Greetings!
Sunday was a day of both sadness and joy as we said farewell
to our wonderful choir director, Susan Smith and her sons, Chuck and Trey and
welcome two new members. We ended
our traditional service with a prayer of blessing on Susan and Chuck as they
return to South Alabama to begin a new chapter in their lives. I believe that God truly blessed us by
sending Susan to serve in ministry with us during her time in Grant! Please keep Susan and the boys in your
prayers during their transition and send her a card to let her know how much
she has meant to us. Her address is listed below. And how wonderful to begin our 21st year of
ministry by welcoming two new members! Shirley Jenson and Kayla Patterson
joined our church family during the Contemporary service and we had the joy of
praying a blessing on Robert and Kayla's daughter, May. Their addresses are listed below and I
hope you will send them a card and welcome them to our church family! This week, Pastor Melisa will continue our sermon series as
we explore "When Dreams Become Nightmares." And remember each week, you will have the opportunity to go
deeper in the discussion during the Wednesday night Bible Study. This Sunday, I will be on the road to Lake Junaluska, North
Carolina for New District Superintendent Training. For those of you unfamiliar with Lake Junaluska, Junaluska
is the Southeastern Jurisdiction Camp and is located near Ashville. While I'm away, Marvin McCormick,
pastor of Henryville UMC, and Pastor Melisa will be available if you need pastoral
care. But you will also be able to reach me by phone or e-mail as usual. There are many ways to serve others for the Kingdom. Some people, like our praise band and
our choir, serve in ways that everyone can see. Others work behind the scenes in quiet ways. And while you
may not hear him all that often, one of the people at New Life who speaks
volumes to our community is Mike Giles, who selects the sayings that appear on
our sign each week. Each week,
Mike selects a wonderful, short message to share with us and our
community. I have often cringed
when reading signs at other churches but Mike does an excellent job of
selecting inspiring and appropriate messages. This week's message is one of the
best I've seen. It reads:
Church is a gift from
God. Assembly is required!
As we are reminded in the book of Hebrews: Let us not give
up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage
one another. . . . Hebrews 10:25
Have a Blessed Sunday!

New Sermon Series!
Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity
Stress. Anxiety. Fear. These words capture well the state of mind of many of us in America today. We have witnessed dramatic market losses, the collapse of the world's largest insurance company, and many bankruptcies and mergers. Every day seems to bring another piece of economic uncertainty. A 2008 survey found that over three in four Americans are stressed about the economy and their personal finances and I suspect that number has increased since then! Half were worried about providing for their family's basic needs. Over half of respondents reported feeling angry and irritable, and reported lying awake at night worried about this. The report concludes that, "The declining state of the nation's economy is taking a physical and emotional toll on people nationwide."1 Join us in worship the next six weeks for a sermon series entitled Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. Our nation is experiencing what many have described as the "American Nightmare." Increasing consumer debt, declines in savings, lower income growth, and a volatile stock market are all a part of our economic insecurity. We have lived in a society that tells us "you deserve it now," whether or not we can afford it or really even need it. All of us have struggled with these issues at one time or another. They are important issues that we cannot ignore. This is why, over the next six weeks, we will be having a churchwide study and worship emphasis called Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. During this time we will explore what the Bible teaches us about financial management through corporate worship and small group study on Wednesday nights. We'll hear expert advice and stories about what others have learned by working through financial challenges. Each week we will provide you with some practical tools you can use to assess your financial situation and develop a financial plan with a biblical foundation. At the conclusion of the emphasis, we will have the opportunity to make personal commitments of our offerings to God through our church in the coming year. We will consecrate these commitments in the worship service on September 26th. I hope you will join us in the coming weeks as we look at how we can manage our financial resources and truly experience simplicity, generosity, and joy. Schedule of Events: Aug. 22 Faith in the Midst of Financial Crisis Aug. 25 Small-Group Study Begins Aug. 29 When Dreams Become Nightmares Sep. 5 Wisdom and Finance Sep. 12 Cultivating Contentment Sep. 19 Defined by Generosity Sep. 22 Small-Group Study Ends Sep. 27 Consecration Sunday Oct. 10 Celebration Sunday - Results Celebration and Consecration of Next Year's Ministry Commitments 1 "Eight Out of Ten Americans Stressed Because of Economy," by Madison Park, from CNN.com, October 7, 2008; http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/conditions/10/07/economic.stress/index.html.
