upside down and submerged...

DE-FUNK or stay stuck

I was upside down, and submerged in murky, muddy lake water.  I was practicing the "eskimo roll."

I was in a new kayak, with a different paddle, and my husband was "spotting" me to help me as I practiced rolling back up to the surface.

I rolled by myself half a dozen times, so he relaxed his guard and went back to the beach.

At one point, I adjusted the new paddle, and went over as I kept practicing.  In the muddy water, upside down, I couldn't see the blade on the paddle, and as I went to roll myself up, I lost my "bite" on the water.

I'm new enough to rolling that I didn't know how to adjust, and although I tried 3 times, I knew that I wasn't going to be able to come up.  I settled into the water, upside down, and wet-exited.  (I released the skirt that holds me to my kayak and keeps the water out, then kicked my way out of the upside-down craft.)

In and of itself, the event didn't mean much to me other than I was tired, the paddle was new to me, I couldn't see underwater, and I need more practice.

Later, though, I really used that visual to help me.

When you are in a FUNK, it's hard to get out.

If you've been in one of my workshops, we talk about the fact that it could be ONE BIG THING that gets you down,
or a BUNCH OF LITTLE THINGS.

Either way, it's heavy, and it can get you down.

In a FUNK, so to speak.  Or being in the MURK. Or being depressed.

It's difficult, when you're bummed, to get the energy to get yourself out of the muddy, murky waters of life.

It's difficult to remember what you need to do, much less do it.

So I used the kayak visual to help me.  When you're depressed, or in a FUNK, or stuck in the MURKY waters...

1)  DO SOMETHING.
I was trying different things on my attempt to roll over.  (I shifted my paddle, changed my body position, relaxed and thought about what I was doing and how I could change it.)

2)  DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
What I was doing wasn't working, and I didn't want to drown, so I did something different.  I relaxed and pulled open the skirt so that I could wet-exit the boat.

3) ASK FOR HELP.  REACH OUT.
You can't always do things on your own.
I had used my spotters, but when I started flailing (my unwitting call for help,) they were still on alert for me.  What I didn't know is that my husband and son, Chris, were watching carefully from the beach.  When they saw that I was having trouble, they started running into the water to help me if I needed it.  When they saw that I was out of the boat, they relaxed and went back.

4)  KEEP PRACTICING.
Oooh, I was agitated about having to wet-exit.  After all, I'd rolled successfully so many times, and then to fail and not know exactly why?  Ticked me off, actually.  So, I waited a couple hours, and went back in, with a spotter again.

You've got to keep trying.  Even if you're feeling bad, and stuck, and feel blinded by your circumstances, KEEP TRYING DIFFERENT THINGS until you get back up.

This applies to real-life, not just a kayak in a lake!!!

If you've lost the energy for that, make the choice to ask for help.  It's there.  People are out there, resources, information.

Don't stay stuck "underwater," in the murk.  DE-FUNKIFY.

Build the life you REALLY want.  Ana-Christina

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery.  In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training.  You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded.  Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!

I was present last night at your presentation. I want you to know what an impact you made on me!!  I am 60 years old and have attended motivational speeches before; but never have I come away from one feeling so sure of what I needed to do to change my heart and my life.

What is coaching?  Coaching is not therapy or counseling.  One analogy is:  "Therapy is like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again.  Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile."  Tony Grant - Sydney University.

My Legacy Coaching, LLC - I help people to learn to live unregretted lives.

My passion is to give people the HOW tools to move and grow in direction of building the life they REALLY want.  I help people who are feeling stuck.

Instead of just surviving or "hanging in there,", I help my clients to thrive in their personal and/or professional lives.  I help them with balance, perspective, and resilience.

A willing heart does not stay stagnant while working with me.

You tell me what you are looking for (if you don't know, I'll help you uncover it), I share tools, and then I encourage and inspire and hold you accountable.

Encourage = to give heart.
Inspire = to give breath; to give life.

If you are ready to explore your options with coaching, or think a friend or family member might be ready, call or email me!  I offer a 20-30 minute free exploratory session to all new clients to answer questions and let them see how coaching might work in their lives.
