress about it.  I forget things quite often.  I decide that I'm going to enjoy the stereo in the car I just got last night, and look for the lesson in my forgetfulness.

I get there and there are 30 people in front of me.  Sure enough, the guy behind me is cursing under his breath and sighing really loud and complaining.

Although I had taken a book to read, I couldn't help but notice one woman.  She definitely did NOT fit in to the reserved, often life-draining nature of government offices.  She was humming along to the radio, every time she got up to get someone's plates or printouts, you could see her walk/dancing over to the machine.  You could tell she was just enjoying it.  So I started watching her. So did other people. Definitely a rare breed, especially here.

After 15 or so minutes, she came to the front, and, with a huge grin, said "Good morning!"  We were so stunned that we didn't answer.  About 30 of us just sat there.  I finally answered back, weakly, but she wasn't happy with the result.  She told us she was here to help us get through the process more quickly, and said, "Good morning!!"  We answered this time.

With great humor and a lot of playful comments, she guided people in the group to various lines, explained a couple things, and asked and answered questions to make the process quicker and more enjoyable.

I went back to my book, but couldn't focus.  One of my dreams 4 years ago was to have a box of books in my car so that I could give one to someone if I wanted to.  I usually give books to people who are in need and are hurting, but I thought I'd give her a gift as a thank you (it's close to Christmas, so it fits).  I'd just gotten the car the night before and hadn't loaded personal stuff into it - so I wouldn't have had books with me EXCEPT that I'd taken a some books to my dad, but he'd asked me to hold onto them until the next day.  So I had books in the car!

I went out to the car, got a Tools of Hope book, and came back in.  I wanted to autograph it and thank her for her terrific attitude. I went to the security guard to ask her name.  He got it for me, with correct spelling, and I inscribed the book with a personal thank you note to her.  He told me she does that kind of stuff all the time, she's got a terrific attitude, and is the "light of that office."

I walked over to Charmaine give her book as her customer was writing his check.  I handed it to her with a big smile and told her "You make a difference and I wanted to thank you.  Merry Christmas."

She took the book, looked at it, and exclaimed "I KNOW YOU!"  I was taken aback and she said it again, louder. I said - "Where do you know me from?"  She thought about it for a bit, and answered, "The Potter's House, last year, you taught one of our classes!"  At this point, her customer finished writing his check and was ready to go, so I thanked her again, and excused myself.

My number finally came up and I ended up with the woman that had helped me earlier in the morning.  She was very helpful with a detail that I needed taken care of, and was sitting 2 cubes over from Charmaine.  Charmaine was so excited about her book, and, on her way to lunch break, stopped by and told me:  "I can't WAIT to read this!  When I was in your class, I was going through a nasty divorce and I desperately wanted to buy your book, but didn't have 2 nickels to rub together.  And this morning, you walk in and hand me a copy of the book I wanted but couldn't afford.  I can't wait to read it."  And she hurried away with tears threatening.

So what does DREAM INTO ACTION
HAVE TO DO WITH LICENSE PLATES?

I was stunned.  How does this happen?  Coincidence?  Maybe.  My dream, four years ago, was to have a box of books in the car to give away.  I had to take action to make the dream come true.  And now that it's here, I have new dreams of sharing tools with more and more people through speaking and training.  And sometimes, it can be difficult. This story was about seeing the "fruit" of my dream come true in an unexpected way, in an unexpected place.

I think it's God's way of encouraging me to keep going.  Even when things are tough, even when I'm not quite sure what I'm doing.  All of these things (me having to go back - I wouldn't have noticed her if I'd gotten my business done on the first trip with an empty office, having books in the car, and having taught her in a workshop over 18 months ago with over 60 people in it) happened and the joy on her face was a gift to me. And I had to be open to it to see it.

When you are struggling with your dreams. When you are in a battle to heal old wounds.  When you are in a bitter, unforgiving place and you "dream" of something better.  When your relationships are going crappy.  When you are in despair . . .

1) Be aware of your nasty attitude and how it is helping poison your environment and the people around you.  (This can be with your family, your co-workers, or out in public.)

2) Open your heart.  Soften it so that you can see things you otherwise might not pay attention to. Ex:  I was open to the extra time, driving, and gasoline because I forgot that paper.  Make a choice (de-CIDE) to change your attitude.

3) Listen.  Be willing to see the unexpected or the "coincidental."  Be willing to see how God is touching you and trying to get your attention.

4) Keep taking steps.  Keep going.  Seek your peace.  Go after the truth.  Get back up.  No matter what.

Going (twice) to get license plates made my day . . .

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery.  In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training.  You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded.  Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!

What is coaching?  Coaching is not therapy or counseling.  One analogy is:  "Therapy is like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again.  Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile."  Tony Grant - Sydney University.

My Legacy Coaching, LLC - I help people to learn to live unregretted lives.

My passion is to give people the HOW tools to move and grow in direction of building the life they REALLY want.  I help people who are feeling stuck.

Instead of just surviving or "hanging in there,", I help my clients to thrive in their personal and/or professional lives.  I help them with balance, perspective, and resilience.

A willing heart does not stay stagnant while working to find their path.  A willing heart grows on its journey.  God won't let you go it alone.

You tell me what you are looking for (if you don't know, I'll help you uncover it), I share tools, and then I encourage and inspire and hold you accountable.

Encourage = to give heart.
Inspire = to give breath; to give life.

If you are ready to explore your options with coaching, or think a friend or family member might be ready, call or email me!  I offer a 20-30 minute free exploratory session to all new clients to answer questions and let them see how coaching might work in their lives.
