New Releases

Vanessa David'sOur latest release comes from Vanessa David.  Resolution #9 is a heartwarming story about new families and old traditions.  It is a family-friendly play that's great for First Night celebrations, holiday shows, or everyday Beatles fans.

Nicholas Conti's "Shades of Sylvia"Another release comes from playwright Nicholas Conti and it's called Shades of Sylvia.  In it, Arthur and Anna rent a duplex in New York.  Sadly, their passionate marriage is turning tepid and clouds are appearing fast over their relationship.  Enter Sylvia, a cumulous nimbus, an artist who once lived at the duplex, and has returned to complete a painting left behind when she was evicted. After breaking in, Sylvia is discovered by Anna, who chooses to befriend her. Then comes Ariel, staying a while due to marital difficulties; and Julio, a philanderer; and Cat, an actress/kleptomaniac. Together, they shock, rock and explode in a non-stop plot that twists and turns through love, lust, death and debauchery.

Thomas M. Kelly'sAnother of our latest releases comes from playwright Thomas M. Kelly and is called Extreme Unction!  As part of the rehearsal process, director David holds table talk sessions with a reading of the playwright's notes, and partial readings of the play coupled with a bit of blocking to "flesh-out" the characters and discover the strength of his actors. The actors switch roles through the table talk and blocked readings. During this process he realizes more than he bargained for in the revelation of prejudice, avarice, discrimination, intolerance and bigotry: perfect for the requirements of the playwright, himself. By the end of the play, the group becomes a tightly knit, cohesive assemblage: an ensemble.

Something a bit different herein, we at NEED decided to take a bit of space and feature someone versus something.  That someone is musician Ben Cooley Hall.  Ben grew up in a suburb of Boston, singing and playing violin from an early age. He picked up the guitar in college, after which he moved to Montana and helped form the indie-pop outfit Birdbody Hank, serving on bass. The quartet opened for such noteworthy acts as Band of Susans and the Loud Family. Later, back in Massachusetts, Hall recorded a 3-song demo at Zippah Studios (1999) that helped him recruit Deb Klein to co-found The Mary Reillys: Hall wrote, sang, and played guitar, and Klein sang harmony and played bass and guitar. Keira Flynn-Carson later joined on drums. The Reillys won a small following in the Boston indie circuit, and recorded one EP (Sock Is The New Rock, 2001) and one LP (untitled, not yet released, as the trio has been on an extended hiatus ever since Klein relocated to New York in late 2003.) Ben moved to Providence in 2002, and is based there now. In 2008, he began recording and performing solo. His first solo LP, Owning Up To A Life, was released April 16, 2009. Also in April, Hall began rehearsing and performing with drummer Michael Poorman in selected shows.
