Moose at Mud Lake
Photo by Madison Monty, Wild Bear Education Coordinator

The moose have been spotted frequently this summer in the Nederland area; introduced to northern Colorado in the late 70's, their population seems to have taken off! It's no wonder they love Mud Lake because their favorite food is the Willow plant.  They also enjoy Mountain Mahogany and Aspen.  The Moose can weigh from 800-1,200 pounds!  Moose often birth twins (triplets have also been documented!).  Moose can live up to 20 years in the wild.

Hi, my name is Zoe Anderson and I am a Wild Naturalist at Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center.  I was with my group the other day and I saw a MOOSE at Mud Lake!  We were busy catching crayfish when we heard a snort from behind.  I called in a whisper, "Maddie, the moose!" then all the Wild Bear kids slowly moved out of the area.  We watched the moose for a while and then they left. She studied tree science and has a degree in English with an emphasis on magical realism, which comes in handy during her forays into the world of mushrooms. Wendy studied mycology at Mycobiological Laboratories from 2005-2009 where she cultured and grew 35 strains of medicinal, gourmet, and native mushrooms. She teaches classes and workshops and has presented with Transition Colorado and Bioneers. Summer at Wild Bear...

Children from all over the region joined in to discover the amazing mountain ecosystems through hands-on activities, music, craft and loads and loads of fun.  Lifelong friendships were formed as well as a deep connection to this amazing planet.

nedbugs

Nederbugs became Busy Beavers, studied the crawling and flying creatures and actually found bones when they were paleontologists!!  They are now exploring the magic and mystery of the mountain.  "Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars... and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful" ~Osho.

mountain Rangers

Mountain Rangers grew Green Thumbs, explored the water and land creatures and became stewards at Mud Lake, exploring the forest and the water.  "Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth have reserves of strength that last a lifetime."  Rachel Carson

wild naturalists

Wild Naturalists explored Mountains Rocks and Gold, Crayfish and their Kin the Savage Ways of the Wild and set up camp for the day on Wild Bear's property at Mud Lake.  "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.  Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.  The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves".  ~John Muir

fishing

Our older youth had a blast in Fly Fishing every Tuesday, learning about the life cycles in the water and getting up close and personal with its inhabitants.  "One touch of nature makes the whole world kin."  ~William Shakespeare

We thank our wonderful staff and volunteers who, with their strong positive spirits and devotion to connecting children to the earth, presented a most exceptional summer for all.  Thank you thank you for all of your hard work!

Workshops for schools and other groups

Wild Bear visits classrooms all over the region to educate about the largest group of animals on this planet:  those with jointed legs, and exoskeleton and cold blood!  Believe it or not, we couldn't live without them!  The Arthropod Zoo arrives with a mystery of what is in the bin (inside is a Tarantula, Millipede, Scorpion, Crayfish and Cockroaches).  Through a series of questioning, students discover the amazing Phylum, Arthropoda, those animals with an exoskeleton, cold blood and jointed legs.

This is an excellent program for achieving standards in 2nd grade as well as understanding the largest animal group on our planet, the Arthropods and how we simply would not survive without them!

This is only one example of the excellent programs we provide to schools.   Contact us to schedule a workshop today!    90 minute workshop:  $100

If you'd like to sponsor a program, click here!  and indicate that you are sponsoring an Arthropod Zoo workshop for any group you wish to have us visit!

Wild Bear's Arthropod Zoo is located in the Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center in downtown Nederland!  Please visit our little friends at any time!!
