New Releases
From playwright Jim Doyle are two short plays, both of which will have your sides splitting. The first is " Medea-Life-Crisis". The action takes place in Medea Park, a trailer park in Corinth, Texas, on the steps of Medea's Winnebago. Simply put... this is Euripedes' classic play, a la white trash. The second of Doyle's new releases is " Lettuce Spray". It is a hot summer's Sunday and Mrs. Primrose's son, David, has come from New York for a visit. Against his better judgement, he joins her for Mass at his mother's parish. Through clenched teeth, the two bicker back and forth until the two see eye to eye... at least to each other, anyway. Like the sound of these two selections? Don't forget Doyle's other short selections "Love Me or Leash Me" and "Kiss Me Nate" - also available thru JAC.
Next is " The Taste of Medicine," a short/one-act play from David B. Tick, playwright of " New England Home Grown". "The Taste of Medicine" is a story of sexism, power, revenge and dishonesty in a modern day office environment. And most recently released is a new one-act from West Coast playwright Robert Joseph Ahola. Ahola is well known at JAC for his full-length plays " Pavlov's Cats," " Year of the Tiger," " Dr. Max Love" and " High Tea/With His Excellency," as well as his semi-biographical "The Ghost & Josh Gibson". In 1943, when Paul Robeson led an all-star cast of "Othello" (including Uta Hagen and Jose Ferrer), to conclude the longest running Shakespeare ever to grace the Broadway stage, one reviewer from Variety wrote: "No white man will ever be able to play Othello again." In a way it was both prophecy and condemnation. How must the pressure have been for Robeson to be the quintessential 'Othello' after whom no one could reign? " The Last Othello" is a touching and emotional glimpse into the heart, soul and passion of a legendary actor. On the entertainment front, there a couple of great events in process and upcoming we'd like to close this update with. 1) Don't miss the Woburn Repertory Community Theatre production of the Stephen Schwartz/John-Michael Tebelak musical "Godspell," now running thru February 22 at Woburn Memorial High School, 88 Montvale Ave.
2) Come to the "Cabaret," directed by Nancy Curran Willis at Concord Players, running February 13 thru 28 at 51 Walden St. 3) And while you're in Concord, pick up some information about Concord Players' upcoming auditions for Christopher Sergel's adaptation of Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," auditioning February 25 & 26 at 7:00pm. Human tragedy of racial prejudice and unequal justice are brought to life in this poignant drama. It is a much-beloved tale of growing up, as well as an exploration of heroism in the face of bigotry. Directed by JulieAnn Charest Govang, this play includes are large cast including a full African American choir. Visit www.concordplayers.org for more details or call 978-772-2545. |
