How can Chemistry help spur Global
Economic Growth? The
Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) recently
launched an Innovation Strategy in Paris expressing the need for governments to
boost innovation in order to recover from the economic downturn. According to
the strategy, innovation is the key to development, addressing social and global
challenges, and generating employment and productivity. "Private investment may not take place at all in areas such as basic science, where the time horizon is long and outputs are often not immediately marketable. Public investment provides the impetus to innovation, as in the case of the Internet, the browser or the Human Genome Project." Read the OECD report (pdf)...

Laboratory to Licensing: Protecting Your Intellectual Property Along the Way. You may be
working on breakthrough research but do you know how to protect it? Scientific
professionals devote a tremendous amount of time and energy to create valuable
intellectual property; yet, many do not
invest the necessary time to learn what it takes to protect their work.
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in 2009, just under forty
percent of patent applications were granted. Navigating the path from discovery
to market can be complex and tricky.
Learn from our speaker, Tom Steinberg, of Roberts, Mlotkowski, Safran
& Cole, strategies you need to know to protect your life's work.
July 8, 2010 - Chemicals
& the Economy Mid-Year Updates - Impact and Outlook for Executives and
Scientists. Recovery is the
new buzzword but is it here to stay? Would you like to know what indicators to
watch for? The chemical industry is a
well-known leading indicator for the world economy. Yet chemical professionals
are often unaware of this significance. Learn from our speaker, Paul Hodges, of
International eChem, strategies for navigating these uncertain economic
waters. Learn how understanding the
economy and chemical industry trends can help you better plan for your career
and business.
July 15, 2010 - Management or
Scientific Innovations? Building the Right Mix for Successful Financing. Do you know how to spot
if your management team is versed in the art of selling science and commercial
opportunity? Which door should your team be knocking for funding? This and
other important aspects of building a successful company and a top-notch
management team will be addressed. Join our speaker David Porter of Apposite
Capital, a trained chemist and one of 50 most influential people in 2009
according to HealthInvestor, as he shares his decades of experience investing
and advising companies.
July 22, 2010 - Living with
Vertigo: An Entrepreneurial Story in the Chemical Industry. Thomas Jefferson
inspired us with his quote "Nothing can stop the man with the right mental
attitude from achieving his goal..." But,
what does it really take to build a successful company from scratch? What should you know beforehand? Join us to learn tips and strategies from a
chemical entreprenuer who has lived the experience. In 2004 Brian Morin founded Innegrity LLC, a
successful high performance fiber manufacturer focusing on the composites
industry. He will provide a crash course
for scientists on what it takes to build a successful chemical manufacturing
company from scratch.
July 29, 2010 - Government Resources that
Support Sustainable Manufacturing. Would you like to learn about
government programs and resources available to help your company become more
environmentally sustainable, energy efficient and competitive? In addition to lowering energy costs, sustainable
manufacturing practices can help you meet environmental regulations and improve
your company image with customers, suppliers and employees. Our speaker, Morgan
Barr from the Department of Commerce's Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative,
will share with us the benefits, partnership opportunities, and government resources
available for chemically related manufacturers.

Interested in Mentoring? Looking for a Mentor? In order to study
mentor-protégé relationships, researchers at Northwestern University
analyzed 60 years of a "family tree" of mathematics and the doctoral students
they advised. According to ScienceDaily, researchers found that "very
successful academics do a good job mentoring students during the first third of
their careers, but do a poor job during the last third of their careers." So, the follow-up question is are chemists different than mathematicians? Read the report from CPST... |
