Greetings!
The theme for this year's Annual Conference was "Equipped"
and the focus was on effective ministry in the 21st Century. And what a wonderful way for New Life
to begin yet another conference year but with a service recognizing and
celebrating our teachers. Thank
you yet again to all who teach at New Life and thanks to Thames Robinson and
everyone who helped her plan our appreciation luncheon.
I also want to congratulate Katherine Saylor, Hannah Beth Ayers and Claudia
Taylor for memorizing all the books of the Bible in order! What a wonderful achievement and now
they will never get lost when having to find the sermon scripture from the book
of Habakkuk!
I also want to welcome again our new Children's Director,
Rev. Melisa Saccucci. We are blessed to have her join us in ministry and if you
didn't get a chance to meet her Sunday, I hope you will meet her on Wednesday! This Sunday, we are celebrating yet another powerful
ministry. This Sunday is United
Methodist Women (UMW) Sunday. The
UMW and its predecessor organization are responsible for keeping the passion
for missions alive in the Methodist Church. This Sunday, we are fortunate to welcome Carol Toney, the
president of the Northeast District United Methodist Women, as our
preacher. Everyone will be
blessed by her message and I pray that the Holy Spirit will work through her
speaking and teaching to continue to fan a passion within us to engage our
community and our world.
Speaking of passion for engaging our community. I want to thank everyone who
gave so generously to our communion rail offering for the Fountain Food
Ministry. Thanks to your
willingness to open your heart and your wallets, we raised over $1000 to help
feed the poor in our community. We'll hopefully have an update on that ministry in the near future.
Also, please note our financial update in this
newsletter. In the future, we plan
to provide an update on estimated giving and actual giving. As you can see, we
are behind thus far this year. Don't forget that the costs of ministry don't take a vacation in the
summer months. We need your support more than ever as we prepare for our youth
to go on their first mission trip and we continue to worship God and teach his
word! Our Scripture this Sunday comes from the opening of the book
of Acts:
In the first
book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the
beginning 2until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after
giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
3After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many
convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the
kingdom of God. 4While staying with them, he ordered them not to
leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he
said, "is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with
water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
6So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the
time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7He replied, "It
is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own
authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come
upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:1-8
-
What does Jesus' final promise mean to you?
-
What does it mean to be a witness of Jesus
Christ?
-
How do you know when the Holy Spirit is at work in
your life?
-
How might God be calling you to witness to your
faith?
I look forward to worshipping with you and Carol on Sunday! Pastor Sherill |

"Rising Above" - New Life UMC Monthly Food Drive
New Life United Methodist Church is joining with First Baptist of Grant in support of "Rising Above". For those who may have missed Thames Robinson's excellent article in The Advertiser Gleam, "Rising Above" distributes food and attempts to provide other help to individuals and families in need who live in the Grant area. This is done every Wednesday morning from the little red church across from Hardees. Bags of food are distributed to local individuals with demonstrated need. The 50 or so individual bags of food are free to clients, but of course are not really free. Even free food from the Alabama and USDA Food Banks carries a transportation service charge. Local businesses and individuals provide much, but additional help is always needed. If you hear of a food donation box or a rail offering to purchase "free" food, every bit of it will stay in the Grant Area and will go to our neighbors in serious need of help.
We will hold a monthly food drive on the
4th Sunday of every month.
Please note the food schedule below
so you will know what to bring! June - Canned Veggies July - Pasta (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, etc.) August - Canned Soup or Sauces September - Jams, Jellies, Syrups October - Canned Stew, Chili, Spam |
May 2010 Financial Updateas of May 31 Budgeted Giving $ 90,261 Actual Giving $81,600
