FALLING OFF THE STAGE
|
|
The new book is here! The new book is here!
I had 681 pounds of books delivered to my home this week!
If I Only Had One Change to Tell You will be available for sale at the TOOLSOFHOPE website this weekend. Book launch party is set for Saturday, October 29 - watch for the invite!
It is an anthology of 16 people who submitted powerful stories - "for people like you, by people like you." We are honored to have a review from Dan Miller (48days.com) and the foreword by Dr. Jeffrey A. Zink. More on THAT later!!!!
See the title of the ToolsLetter?
Falling off the stage?
Curious about when, exactly, I might have done that (this last week), and what it has to do with YOUR life?!
Read on for a somewhat humorous tale of taking risk and bruising your pride - and HOW to keep going.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

To have a conviction that can help someone, you have to risk offending someone.
So stay safe and ineffective, or be dangerous and of worth.

FALLING OFF THE STAGE
|
Picture a small ballroom in a conference center. There are about 50-60 people in attendance for the ICSA-Colorado Customer Service Awards Breakfast where some amazing professionals are being honored.
The stage is carpeted in dark green carpet as is the floor on either side. What I don't realize is that the corners of the stage are actually clipped at a diagonal (vs. a square or rectangular stage.) If you've been in my rooms, you know that once I get on a roll, I get rather (ahem . . . ) enthusiastic.
No different here. I have some great new props and am in the middle of making a point when I step forward into . . . air. Right off the clipped corner.
I stepped / fell / tripped right off the stage!
In my defense, (I went and looked later), when you're not looking down, it really is difficult to see the visual cue of dark green on dark green carpet. As well, the step wasn't major - only about 10". So less of a cue.
Thank goodness, I just stumbled a bit and bruised my pride and ego. No actual fall and breakage of body parts! AND, you better bet I'm going to watch for stage issues in the future. That could have been much worse than a bruised ego, a red face due to embarrassment, and a second's delay in the presentation. It can be daunting when you know you want to make a change or take a risk. I've realized, in a way, that that my job as a speaker can be a little risky. Every time I step to the front of the room, I risk saying something to tick someone off. I risk "making a fool of myself." I risk being rejected. I risk being ignored. And maybe you have the same fears when you try something new.
How does this relate to you and making a change or taking that risk that you've been considering?
Well, here it is.
Every time YOU try something different: 1) It's new to you. 2) You're probably still learning it. 3) Something might go wrong. 4) You might look slightly silly as you're trying it. 5) Someone else might judge you. 6) It will probably take more time than normal. 7) You may or may not succeed the first time. Or the second. Or the third. 8) You're taking a risk.
So here's the challenge. See that list up there? Sure is full of a lot of "probably's" and "might's." If you let those get the best of you, you'll be less likely to try new things.
Last night, I was shaking my head that I actually fell off a stage during a presentation. I remembered a long-ago presentation in Las Vegas when I worked for a major homebuilder as a Purchasing Manager. The night before I was to present, I remember that I kept thinking "I just don't want to make a fool of myself and trip on stage." Over and over. Finally, I stopped myself and thought - "I'm not going to focus on that anymore. I'm going to focus on the value that I will give to the group instead."
And it worked. I didn't trip until about 8 years later. :)
3 STEPS TO MAKE CHANGES AND TAKE RISKS:
1) Anticipate that it will take longer, it won't be perfect, and something will probably go slightly wonky as you're trying it.
2) Learn to say "thank you" for the mistakes you make. Next time, you'll "watch where you're going" and not make that particular mistake. It creates an accelerated learning curve!
3) Believe in the value of what you're doing. I am willing to do what I do because, regardless of the risks, I believe I offer value to most of the people in my groups. When you're looking at making a change, really take a look at your motive, the reason that you're doing it, your purpose. And stand on that as you step out.
THE BONUS STEP: You already know this. KEEP GOING. I didn't trip off the stage and walk out of the room. I kept going with my presentation. Something wonky did happen. I learned from it and will watch for it in the future. I believed in the value of what I was presenting. SO I KEPT GOING.
DO THE SAME WITH YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE, YOUR NEXT RISK, YOUR NEXT CHANGE. Working on staying ON the stage! --Ana-Christina

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery. In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training. You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded. Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!

What is coaching? Coaching is not
therapy or counseling. One analogy is: "Therapy is like helping
someone with a broken leg to walk again. Coaching is helping them to
run the four minute mile." Tony Grant - Sydney University.
