do you look up to?
100 year old advice... I look in different places for new tools. I also look at people around me who I can look up to as role models or mentors.
If they have some strong qualities that I'd like to grow in myself, I pay attention. She grew up with dirt floors, no electricity, and no indoor plumbing. I don't even think plastic was invented yet. She was the second of twelve children and has survived her parents, her siblings, two husbands, and an infant at childbirth. She was a young widow raising two little girls. In tough times, under tough circumstances.
She has LIVED. She was a horsewoman when being athletic wasn't "in." This is a woman who still belly-laughs so hard that she doubles over with tears in her eyes. She is sharp and is an extraordinarily generous and caring individual. And does she ever have stories...
Her name is Julieta. She is my grandmother. She turns 101 this July. She is loved and held dear by many. The way I figure it, mentoring advice from this positive, healthy 100 year old is pretty powerful advice.
And this mentoring has the potential to produce effective tools that I can use in my own life. This is a woman who has something to teach on "resilience." I asked "Mamane" what advice she would give me if I was down or sad. She didn't exactly understand what I was asking (a combination of 100-year-old ears trying to hear through hearing aids along with a granddaughter for whom Spanish is still a challenge as a second language), so I asked her in a different way.
"In your life, what have you done when you were having a rough time or were down and depressed?"
She thought very carefully, creased her brow, and the first thing out of her mouth was
Then she thought some more.
"I try not to go off and do something rash
based on bad advice or bad feelings.
I have always worked to stay calm.
(When things were tough...) I would hope for another opportunity and look for other ways to solve the problem and take care of it."
Simple and profound. 100 year old advice.
Resiliency in action. Look for role models in your life.
People who show you what you want to be like.
Look for mentors.
Those who help teach you HOW to do it.
Taking it a step further... Can you just imagine what it will look and feel like when YOU are a role model or mentor for those around you?

There are jump-start ideas in Tools of Hope.
But for every idea listed in the book,
there are unlimited others you can use to
figure out - "Who do you look up to?"
It's really a matter of you making the choice to do it.

LIVE before you die |
My friend, Rose, recommended a movie -
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. She said I would love it.
I did.
In the movie, this eccentric old man talks about how your life is important "because of the life you live before you die."
live before you die.
Morbid sounding, I know, but I think it's worth a moment. Recently, and inadvertently, I've read books and articles, heard stories, and watched a couple movies that all had a similar theme:
They all had to do with someone really LIVING their life -
before they died.
Many of these stories were NOT necessarily about people who were dying in a medical sense. In fact, many of the stories were about normal people like you and me. Just going about our busy lives. You know - going about our business. I mean, our BUSY-NESS. Maybe emotionally dying a little inside, every day.
live before you die.
You know how it goes... If you know you have a lot of something, you tend to be a little more careless with it. You don't pay attention to it, you might waste a little, it might go rotten, it might die.
If, on the other hand, you know that you have a limited quantity, or that it's fragile, or that it's costly, you might be a little more careful in how you use it. That's how life is, you guys.
live before you die.
As I was cleaning out a cabinet last month, I found a special book that I must have tucked away years ago and forgotten about. It's a beautiful little book called Live Like You Were Dying. Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman created it in tandem with Tim McGraw and he wrote the song Live Like You Were Dying.
It's a reminder.
We need those.
It's about taking the time.
It's about making the choice
instead of pretending like they are all already made for us.
It's about appreciating the small things.
Have that conversation you've been avoiding.
It's about doing that one thing.
Take the chance.
Take the risk.
To take the baby steps
to follow your heart.
To listen.
To feel.
To love.
. . . To live before you die.

What's new? Ebooks and legacies |
An e-book is coming. An e-book is coming!
My newest work-in-process is the Tools of Hope e-book. It will be available on the www.ToolsOfHope.com website.
The e-book has a lot of color. It'll be great because readers can receive their purchase quickly and have the content without waiting for it to ship.
I'll let you know when it's up and available. Same content. Different look.
It will be followed closely by my summer project of a
Tools of Hope Workbook (lots of people have asked for that.)

Tools of Hope Workshops
Our team was so impressed with your professionalism and method of delivery. In fact, your insightful real life stories turned out to be the highlight of the training. You were able to speak to our team in a language familiar to them and to provide them with the tips and techniques with which most everyone needs to be reminded. Our team met shortly after the training and was energized and had an increased level of confidence in their ability to tackle every day stress!
