Your Sacred Heart
copyright 2009 Lauri Lumby Schmidt

In the Catholic Christian tradition, June 19th is the gothicdoorcelebration of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  No matter what our theological or philosophical beliefs, we can look to Jesus of Nazareth as a man who knew his true nature as a being of Divine love who lived that out to its fullest.  While this is true, Jesus also knew the fullness of human love which includes not only peace and joy, but suffering and pain.  Through devotion to the Sacred Heart, we are invited to reflect upon the way in which Jesus brought together the experience of Divine and Human love and how we are invited to do the same.

Divine Love, as Jesus experienced and taught, is consistent, constant, unconditional and freeing.  Human love, as we acutely know, can oftentimes be anything but this.  Because of our own unhealed spiritual wounds, our human love is imperfect and conditional, filled with disappointment, deceit and betrayal.  Grief, rather than joy often marks the experience of human love. Through Jesus' example, we are reminded that in bringing Divine love into the human experience, we can experience the healing transformation of forgiveness, mercy and transcendence.   We need only remember Jesus' words on the cross to see this lived out:

"Father forgive them, they know not what they are doing."  (Luke 23: 34)

As we commemorate the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we are invited into the following meditation:

1)     Reflect on your own sacred heart - a heart that has been broken by disappointment, pierced by betrayal, crowned with suffering and wounded by grief.

2)      Visualize the brilliant flame of Divine love bringing healing, forgiveness and release to those broken places within your own heart.  Imagine this love giving release to those areas of constriction where you have built defenses around your own heart.

3)    Imagine a new heart being born within you, one that is soft, pliable, humble and vulnerable, yet more able to not only accept, but demonstrate the unconditional, joy-filled experience of the Divine love that is your true nature.  Allow yourself to experience the peace and joy of this new heart, healed, whole and crowned in the flame of Divine Love.
