Greetings!
The King James Version of the Bible constantly uses the refrain "and it came to pass." A friend of mine used to say it was one of the most comforting refrains in the Bible because it reminded him that tough times came to pass not to stay. Of course, the truth is that it also reminds us that all things are pass, the good and the bad. We live in a world defined by changes and we worship a God who majors in changes. After all, this is the God who makes all things new!
We are now approaching a time of change at New Life. For those who weren't able to be with us on Sunday, I need to share that I will be leaving New Life in January. As most of you know, since June I have served both as the pastor of New Life and as the Associate District Superintendent of the Northeast District. It comes to pass that in January, I will move into a full time role as the Associate District Superintendent and a new pastor will be appointed to New Life. I share this with a heavy heart because I love this congregation, but I also share this knowing that God is at work within all these changes.
I realize many of you are unfamiliar with the process of appointing pastors in the United Methodist Church. If you wish to know more, I encourage you to read A Reflection on the Making of Appointments. New Life's Staff/Pastor Parish Committee (SPRC) is working with our District Superintendent to ensure that he is aware of the needs of this congregation as the Bishop and his cabinet prayerfully work toward appointing your next pastor. If you have any questions or input, feel free to contact the members of the committee. They are Melinda Dixon, chair, Rocky Harnen, Charlie Ayers, Jean Cobb, Denise Acker, Rhonda Garner, Judy Franks, Doug Sibley, and Phyllis Paradise. The SPRC will let you know about the new pastor as soon as they can. In the meantime, we all ask for your prayers on behalf of the Bishop and cabinet as they make this appointment.
I will share more personally during the next few months as we prepare to say goodbye. In the meantime, we still have lots of ministry to do! Plus we are entering into one of my favorite times of worship: Advent and Christmas! And I look forward to worshipping with you! This Sunday is our annual Laity Sunday and our Lay Leader, Rocky Harnen, will preach. His Scripture is found in the fourth chapter of Matthew:
18 Walking along the beach of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishing, throwing their nets into the lake. It was their regular work. 19 Jesus said to them, "Come with me. I'll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I'll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass." 20 They didn't ask questions, but simply dropped their nets and followed. Matthew 4:18-20 - Peter and Andrew simply dropped their nets and followed Jesus! What would you be willing to drop everything and risk everything to follow?
- What does it mean to follow Jesus?
- How can we "catch" men and women for Jesus?
- In what ways do you fish for new disciples of Jesus?
- What holds you back?
Have a great Sunday!
