NEXT STEP RECOVERY, INC
Tiger Mother
Next Step Recovery Houses for Men and Women
May 2011
Dear Friends and Family,

I recently attended a professional conference whose keynote speaker was Amy Chua, author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother in Philadelphia, PA. Sitting in the audience beside me were dear colleagues who had mentored me as a teenager in recovery at Cedu. Behind me was a mentor from my early 20s when I lived and worked with handicapped children in an extraordinary community, Camphill Special Schools in Pennsylvania.

I realized that these mentors and friends of more than 20 years were my own Tiger Mothers. They loved me before I was able to love myself, and they helped me discover my potential. Each one helped shaped who I am today, and I have followed in their footsteps by helping men and women create a path to their own personal recovery.

I am so grateful for the lesson that my mentors taught me so long ago - the knowledge that I always have the power to choose the life I want despite any fear or insecurity I may feel inside. I have shared this lesson so many times since then, and it is as powerful today as it was when I first encountered it.

Having spent many years now as a mentor myself, I know that taking the time to look, listen, and love someone else can transform not only a human life but also his or her family and community. Even when loving someone isn't easy, even when that person doesn't want to be loved by someone else.

No one said recovery was easy. But together, with the right support, we can overcome our fears and choose to live with strength and courage like the mighty Tiger who embodies these qualities. I am honored to walk that path with each of you and grateful for those who have led the way.

Anniversary Band
NSR's Fifth Anniversary

Our Fifth Anniversary Celebration on May 1 was a great success. The weather was beautiful, and the BBQ was delicious thanks to Toney's talents on the grill and Lauren's talents in the kitchen. But the best part, of course, was spending the afternoon with so many residents, alumni, families and friends. We feel so blessed to know each of you.

One of the highlights of our event was the live music provided by several of our talented residents who helped us rock out in style.

We would like to thank all the wonderful sponsors who helped make our fundraising raffle a success including The Grove Park Inn, Boca Restaurant, Mela, Healing Sensations Massage, Global Vision Healing Arts, Gloria Chan's Timeless Healing Acupuncture, Reiki Master Linda Jones, classical guitarist James Barr, Wild Birds' Unlimited, and fine artist Gabe McShane. We would also like to acknowledge Pete Blackshaw of Lakehouse Music for his continued interest and support of NSR.

Thanks to everyone's generous support, we raised more than $3,000 for our recovery programs and services.

Alumni Next Steps

One of best things about working with individuals in recovery are the lifelong relationships we make. So many of our alumni continue to be a part of the Next Step Recovery family.  We are always grateful and honored to hear how they are doing and to share in their successes, like the heartfelt letter we received recently:

I am taking life one day at a time again. Moved to Tennessee to be with my fiancé. I will always look back fondly on my Next Step experience because it really helped me break the cycle and gave me the tools to come back from a path that I didn't want to travel. I do want you to know that you made a difference in my life at a very pivotal point. All my love, Mike

The 5th Anniversary Party for Next Step Recovery is over. The leftovers stacked high on the counters. Boys to men sort through for leftovers. Some missed the celebration for work, but most worked at the celebration.

Parents and loved ones enjoyed the sun and music and meeting each other but mostly seeing our sons healthy and happy again. It's been years for some of us. Recovery is such a common word but holds lives captive without it.

I didn't think I'd ever be one to write a testimony for a place that my son stayed at because he usually moved out, moved on and kept running.

I'm blessed today to be able to say he truly is in recovery. He couldn't have done it without Next Step Recovery.

Susan really cares as does the rest of the staff. The resources, schedule, structure and atmosphere are taking my family to a wonderful place to be. My son loves Next Step, the people, the food and Asheville.

Thank God and Next Step for giving me back my son and giving him back his life and new beginning!
