New Releases

Chris Carole-Meet Santa by Nicholas ContiOne of our latest releases comes from JAC's Nicholas Conti.  It's a touching seasonal one-act called Chris Carole-Meet Santa. Chris Carole is a street musician who's life has been a chapter out of the book of hard knocks. Married young, abandoned by her husband, and forced to place her three children in someone else's care, Chris makes a paltry living playing Christmas Music on a portable cassette player, tambourine and drum. Whenever extra is available, she gives it to the soup kitchen where she volunteers. Imagine her surprise, when her children, now in their teens with adopted families, team up and start a search for their mother!  Enter Nick, who in addition to his job at Social Services, collects donations in his Santa suit during Christmastime to help support the Homeless Shelter which redeemed him and saved him ten years earlier. Through Nick, Chris' children find a link and begin their quest with the aid of a woman hard on her luck, but great in heart.

Chris Hare's SCRAPSAlso new to our catalog, Chris Hare brings us another short play gem featuring one man and one woman.  Previously released, Hare's Horrormones received rave reviews for its comical banter in a more than stressful circumstance.  SCRAPS revisits the two character format, but this time we visit with Jordan and Giselle, a 30-something couple at the brink of their 5-year wedding anniversary. On New Year's Eve, Giselle request that they admit the lies they've told each other over the years.  Jordan agrees and the two place their lies in a jar. On their anniversary, the two read each others lies, and what follows is far from what's expected!

Heat Up Your Summer!

BOSTON & JAMAICA PLAIN, MA: From merengue and salsa to Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, the fifth-annual Tito Puente Latin Music Series promises to heat-up two of Boston's neighborhood public parks in July with danceable rhythms. The series-presented by Berklee College of Music; Villa Victoria Center for the Arts; and ParkARTS-features Berklee faculty, students, and guest artists hailing from various parts of Latin America, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Mexico.

The free music series takes place outdoors in two locations in the city on four Thursday evenings: July 9, 16, 23, and 30. The July 9 concert happens at Mozart Park, 10 Mozart Street, in Jamaica Plain, accessible by the Jackson Square T stop on the orange line. The concerts on July 16, 23, and 30 take place at O'Day Park, next door to Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 West Newton Street, in Boston's South End.

All concerts are from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. For more information, call 617 927-1717, email
aalvear@iba-etc.org, or visit http://berklee.edu/events/summer.   The parks are wheelchair accessible.

This year's program:

July 9 - Orquesta Bacharengue at Mozart Park
July 16 - Javier Arroyo and the Salsa Night Band at O'Day Park
July 23 - Obbini Tumbao at O'Day Park
July 30 - Victor Mendoza at O'Day Park

Now in its 13th year, ParkARTS began as Mayor Thomas M. Menino's initiative to present a yearlong program of arts- and culture-related programs and events in Boston's park system. ParkARTS, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department's multifaceted arts program, incorporates the visual, performing, and participatory arts. The 2009 ParkARTS performing arts program, sponsored by Bank of America, will present concerts in Boston neighborhood parks that range from jazz to symphonic music.
