The Golf Lesson (It's not what you think!)

Do you want hard or easy?

Do you want to put more energy into it or less?

Do you want to spend more or less?

What am I talking about?

Well, anything, really.  It's easier to go into something and learn it from a willing place vs. being forced into it, isn't it?

Whether it's relationships or your work or your family dynamics or a physical challenge that you have.

The lesson I learned down below, dealing with being thankful, is one that I have learned before, and keep being taught (because, apparently, I'm a slow learner.)

When you choose to be grateful, it will be easier on you.  You will put less energy into getting through life because, quite simply, you will suffer less.

Enjoy the Golf Lesson, in December, in Colorado.

Building you up -

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it,

is like wrapping a present and not giving it."

 William Arthur Ward

"Gratitude is the sweet fragrance of an opening heart."   Aine Belton

The Golf Lesson
(it's not what you think)

I just went through an exercise late this fall.  Some of you heard the first part of the story.  Here's the rest of the story . . .

At one point, I would have called it the "Let's teach Ana-Christina to trust" lesson.

At the mid-point, I would have called it "Let's watch what she does when she is dependent on others" lesson.

Now, I am calling it my "Golf lesson."  It's actually about Golf Gratitude.

And it's not what you think.

>>>>>>>  October, 2011
As I drove up into the mountains to speak at a conference, I was climbing up a steep 2 lane highway.  There was construction and quite a bit of large truck traffic.  At one point on the narrow road, deep in a canyon, the road work required the two lanes to become only one, with only one side of traffic going at a time.  As I was in the one-lane detour, my water light came on.  (A little history here:  the water light ALWAYS came on.  We'd gotten things fixed and it still went on intermittently.  So it wasn't a big deal.)  Well, it wasn't a big deal until the oil light went on (definitely not normal.) and the car kind of sighed and smoke started coming out of the engine.  Hmmm.  And I'm in one-way traffic surrounded by semi's in a canyon where I have no cell signal, and there's no shoulder to pull over on.

So I said a prayer that I'd be able to just make it into the next town (where I was slated to speak.)  I did crawl into town and the little car died at the first traffic light - about 50 yards from my hotel.  The light turned green and I put on my hazard lights and started waving people around me.  I called my husband Jerry to tell him what had happened (I had cell signal now!) and right after I called, I tried turning the car on, just for grins.  It shuddered awake, I hung up quickly, and limped into the parking garage where the car died, for the last time, as I coasted into a spot.

I breathed a prayer of relief and astonishment, and left the car quickly (as it was busily smoking up the entire parking garage.)  I presented my training, and 2 days later, Jerry came to tow me home. He said when he got there that the garage still smelled of burned plastic / oil.  Wow.  Maybe that was the smell I kept catching on all my clothing during the conference!!

>>>>>>>>> Early winter, 2011
We choose to drive older vehicles and spend our money elsewhere.  (The motorcycles are newer than the cars, for instance.)  So we were hoping to replace the engine or repair it.  After they opened it up, it was painfully clear that repair wasn't an option (dang) and we've been looking, but didn't find a replacement engine that would work.

In the meantime, I've been borrowing cars or riding my motorcycle (on nice days).  It's funny how not having what you're used to having can be a drag at first.

Then, I became grateful anytime I was borrowing a car or getting a ride. Asking for help and receiving help can be very humbling.

So last week, I called one of my sisters and said - "I got a new car!"
She said - "Cool, what kind!?"
I said, "A 2000 VW Golf."
Silence.
Then, she said, ". . . Well . . . what were you driving before?"
I said, laughing, "A 2000 VW Golf."

So in the last few weeks, I've gone from being upset and feeling guilty that I toasted the old car to being upset that we didn't just get a new one (I hate taking loans for stuff), to being grateful to paying a great used price on a great little used car off of Craigslist.

What's cool is that it cost us less to buy this than it would have to get an engine and get it installed in the old car.  AND it's a nicer car, even if it's the same age (this one has had spa treatments or something) AND it's stick shift, which I LOOOOOOOVE AND I have a skylight in this one (Jerry keeps reminding me it's a sunroof.  The more he reminds me, the more I say "skylight.")

And so, the blessing isn't as much about the new little car, it's about my new little attitude.  I was pissy, before - either feeling guilty or agitated - and now, I'm so grateful to have a vehicle.  And I worked through some other, personal issues, that came up as a direct result of not having that car for a while.  AND it's fun to drive.

When you pull out the gratitude, I swear it changes your heart.  As you are humble and ask for, and receive help (in my case, asking for rides or borrowing vehicles), it changes your heart.  It sounds so trite to tell you to be "grateful" and yet, as I live it, I know that it really works.

I dare ya.
When you're pissy or cranky or blaming or hurting, instead of focusing on what you don't have, take some time to really look at what you DO have . . .

It'll change your day if you let it.

Driving my "new" car under my new skylight and love-love-loving the manual transmission,
Ana-Christina

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery.  In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training.  You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded.  Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!

What is coaching?  Coaching is not therapy or counseling.  One analogy is:  "Therapy is like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again.  Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile."  Tony Grant - Sydney University.

My Legacy Coaching, LLC - I help people to learn to live unregretted lives.

My passion is to give people the HOW tools to move and grow in direction of building the life they REALLY want.  I help people who are feeling stuck.

Instead of just surviving or "hanging in there,", I help my clients to thrive in their personal and/or professional lives.  I help them with balance, perspective, and resilience.

A willing heart does not stay stagnant while working to find their path.  A willing heart grows on its journey.  God won't let you go it alone.

You tell me what you are looking for (if you don't know, I'll help you uncover it), I share tools, and then I encourage and inspire and hold you accountable.

Encourage = to give heart.
Inspire = to give breath; to give life.

If you are ready to explore your options with coaching, or think a friend or family member might be ready, call or email me!  I offer a 20-30 minute free exploratory session to all new clients to answer questions and let them see how coaching might work in their lives.
