Greetings!
We have a big week ahead of us! Please keep the North Alabama Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in your prayers as we meet this week. Remember you are always welcome to come observe the work of the Conference and everyone is invited to join us on Saturday to hear the teaching of Adam Hamilton. Milanda Taylor is our lay member of annual conference and she will give you a report on Conference in the weeks to come.
This Sunday we will also have our Promotion Sunday with our children and youth moving up to their new classes! During worship, we will recognize and bless our Christian education teachers and then thank them with a luncheon following the Contemporary Service. In addition, our new children's pastor, Melisa Saccucci, will be with us in worship for the first time. Be sure to greet her! Finally, I want to share some wonderful news with you. As most of you know we have been involved in the Natural Church Development (NCD) process since October 2008. NCD is a process of assessing and working on church health. You can learn more about NCD here. In our first survey, we identified Gift-Based ministry as the area we most needed to improve and we also identified the need for a vision statement for our congregation. As part of the process, the NCD Church Heath team has been working hard to address our growing edges as a congregation. Last month, a number of you participated in our second NCD survey and I am happy to share that our scores have increased significantly with improvements in all areas! What's more, Gift-Based Ministry is now our strongest factor! We will share more with you in the months to come including plans to address our newest minimum factor, Holistic Small Groups. But for today I want to celebrate the hard work of the NCD Health team and of this congregation! This week, we'll reflect on an Old Testament story so important that Jesus referred to it several times during his ministry:
8Then the word of the Lord came to [Elijah], saying, 9"Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you." 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." 12But she said, "As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." 13Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth." 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah. I Kings 17:8-16
- If you had only enough oil and meal for a final meal for your family, how likely would you be to share it with a total stranger?
- What do you think motivated this foreign woman to respond to Elijah's request?
- What are you most afraid of? What are the places in your life where you feel you are lacking?
- Have you ever had a real need, such as the widow's, for the basics of life-food, water, clothing? How did God comfort and provide for you in your need?
I look forward to worshiping with you on Sunday!Pastor Sherill |

"The Fountain" - New Life UMC Monthly Food Drive
New Life United Methodist Church is joining with First Baptist of Grant in support of "The Fountain". For those who may have missed Thames Robinson's excellent article in The Advertiser Gleam, the Fountain distributes food and attempts to provide other help to individuals and families in need who live in the Grant area. This is done every Wednesday morning from the little red church across from Hardees. Bags of food are distributed to local individuals with demonstrated need. The 50 or so individual bags of food are free to clients, but of course are not really free. Even free food from the Alabama and USDA Food Banks carries a transportation service charge. Local businesses and individuals provide much, but additional help is always needed. If you hear of a food donation box or a rail offering to purchase "free" food, every bit of it will stay in the Grant Area and will go to our neighbors in serious need of help.
We will hold a monthly food drive on the
4th Sunday of every month.
Please note the food schedule below
so you will know what to bring! June - Canned Veggies July - Pasta (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, etc.) August - Canned Soup or Sauces September - Jams, Jellies, Syrups October - Canned Stew, Chili, Spam |
