Yes BUTS
|
What's up with the BUTS?
Seriously.
I have a secret. I know something that sucks the life out of you. It limits you and keeps you from doing the things that you want to do. The things you really know you need to do. It holds you back.
It takes your success. It squanders your gifts, strengths, and passions. It even squanders your money and your relationships.
IT'S THE BUTS IN YOUR LIFE.
Not your butt (no, it's not a typo.) YOUR BUTS.
I've taught this for years in sales trainings. Now, I use it (very effectively, may I add!) with my individual coaching clients and in some of my workshops. Very simple. Very impactful.
It's the awareness that when you use the word BUT in a sentence, you effectively negate the words that came before it. You're pretending to say YES, and then you dismiss it with BUT. Yes, BUT.
Read that again really quick.
We do it so much that we don't realize that when we use it like that, it puts us into a victim, or martyr stance. It makes us sound weak. It makes us think weak. If you have a choice, will you choose weak or strong?
I bet you chose strong. 'Cause that's who you are meant to be.
So here's the HOW:
___________
BUT example: I'm really sorry that I got mad at you, BUT when you were late, it really ticked me off.
BUT TRANSLATION? When you were late, it really ticked me off. I'm not really that sorry - I want to justify myself, though.
JUST SAY NO TO BUTS TRANSLATION: I'm really sorry that I got mad at you. Period.
___________
BUT example: I'd really like to ___, BUT I don't have the money right now.
BUT TRANSLATION? I don't want to spend that money right now. I'm probably not telling the whole truth - I probably have the money, even though I'm using it for something else...(like mortgage or car payments, or food.) JUST SAY NO TO BUTS TRANSLATION: Even though I'd like to ___, I'm using my money toward different goals right now. OR I'd really like to _______, AND I'm tightly budgeted right now and that doesn't fit into my budget.
___________
BUT example:
I know I really should exercise / eat better / lose weight / take care of myself
BUT I don't have the time.
BUT
TRANSLATION? I don't have the time. I'm controlled by my time. I'm a victim of time. It's not my fault. JUST SAY NO TO BUTS TRANSLATION: I know I really should take care of myself AND I haven't done it. OR I know I really should take care of myself. I haven't made it a priority.
___________
Take a second and look back at the red phrases. Say them to yourself.
Now read the green ones and say them to yourself.
Do the red or green ones sound stronger and more in control?
So.
Quick Tool >>>>> Be aware of your Yes, BUTS. Listen to people around you and see if you hear BUTS.
Quick Tool >>>>> When you apologize, try it with NO BUTS in
the conversation. Just say NO to BUTS. Take accountability for what
you are saying sorry for! Then you will have a better chance of being
sincere in your apology.
Quick Tool >>>>> When you are working on getting rid of your Yes BUTS, insert AND and see how it changes your sentence. It will strengthen your thoughts, your sincerity, and your stance. You will find that it is a more honest way to communicate. It's a fascinating dynamic.
Act on your new perspective. Take steps, move, and grow toward your goals that you've been BUT-TING.
Build the life you REALLY want.

TOOL of the Day
|
Do something you "always wanted to do."
*** He was holding two drumsticks and was squished into the corner of my basement behind my drumset.
Have you ever seen someone just GLOW when they are doing something they absolutely love? He was beaming.
He's a father with three grown children, and he was doing something he wanted to do since he was 5 years old.
I met Tom as we were both students in a class this summer. He found out I played the drums and asked me about it.
I told him I'd started playing at 39 years old and invited him over any time.
Months later, I thought about him and wondered if he'd ever take me up on it. I knew he was really interested to try it, but I didn't know if he would follow through. Thumbs up to him - he did!
I am not a drum teacher. By any means.
However, I AM a really, really good trainer when I love something.
So after about 90 minutes of basic instruction, he was playing along with Def Leppard turned up really loud on my stereo. REALLY LOUD. Shake-the-basement-windows-loud.
And he looked like he was loving every minute of it. And he's wanted to try it for over 50 years.
He did great. Because he stepped out of his comfort zone. Because he took a chance. Because he did something new.
It was absolutely amazing for me to see the same joy on his face that I feel every time I sit down to play.
I don't care if I'm "good" - I just care that I love it and it puts energy into my life and into my heart. It's one of my passions.
What's one thing you "always wanted to do?"
So here's the HOW:
1) Decide the one thing you want to shoot for2) Pick one baby step that you will to take 3) Pick a time limit to take that step4) Tell someone you trust about your plan5) Take your step6) Celebrate! You're one step further than you were. 7) Repeat steps 2-6. :)
Small print:
I recently revisited my 48 Days to the Work You Love Workbook (Dan Miller, 48days.com.) I worked through it four years ago. As I went through it this last spring, I was stunned to see that I have met over 90% of the goals that I had set.
I've done more than I could have even imagined back then. (The book wasn't even in my thoughts at that time!) Writing your goals is a powerful thing. Writing steps to reaching them adds action to the power. Reading the steps out loud cements it further in your mind because you say it and then hear it.
Taking one step at a time will lead you to build the "wealth of fully experiencing your life" that Thoreau talks about.
Simple steps. Amazing results.
I've learned to lean on God during the hard, the confusing, and the joyful times. Even through difficult circumstances, I feel a peace and joy that I've only found by going to Him with my heart. "Glory to Him, who, working through us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine." Eph. 3:19-20

My Legacy Coaching, LLC

Ana-Christina's
power as a coach comes from her profound ability to draw out your inner
most passions and beliefs and weave them together in such a concise way
that you can carry them with you every single day.
Her absolute
love of what she does -- helping us find and connect with our authentic
selves and desires -- is infectious and compels you to engage with both
her and the process 110%. Kristen (Kaye) Taavialma Dean of Academics, KIPP Denver Collegiate High School and Aspiring Actress
I have been out of pocket the last month as I shifted my focus to coaching. I coach groups through my workshops, and I am also working with individual clients as a life coach - what I call Legacy Coaching. I've totally revamped my website and now MyLegacyCoaching.com and ToolsOfHope.com funnel into the same web page.
What is coaching? Coaching is not
therapy or counseling. One analogy is: "Therapy is like helping
someone with a broken leg to walk again. Coaching is helping them to
run the four minute mile." Tony Grant - Sydney University.
My Legacy Coaching, LLC - I help people to learn to live unregretted lives.
I spent a lot of years with guilt and regret and it hurt me and those around me.
I'm not there anymore. I got my head and my heart on straight and I'm moving forward at a stunning rate.
My passion is to give people the HOW tools to move and grow in direction of building the life they REALLY want. I help people who are feeling stuck.
Instead of just surviving or "hanging in there,", I help my clients to thrive in their personal and/or professional lives. I help them with balance, perspective, and resilience.
A willing heart does not stay stagnant while working with me.
You tell me what you are looking for (if you don't know, I'll help you uncover it), I share tools, and then I encourage and inspire and hold you accountable.
Encourage = to give heart. Inspire = to give breath; to give life.
If you are ready to explore your options with coaching, or think a friend or family member might be ready, call or email me! I offer a 20-30 minute free exploratory session to all new clients to answer questions and let them see how coaching might work in their lives.

Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery. In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training. You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded. Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!
