Greetings!
This
week, we begin a new summer sermon series: Summer at the Movies.
Each week, we'll see a scene of two from a popular movie and discuss the
Biblical lessons we can learn from them.
This week we'll learn a lesson or two from The Incredibles. The Incredibles is the story of a
family with superpowers. For years
they were forced to deny their powers and attempt to live as "normal" people
but they eventually discover that denying their gifts results in conflict and dissatisfaction. In the process, they also learn the
importance of family and friends. Our
Scripture lesson for this week comes from the gospel of Luke:
4"I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the
body, and after that can do nothing more. 5But I will warn you whom
to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.
Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6Are not five sparrows sold for two
pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. 7But even
the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value
than many sparrows. 8"And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me
before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God; 9but
whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. 10And
everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever
blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11When they
bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry
about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say; 12for
the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say." Luke 12:4-12
-
In a moment of danger, Alastair
tells her children: "Your identity is
your most valuable possession. Protect it. And if anything goes wrong, use your powers." How does this passage speak to our identity? What powers are we given?
How are we called to use them?
- When the daughter, Violet,
apologizes for at first not using her powers and then for not being able to use
her powers to save them. Her mother says: "It isn't your fault. It wasn't fair for me
to suddenly ask so much of you. But things are different now. And doubt is a luxury we can't afford anymore, sweetie. You have more power than you realize. Don't think. And don't worry. If the time comes, you'll know what to do. It's in your
blood." In what ways do we not use the powers that are given us? What gifts has God given you that you do not exercise? What is the
danger in not using the gifts God gives us?
Don't forget to keep our
youth mission trip in your prayers as they working in the June heat painting
homes for the elderly and disabled in inner-city Birmingham! The youth mission team is: Laura Grace Ayers, CJ Brown, William Brown, Kenneth Paul Dennis, Sydney Garner, Daniel Newton, Morgan Newton, and Cassie Taylor. Chaperones are: Rhonda Dennis, Rhonda Garner and Milanda Taylor. See you Sunday and be sure
and invite a friend without a church home to join us! Pastor Sherill

"Rising Above" - New Life UMC Monthly Food Drive
New Life United Methodist Church is joining with First Baptist of Grant in support of "Rising Above". For those who may have missed Thames Robinson's excellent article in The Advertiser Gleam, "Rising Above" distributes food and attempts to provide other help to individuals and families in need who live in the Grant area. This is done every Wednesday morning from the little red church across from Hardees. Bags of food are distributed to local individuals with demonstrated need. The 50 or so individual bags of food are free to clients, but of course are not really free. Even free food from the Alabama and USDA Food Banks carries a transportation service charge. Local businesses and individuals provide much, but additional help is always needed. If you hear of a food donation box or a rail offering to purchase "free" food, every bit of it will stay in the Grant Area and will go to our neighbors in serious need of help.
We will hold a monthly food drive on the
4th Sunday of every month.
Please note the food schedule below
so you will know what to bring! June - Canned Veggies July - Pasta (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, etc.) August - Canned Soup or Sauces September - Jams, Jellies, Syrups October - Canned Stew, Chili, Spam |

NLCA Informational Meeting Sunday, June 20th 10:15 am in the Fellowship Hall
Due to declining enrollment in the Christian Academy, the Academy will be downsizing to concentrate on ministry to children between the ages of 2 and 5. This means that our nursery and after school ministries will be discontinued. This change will allow us to respond to the economic realities of the situation while also allowing the Academy to focus resources and time on educating pre-schoolers in a Christian environment. Unfortunately, this will also mean a decrease in the staff at the Academy.
On Sunday, NLCA Director Jami Schrimsher, along with the NLCA Board will hold an informational meeting about the upcoming changes. If you have questions or concerns you are invited to attend.
