Greetings!
This Sunday we begin the season of Advent, a time for preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ. During Advent we not only prepare ourselves to remember the birth of Christ but we are also reminded that as Christians we should prepare ourselves for Christ's return. So on the first Sunday of Advent, our Scripture readings remind us of the promise of Christ's return and our need to be ready. This week's Scripture comes from Paul's letter to the Romans: 11Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:11-14 As you prepare for Christ's coming: - What three things will you commit to doing differently this Advent that will help you to look forward in hope rather than depleting your energy and your bank account?
- What is your deepest hope this Christmas?
- How can you celebrate Christmas in such a way that others will see that you have "put on Christ."
We have a lot of wonderful activities ahead this Advent. Be sure and join us Sunday for the Hanging of the Greens service at 6:30 where our youth will lead us as we explore the stories behind many of your favorite Christmas carols. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, we will have a church-wide pot luck Christmas dinner followed by a Happy Birthday Jesus party for the kids and Charge Conference for the adults. Be sure and check our Advent calendar below and mark your calendars to join us for our special worship services, our Children's musical, and watch for more information about a VERY special fund raiser for our youth. (Speaking of which-don't forget to order you poinsettias this Sunday!)
Also, the holidays are a very difficult time for those who have lost a loved one. Remember to call or send a card to those who are grieving. I especially ask that you remember Wes and Phyllis Paradise in your prayers on the loss of his mother this past week. Also, keep the family of Margaret Payne in your prayers.
Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! And I look forward to seeing you Sunday as we begin anticipating a "Life-Giving Christmas"!
