Greetings!
Don't forget to keep our youth
mission team in your prayers!
Laura Grace Ayers, William Brown,
Kenneth Paul Dennis, Sydney Garner, Daniel Newton, Morgan Newton, Claudia
Taylor and Cassie Taylor and their chaperones: Rhonda Dennis, Rhonda Garner, and Milanda Taylor
The ancient rabbis used to say that God created humanity
because he liked stories. One
proof of God's love of stories is that God chose to reveal himself to us
through the stories of the Bible. And Jesus' favorite teaching method was storytelling. And throughout the Bible, we are told
to remember important stories because the stories not only teach us who God is,
but the stories also remind us of God's faithfulness even in the most difficult
times. This week's movie is "The
Two Towers," the second movie in the wonderful Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Lord of the Ring movies and novels
remind us of the power of story to shape us and to give us strength and hope
even when we are ready to give up-a very Biblical concept as our scripture this
week reminds us:
12Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let
us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to
Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that
was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his
seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who
endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow
weary or lose heart. 4In your struggle against sin you have not yet
resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have
forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children- "My child, do not
regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished
by him; 6for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises
every child whom he accepts." 7Endure trials for the sake of
discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a
parent does not discipline? 8If you do not have that discipline in
which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. 9Moreover,
we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be
even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10For
they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines
us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. 11Now,
discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it
yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by
it. 12Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak
knees, 13and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame
may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. Hebrews 12:1-13
-
What are the stories that have shaped your life?
-
If you could only share one story about your life with your
children, what would it be?
-
If you could only share one story from the Bible what would
it be?
-
If you could only share one story about Jesus to someone who
does not believe what would it be? And why?
-
In the midst of struggles and temptations, what Biblical
stories do you find strengthen you?
-
When you are trying to discern how to live your life, how to
behave and how to face temptation, what stories do you recall?
- I love the way Eugene Petterson translates verse 3 in The Message: "When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that
story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through.
That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!"
-
In what ways does remembering the
story of Jesus "shoot adrenaline into your soul"?
See you this Sunday as we discuss "The
Story that Really Matters"! Pastor Sherill

June 27th- 4th Sunday Food Drive!
In participation with our 4th Sunday Food Drive, please remember to bring CANNED VEGGIES ON JUNE 27TH! All of these donations will stay in the Grant area to help our local families in need. The "Rising Above" Ministries, formerly "The Fountain", strives not only to bring our local families a full stomach, but also hope and encouragement through friendship and devotions. Sometimes a kind word or good deed means just as much as a meal, and we have several folks in our congregation that do this so well: Bob and Nell Barker, Jack and Jean Wilkie, Wes and Phyllis Paradise and COUNTLESS others! We are very thankful for all that you do, and know that the message that you bring to local families is priceless. |

Annual Conference Report - 2010
The 2010 North Alabama Conference opened on the morning of June 4, 2010, at ClearBranch United Methodist Church. One important thing you should know: Pastor Sherill was appointed as pastor of New Life for another year! The North Alabama Conference focuses on one of five priorities each year.
This year the focus was Effective Leadership.
Here are some highlights from Friday and Saturday:
·To kick off the day on Friday, Rev. Marcus Singleton challenged the Conference asking "Has all of God been invited into the Church?" He said, "Effective leadership is not enough. ... If we expect God to transform our church we have to broaden the invitation." He concluded, "Until we are able to testify about what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives we will continue to get what we got."
·Using 21st century technology, missionary John Funk opened the Friday afternoon session with prayer via Skype. He and his wife Suzanne are missionaries from North Alabama serving in Bolivia.
·Some of you may remember that last year at this same time Sumatanga was near bankruptycy. Chair of the Sumatanga Trustees Mike Byrne announced that Sumatanga is now debt free. He also announced that reservations and usage of the facility are up.
·11 new deacons and elders in full connection were ordained.
·27 new local pastors received their license.
·Saturday was dedicated to the Conference theme "Effective Leadership" and featured guest teacher Rev. Adam Hamilton of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. Rev. Hamilton started this church in 1990 when he was 25 years old and it is now the largest The United Methodist Church with over 12,000 adult members and an average weekly worship attendance of over 7,500.
·During the three teaching sessions he focused on three Qualities of Leaders People Will Follow: Effective Leadership; Effective Worship and Preaching; and Evangelism. Rev. Hamilton talked about how many of our churches are left with an older generation, and in order to have our churches continue and thrive in the future we will need to "Change, innovate, improve or die." Some thought-provoking questions he encouraged us to think about were: Why do people need Jesus? Why do people need the Church? and Why do people need your particular church? I am sad that more of our congregation did not have the opportunity to hear his preaching. I recommend his book, "Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White" for more details on his teaching.
You may not know this but Annual Conference is open to everyone! Next year's annual conference will be in Madison, Alabama at Asbury UMC. Hopefully, more people from our church will be able to attend with this closer, more convenient location.
