Dear Friends,
Surprise! Most of you know me from the world of business or technology, but I have a creative side that has over the past few years has led me into jewelry design. I finally decided to found my own jewelry design company, and here it is! gdesign. I design matching sets of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings in limited editions featuring many of my own original designs.
Like many others, I started out small, making simple things for myself from ready-made parts, then for friends and family, then charity auctions. But of course, that wasn't enough. I wanted to make one-of-a-kind things. Interesting things. Unusual things. So I started making my own designs for everything, including glass beads. There is something about working with molten glass over a 2000-degree flame that is exhilarating! Whew! And I have designed some pretty funky stuff. Check out my Sticky Icing glass beads, and my Doodlz links that look like the doodles I am constantly drawing.
It was the encouragement from friends and family this past summer that spurred me on to make this a business. It isn't the first time I have designed creative things for sale. I got my start making things and selling them at the tender age of 10...but more about that later! Check out my blog, from the studio, for more info about the inspirations for my designs.
I invite you to browse the jewelry design galleries, jewelry collections, on my website as they have the many examples of the things I have made over the years. My first offerings for sale are the Follow Your Dreams bracelet duo to help you keep those personal commitments, and the Hearts in Motion bracelet duo just in time for Valentine's day.
Since I am totally immersed in the world of jewelry these days, I come across trends and useful tips which I feature in the ...latest trends and tips section of the newsletter. And I have also added a metal and stones section with interesting info about the gemstones and metals I use. I hope you find it interesting...and tell your friends!

There's silver, and then there's silver
Silver jewelry is usually made of sterling silver or fine silver. What's the difference? Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver and .1% germanium or titanium. That is why sterling silver has a somewhat pinkish cast when put next to fine silver and also why sterling silver tarnishes more readily than fine silver.
Pure silver is too soft to use for jewelry. Fine silver is also quite soft but can be used for certain things. That's why you see most jewelry made from sterling since it's stronger. gdesign uses both sterling and fine silver depending on the look desired. The featured bracelet duo, Follow Your Dreams, is made from sterling silver, for strength. The Hearts in Motion bracelet duo is made from fine silver for lustre. Look at the Doodlz link heart earrings.
An example of fine silver can be found in the 2008 Fall/Holiday collection with the Day at the Beach bracelet featured in the banner at the top of this newsletter. The charms are fine silver as are the hammered links. Either way, silver makes a beautiful piece of jewelry.
