As you probably know, change is not my favorite thing, but change is not only inevitable but God appears to love change. The Bible contains story after story of God doing new things in the lives of God's people. And Jesus called people to follow him but never appears to have called someone to stay. We often talk about Methodist ministers being itinerant (a fancy word which means to travel from place to place'in this case from church to church), but ALL Christians are called to be on a journey with Jesus. Normally, this does not mean that you are called to physically move, but those who travel with Jesus find that he is constantly calling them to go and do new things and to continue to grow and change.
Our Scripture this week, like last week, comes from the prophet Isaiah:
Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Isaiah 42:1-9
God is in the business of doing new things. What new things do you think God may have in store for you in 2011? What new thing do you think God has planned for New Life?
Saying goodbye is never easy. One of the challenges of being a pastor is leaving people that you love and with whom you have shared so many wonderful memories. I am blessed to have been able to be in ministry with you for the past two and a half years. You will remain in my heart and in my prayers always. But time has come for me to move on. I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday and sharing how much you mean to me. And I know that God has great things in store for New Life as you continue to journey with Jesus with your new pastor, Mike Robinson. Please be praying for him and as you do ask God what new things God might be calling you to do to support Mike and the ministries at New Life.
See you on Sunday!

NEW LIFE SHEPHERD MINISTRY
We need each of you to be praying to find out if God is leading you into the New Life Shepherd Ministry. This ministry will be making calls, visiting and sending cards to members of our church family. Each member of the ministry team will receive a list, of approximately 8 to 10 families, to be responsible for keeping in touch with. If God leads you, please join us for blessings you won't believe!
