The bears... they are awake!
And, they are a wandering! According to David Hoerath, Wildlife Biologist with the Boulder County Parks and Open Space, "the bears may or may not be hungry right away. Some wandering/roaming is common. I think they will be hoping to find critters/carrion that didn't make it through winter (but it was mild and there probably isn't much around or it has already gone bad w/o snow/ice/refrigeration). But they will also be searching for things that are greening up/flowering early."
"It is a wake-up call for mtn/foothills residents to stop feeding birds for the summer (shouldn't do that anyway), put up/take down hummingbird feeders daily, clean/tidy up your compost, and put your trash out the morning of pickup..."
What great advice! Birdfeeders and trash kill bears. Feeding wildlife is never a good idea. Bears who empty our birdfeeder or chow on our trash become aggressive... let's keep the bears wild..and peaceful and shy, shall we?
For great information about living with the bears, see this link.

Wild Earth Day, a huge success!
We wish to thank the community of Nederland for supporting and participating in the 11th annual Wild Earth Day at Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center!

Click on the picture to see a full photo album!
We would love to hear your feedback!
Please click on this link to fill out our survey!
We estimate 1,000 people of all ages and from many places came out to meet hawks, snakes, spiders and worms or enjoyed the workshops about creating an EcoVillage with Lonnie Gamble, an expert in sustainability and someone who hasn't paid an electric or heat bill in 20 years! We enjoyed music with David Williams and education with Leave No Trace, Thorne Ecological Institute and Keep It Clean Partnership. Thank you to Art for the Earth for educating us about fracking and to Ned Fire for coming out to talk about how we can prevent disaster. This was a zero waste event and we thank NedCompost and Green Girl Recycling for making that happen!
Powering the entire Wild Earth tent, Prius plug-in electric vehicle conversions, the Solar Gardens Institute display, and the Nedernet Wi-Fi Hot Spot was a portable solar generator called the Solarator ™ provided by Southard Solar!
We'd like to thank sponsors: the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), My Therapy Company, Seagate Technology, S.L. Gimbel Foundation, Energy Solutions Network, Boulder Hybrid Conversions, Yellow Scene, Wild Mountain Smokehouse, and Backcountry Pizza for making this FREE event happen!
We'd like to thank intern Katie Hyzy and volunteers Greg Ching and Michael McBurnie for serving on the committee to plan and implement this event. We'd like to thank Katrina Harms of Dog House Videos for handling all of the parking for us and Eldora Mountain Resort for providing the cones! The Intuitive Dancing Warrior
A Summer Program for Girls & Boys Ages 10 & Up
Every Wednesday 9am to 3pm, June 6 to August 1
Cost: $60/day
For Young Warriors/Healers/Scholars in the Tribe
Why do Warriors intuitively know where the booby traps are?
It is because they can feel it. It is because they have "dirt time" with primitive skills. They weave their feeling ability and skills together into a seamless web that allows them to live in and feel the forest. These are ordinary skills of extraordinary beings. The beings I speak of are human beings. Bring your human being to camp this summer, to study the ancient ways of the Intuitive Dancing Warrior.

Like the Warrior Sage of old, learn intuitive and primitive skills of:
Communicating in a Language All Nature Knows Through
Dance, Movement, Voice, Sound, Poetry, Storytelling
Fire Making
Finding Water
Building Shelters
Finding Food on the Land
Navigating Aidlessly Across the Landscape
Listening to the Language of Birds
Tracking Patterns of Animals
Crafting Tools Off the Land
Sharpening Your Senses to the Presence of Others in the Forest
Shooting Arrows
Throwing Knives
Playing Scout Games
Learning the Medicine of the Land
Creating Masks and Animal Forms

Mary Margaret Sweeney, PhD has been mentoring children and adults in primitive wilderness skills since 2003. Since 1988 Mary has taught applied and theoretical psychology and education in various colleges and corporations. Her interest in wilderness therapy inspired her to pursue combining these career interests. Mary has a passion for role modeling connection to nature as a path to greater awareness, and for serving others by sharing her knowledge and skills. From the Earth
Clay Workshops for ages 10 and older
Every Thursday June 7- Aug 2 9am-3pm
with Candace Newlove...
Cost: $60/day
Garden Art ~ Thursdays June 7/14/21 Use clay to build your own garden art, imitating the beauty of Colorado's native wildflowers. Hike in the mountains around Nederland and learn to identify local wildflowers and pollinating insects. Use the natural beauty you find as your inspiration for hand-made clay pieces. Learn and practice a variety of clay techniques such as hand-building, glazing, firing and decorating. Create some pieces to take home and place into your own garden at home.
Bird Houses and Habitats ~ Thursdays June 28/July 5 & 12
Are you fascinated by songbirds, raptors or woodpeckers? Observe the nesting habitats of your favorite birds in the wild and then build a bird house or nest of your own using a combination of clay and natural materials. Learn clay techniques such as slab building, glazing, firing and decorating. Visit a local osprey nesting grounds and try to catch a glance of these amazing birds of prey! Take home your bird house to place in your own backyard.
Pit Fire Pottery ~ Thursdays July 19/26 & August 2 Learn to make pottery in the traditional Pueblo fashion. Try your hand at coil building, hand burnishing, and firing in an outdoor pit
fire in the style of Maria Martinez. Connect to the earth through clay, understanding the elements of the earth that create the properties of clay, the importance of building a relationship with the your piece, burnishing it with stones to create a smooth effect, applying slip to create prehistoric designs and placing it carefully into the "pit fire" to return it to the earth. Buried in cow manure and straw, the firing process adds its own story before it is retrieved the next day from the pit.
We are so excited to have Candace Newlove teaching our clay classes! She has been involved in the arts community for many years. Please see her website:
http://www.candacenewlove.com/About_Candace.html to learn about her great work!
