As I look back on the first quarter of 2011 the word "energy" comes to mind as the perfect descriptor. From internal energy for innovation and exploration to creative conservation of our natural resources, these first few months of the year were packed with energizing events and discoveries. What a powerful start to 2011! In this newsletter, we give you snapshots of the recent projects and collaborations, as well as upcoming events, that leave myself and the entire LJS team excited and energized. We look forward to sharing that energy with you!

Innovative Energy Efficiency Collaboration

In partnership with North Star Facilitators, Nanci was invited to provide meeting design and facilitation support for the

Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance's  (NEEA) Regional Marketing Coordinating Council (RMCC). With the goal of accelerating the innovation and adoption of energy-efficient products, services and practices, NEEA is the natural convener for a regional marketing council seeking to engage consumers in energy utility programs to make efficiency the new social norm!

NEEA/RMCC meeting

Nanci and Barb collaborated with Elaine Blatt and Karen Horkitz in meeting design, while Nanci was on-hand to offer "live meeting" facilitation coaching
and also facilitated an action planning process for the Council. The incredibly productive meeting left everyone excited to take the next steps. Elaine shared, "We more than met our objectives for this meeting, and the facilitated sessions really helped bring the group together in ways that continue to help it move forward with its work." Internal capacity-building, effective meeting design; measurable, achievable outcomes and energized participants: mission accomplished!

Taking Facilitation to the Next Level

In partnership with North Star Facilitators, Nanci and Barbara MacKay conducted a facilitation training clinic with grant-making and program staff at

The Lemelson Foundation. Through its mission to improve lives by supporting invention in education, development and application on a global scale, the staff recognized a need for the next level of facilitation skills to better respond to the demands of their complex meeting environments. Lemelson meetingRegularly working across languages, multiple time zones and various countries, both in person and virtually, the staff eagerly integrated both the "tricks of the trade" approach as well as the deeper application of self-awareness tools and self-assessments. Participants had an opportunity to design a meeting with feedback from us as coaches as well as peer feedback in a real-time simulation.

Transformational Latina Leadership, the Next Generation

In late February Nanci, along with LJS Associate Lillian Roybal Rose, welcomed the newest cohort of Executive Leadership Fellows to the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) family. Kicking off the first week of their 9 month fellowship, Nanci and Lillian delivered a dynamic two-day workshop to 22 Latina Leaders from across sectors and across the nation. NHLI circle

As one participant remarked: "Your workshop was the perfect introduction to the leadership program! [It] immediately connected the participants in a deep and meaningful way; introduced the notion of oppression and how it burdens our lives and how our actions, in turn, may burden others; [impressed up on us] how as leaders (or leaders in the making) we must know ourselves; and it opened our hearts and deepened our compassion." These leaders left with the skills and inspiration necessary to embrace their professional and personal lives without limits.

Cross-County Diversity and Inclusion

In March, Nanci was invited by United Way of the Columbia Willamette's Chief Diversity Officer, Maria Rubio, to provide meeting design and facilitation support for the initial gathering of a Regional Diversity and Inclusion Council. The impetus to explore the creation of the council was the need to have a place where representatives from government, corporate and non-profit organizations in the four counties of Clark, Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas could come together to share tools and information. Maria expressed that, "United Way is proud to serve as convener for regional diversity chiefs from all sectors. We hope to provide a think-tank environment to which participants can bring their best thinking, identify best practices, and share strategies on diversity issues affecting our region."
