do something...
D I F F E r E N T
***
So. As I sit here writing on a sunny, warm, July day in Colorado, I'm struck by the picture I make.
I'm trying something D I F F E r E N T.
I am wearing one of my favorite red t-shirts and my nice-fitting gray shorts.
-- Those of you who've known me for a while know that, historically, I've tended to wear clothing that's too big for me. These shorts, in contrast, actually fit me! --
And, (picture this please) long, heavy black socks with shin-high black leather motorcycle boots.
Brand-spanking new, too.
Why? Well, because I'm doing something
D I F F E r E N T.
It struck me today during a wonderful conversation with my mom. Sometimes you know you need a change. You want a change.
But you don't know what on earth to do.
So.
If you can't think of something,
(or even if you can, but you want to really get creative...)
get with someone else you love, respect, admire.
Ask them about what they love to do. If it even remotely (and I do mean REMOTELY) interests you on any level at all, ask them if they would show you / teach you / involve you in their passion.
Even if you don't like it, that's ok. At least you tried it. At least you did something D I F F E r E N T.
You grew brain cells in the process, you learned something new, you gained perspective.
You saw how easy they make it look.
And hopefully you laughed a little in the process. If you're super lucky, you laughed a LOT.
I have been drawn into my husband's passion - motorcycle riding.
Thus the new boots that I'm breaking in as I clump and stomp around my home today.
Do something D I F F E r E N T.
Can you just imagine
what it will feel like after you try ?

The woman in the YELLOW BLOUSE
|
| I was at McDonald's meeting with a friend the other day.
We were there for over an hour. Toward the end of our time, I noticed an older woman in a bright yellow blouse sit down with her little breakfast. She was just behind my friend and in my line of sight.
What I noted about her was her imperious and regal carriage. Just her body language told me that she was used to directing and telling people what to do. As she was finishing her meal, she raised her voice and motioned briskly to someone behind me as she half-yelled "Come here please."
And again, curtly, "Come HERE young man."
Her voice carried and her tone said that she was used to being listened to. I mentally raised my eyebrows and mentally rolled my eyes, thinking, "Gosh, sheeee's kinda mean..." and "How rude..."
As I watched, a tall and lanky young man, probably in his early twenties, came over to her table. You could tell he didn't really know what was going on. She leaned in, softened her voice, and pressed a folded bill into his hand.
Although I didn't hear the full exchange, it was clear that she was thanking him, very graciously. She told him that she'd been watching him.
She sincerely shared that she saw him there every morning and thanked him for being so pleasant and kind to her and to other customers.
***************
When I saw and heard that exchange, I mentally kicked myself in the backside. I'd judged her by her looks and her tone. Who knows, maybe she's just hard of hearing and talks loudly? Maybe she carries herself that way out of sheer confidence -or- maybe her back is stiff.
Either way, I was humbled and kept thinking about her. As my friend and I hugged goodbye and went out different door to our cars, I looked for the woman in the yellow blouse. I wanted to go to my car and get her one of my books - as a thank you and to let her know that her act of kindness was well-noted.
But she was gone.
So I was left thinking about her.
And thinking about how my judgemental nature can do a grave disservice to those around me.
What would happen if you stopped judging so much?
How would your life shift and how would you impact people around you if you stopped being so guarded and suspicious? What would happen if you started being more CURIOUS and ACCEPTING?
WATCH. LISTEN.
Give people the benefit of the doubt. (You never know what's going on in their hearts and lives. Or behind closed doors.)
Thank people for their acts of kindness. Give a compliment. Open your heart to pick someone else up.
You NEVER NEVER KNOW how your gratitude and thankfulness will impact another's heart.
