Who do you see in the mirror?

"You should put away the old self - and put on the new self - created in God's holiness of truth."  (Ephesians 4: 24)

Put very succinctly, these words from Paul describe the direction and intention of our spiritual journeys.  We are invited to put aside the old self to make way for the new self - the self that is created in God's truth.  But what is the old self and what is the new self?  In this, I would suggest that the new self isn't new at all, but is in fact, our original self.

The original self is the part of us that is created in the image and likeness of God.  It is the part of us that is compassionate, loving, peaceful, content, generous, kind, honest, joyful, enthusiastic, empowered, knowing, humble and wise.  It is the part of us through which God is revealed in our world, the part of us that is God expressing Gods' self.

The old self, on the other hand, is the part of us that comes out of the false perception of separation from God.  It is the ego or the false-self.  This is the part of us that is afraid, greedy, gluttonous, slothful, ignorant, judgmental, desiring of power, vengeful, envious, non-loving and violent.  It is the part of us that blocks the free expression of God's mercy and love and prevents us from being the person we long to be - loving and free.

The invitation this week is to examine ourselves closely.  When we look in the mirror, who do we see?  Do we see our false-self/ego or do we see God's love and light shining through us?  Perhaps a little bit of both.  When looking at the old self, we are then invited to ask the following questions:

  • What steps can we take to set aside the false self so that the original self can shine through?
  • How can we be more open to our original self?
  • What support do we need to be freed of our fears and our attachments so that the original self can more fully emerge?
  • How can we be a source of support for others as they work toward setting aside their old self?

It is in this spirit of honest exploration that we shall find the truth of our original self that shall set us free.  Bring on the truth!
