Playwright Profile
Isaac Rathbone is a Brooklyn-based playwright and a graduate of Hofstra University. His NYC production credits include work presented at the NYC International Fringe Festival, the Kraine Theatre, Teatro Iati, Manhattan Rep, Centerstage NY, the Secret Theatre, the Brooklyn Lyceum and the South Oxford Space. His work has been seen through out New York State including Long Island and various regions of upstate and western New York. His true crime drama, Little Eva, premiered in Cooperstown (NY); staged in the actual courtroom where the trial of Eva Coo took place in 1934. He was a featured Eva Coo expert on Investigation Discovery's "Deadly Women" series. Isaac has had his plays seen across the country including Boston, Providence, Omaha, Minnesota and Alaska. He is a 2008 Heideman Award finalist by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, a 2007 Nantucket Short Play Finalist, and received a nomination for the 2009 Theatre Arts Guild of Omaha Awards. He is a founding member and Managing Director of Oracle Theatre Inc.

JulieAnn Charest Govang, has been involved in theatre and the arts for about 35 years, which is only a drop in the bucket for some, but for a woman in her 40s, its a considerable amount of time. She has been seen onstage throughout Massachusetts, and has also enjoyed a very positive directing career.  She is using whatever resources she has to spread the wealth she's found in the arts to as many people as she can.  One of the more recent resources has been herself!  For classes and teaching purposes, JulieAnn has taken to writing original works and adapting current stories to suit the needs of her students. Her new release of A Christmas Carol was adapted for a one-act fundraiser for her school's Spring musical, but JulieAnn has her eyes on a few other books she hopes to collaborate on with others to make into full-length musicals for youth.

At the age of ten, Sylvia Davenport-Veith was cast as the Widow Douglas in a children's theatre production of Tom Sawyer. After she stopped weeping over failing to land the part of Becky Thatcher, Sylvia discovered the fantastic bonanza that comes with character roles. She also never forgot the electric excitement pulsing through the cast as each child waited to step on stage for the first time.  Many years have passed since that long ago debut, but nothing has diminished Sylvia's love of theatre. After earning a BFA in Theatre (High Honors) and M.Ed. in English Education from the University of Florida, Sylvia relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she continued to appear on stage at a variety of theatres. Additionally, she taught classes and directed plays of all genres for the Shiloh High School Theatre Department (a.k.a. Shiloh Onstage) in Snellville, Georgia. Sylvia directed her own play, Prom Night, for Shiloh Onstage in 2006. She is thrilled the play won Second Place in the 2008 Beverly Hills Theatre Guild Marilyn Hall Playwriting for Youth Competition. Other plays by Sylvia include: Grandmothers' Gifts (to be presented at The Bonderman Symposium Playwright Slam at the Indiana Repertory Company in March 2009); and A Snowy Night In Iowa (selected by Process Theatre for its annual Read-a-Thon in November 2008).  Sylvia is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America; The American Screenwriter's Association; The American Alliance for Theatre and Education; and Working Title Playwrights.

  • X-Mas Marks the Spot might hit many readers to some degree. A daughter has finally had enough of her over-bearing mother as they prepare for the holiday season. This title is also available via Amazon.com, and in Amazon's Kindle format.

Playwright Lon Rogers has released his second play with JAC, the emotionally-charged Second Son.  Katie, a toddler, is abducted at a local park. Jordan, her teenage brother and babysitter left her at the kiddy swings for two minutes- only two minutes- to get ice cream at the street vendor. When he turned back to the swings, he finds that Katie has simply disappeared. The tragedy is compounded when Jordan unwittingly provides the kidnapper with damaging information. He receives no sympathy from his unforgiving mother. Overcome with feelings of guilt, shame and rejection, Jordan runs away from home. Found by his father days later, he learns from him a family secret that puts mother and son on a path of reconciliation and healing. Second Son is the story of a shattered family finding deliverance in the midst of tragedy. ISBN #1-60513-136-9; JAC#2011-0041.  This title is also available on Amazon.com, and in Amazon's Kindle format.

