Does Your Company Execute Well?
Leadership/Strategy
by Rick Wallace |
I spent over 30 years in various leadership and management positions in corporations and mid-sized companies and have had the pleasure over the last few years to work with, study and conduct workshops for hundreds of small business owners. It is due to these experiences that I can, with credibility, say that the biggest issues we all deal with is not the ideas, strategies and "how to". It is the implementation or execution of those Strategies, Tactics or Actions throughout the organization. We all have documented processes for our employees so that we get certain functional things done properly, but how many companies have processes to manage the whole business? It gets back to my discussion of Covey's study of the 23,000 employees across the US. Less than 20% knew what their company's goals were , how they could help or even felt they were empowered to do the things necessary to help achieve the goals. I made the analogy of a soccer team and how it could never win if those same dysfunctions were present. I read a book many years ago by Jim Collins titled "Good to Great", and it was about the key things that separated America's great companies from the good ones. He said you really have to answer yes to just 3 simple questions about your organization to make it
great.
-
Do you have the Right People?
-
Do they know what the Right Things are to be doing?
-
Do they do those Things Right? That is all well and good but what if the answer to any of these questions is no? How do you put in place a process to change for the better and get "yeses" across the board?