JAC is releasing a new take on an old classic - A Christmas Carol. In this adaptation, JAC's own JulieAnn Charest Govang has pulled together a one-act radio-play format piece for youth or adults, perfect for fundraisers, schools, or just a part of a larger evening of holiday entertainment. ISBN 1-60513-145-8; JAC #2012-0001.  This title is also available via Amazon.com, as well as in Amazon's Kindle format.

Sylvia Davenport-Veith is back to JAC with her latest hilarious short, Ochlophobia.  It's Phoebe's first day on the job as a professional hair and make-up artist.  Everything is going WRONG!  Her crazed client, Suzanne- a best-selling author of psycho help books-not only suffers from ochlophobia (a fear of crowds), but also has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).  It is Phoebe's job to get Suzanne ready to appear in a kooky wedding with a Humane Society theme that will be broadcast live to millions of viewers- far too much for her to face.  For Suzanne, it's a real nail-biter.  For audiences, it's one hilarious ride! ISBN #1-60513-137-7; JAC #2011-0042. This title is also available via Amazon.com, and will soon be in Amazon's Kindle format.

Don't be Afraid of Your Shadow!

Boston Children's Theatre Presents World Premiere Musical Calvin's Monster

BOSTON, MA: Who is Calvin's monster? It's his shadow! In a new musical adapted by Burgess Clark and based on the book "Fairy Tale Moments" by Marcia Trimble, Calvin learns how to overcome his fears- with a little help from his fairy tale friends. Written for children and the young at heart, CALVIN'S MONSTER will be performed by Boston Children's Theatre (BCT) at the Roberts Studio Theatre at the Boston Center for the Arts on February 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 2 pm.

An engaging, entertaining and whimsical story, CALVIN'S MONSTER tells a modern tale about friendship. staying strong, and overcoming adversity. According to CALVIN'S MONSTER director and BCT Executive Artistic Director Burgess Clark, the storyline and musical numbers will appeal to all ages. "Parents will appreciate the humorous way in which important messages about facing our fears is communicated, and children will identify with the fun and quirky characters who befriend Calvin," explained Clark. "Peter Pan, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Snow White all make appearances, and in a nod to our modern era, they all text and use cell phones. This is a new musical for a new generation of theater audiences."

CALVIN'S MONSTER follows the adventures of 8-year old Calvin and his school librarian as he turns to her for help in understanding what he's afraid of and how to overcome those fears. By enlisting the help of beloved fairy tale characters who come to life in 2012, Calvin realizes that he's not alone and that everyone has obstacles to overcome. Encouraged by his new friends, Calvin develops the tools he needs to face his fears and become stronger in the face of adversity. With a musical score by Jessie Soursourian and Austin Davy, CALVIN'S MONSTER will have audiences singing about dragons, self esteem and the value of friendship.

CALVIN'S MONSTER features Boston actress Shana Dirik as Mrs. Knowley together with a cast of 12 young local actors between the ages of 12 and 19. The cast includes Bedford resident Natalie Vatcher as 'Rapunzel'; Belmont resident Alex Aroyan as 'Dragon'; Boxford resident Kristina Kastrinelis as 'Snow White'; Braintree resident Rachel Padell as 'Cinderella'; Charlestown resident Kevin Paquette as 'Wolf'; Marblehead resident Paige Vigneron 'Swing'; Newburyport resident Colin Budzyna as 'Calvin'; Newton resident Alex Levy as 'Jack'; Sherborn resident Nolan Murphy as 'Peter Pan'; and Stoneham resident Emily Pinto as 'Little Red Riding Hood.'

CALVIN'S MONSTER will be performed at the Roberts Studio Theatre at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street, Boston, MA on Saturdays and Sundays February 4, 5, 11 and 12. All performances are at 2 pm. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased by visiting the BCT website at www.bostonchildrenstheatre.org or calling the BCT Box Office at 617-424-6634, x222.
