Greetings!
What a great time we had last
Sunday! Thanks to Thames Robinson
and all who made our Mothers' Day Hat Day a success! Over $170 was raised for
the youth. The women looked great
in the hats (and so did Rocky Harnen!) and we all had fun commenting on
them. Thames is already working on
another fun(d) raiser for Fathers' Day, so watch for details!
The PrimerTimers' Founders' Day
Yard Sale was also a success!
Thanks to the hard work of the Primetimers' and your donations and
purchases, the raised over $1700 which will be used to update the Youth Center
(House on the Corner). Our Praise
Band, Water's Edge, has also adopted a room to renovate, so we are well on our
way to seeing a major improvement in that building for our youth. The Trustees are looking for other
individuals or groups to "adopt" a room in the Youth Center and if you or your
group would like to do so please let me or Bryce Click, chair of Trustees,
know!
This week, we conclude our
series on "Witnesses to the Resurrection" as we hear the story of Paul and
Lydia, the first European convert to Christianity:
9During
the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him
and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." 10When he had seen
the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced
that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. 11We set
sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to
Neapolis, 12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of
the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some
days. 13On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river,
where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the
women who had gathered there. 14A certain woman named Lydia, a
worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a
dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was
said by Paul. 15When she and her household were baptized, she urged
us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at
my home." And she prevailed upon us. Acts 16:9-15
·
Have you ever had a vision from God? What was it like? Did it confirm something for you or
challenge you to do something different?
·
Paul usually began his ministry at the
synagogue. Apparently, Philippi
did not have a synagogue so Paul went looking for a "place of prayer." Outside the gates of the city, he
found a group of women gathered
(and one would assume praying) and among them a rich Gentile woman who like
Cornelius was a God-fearer but not a Jew.
In Grant, where might we find people gathered who might be searching for
answers outside of the church?
·
How did Lydia respond to the message of the
gospel? How should we?
See you on Sunday!

"The Fountain" - New Life UMC Monthly Food Drive
New Life United Methodist Church is joining with First Baptist of Grant in support of "The Fountain". For those who may have missed Thames Robinson's excellent article in The Advertiser Gleam, the Fountain distributes food and attempts to provide other help to individuals and families in need who live in the Grant area. This is done every Wednesday morning from the little red church across from Hardees. Bags of food are distributed to local individuals with demonstrated need. The 50 or so individual bags of food are free to clients, but of course are not really free. Even free food from the Alabama and USDA Food Banks carries a transportation service charge. Local businesses and individuals provide much, but additional help is always needed. If you hear of a food donation box or a rail offering to purchase "free" food, every bit of it will stay in the Grant Area and will go to our neighbors in serious need of help.
We will hold a monthly food drive on the
4th Sunday of every month.
Please note the food schedule below
so you will know what to bring! May - Canned Fruit June - Canned Veggies July - Pasta (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, etc.) August - Canned Soup or Sauces September - Jams, Jellies, Syrups October - Canned Stew, Chili, Spam |

Send More People from Your Church to Annual Conference to be Equipped for More Effective Leadership
Rev. Adam Hamilton, pastor of Kansas City's United Methodist Church of the Resurrection is the guest speaker on Saturday, June 5 for Annual Conference 2010
by Rev. Dale Cohen, Director of Connectional Ministries
Churches are normally represented at Annual Conference with a Lay Member and their Clergy Person; however this year on Saturday, June 5, 2010, we're inviting you to "expand" your church's participation by sending additional leaders to hear Rev. Adam Hamilton of Kansas City's United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Hamilton is not only leading United Methodism's fastest growing and largest church; he is leading the entire denomination in renewal as he echoes John Wesley's call to be involved in both evangelism and social justice that transforms lives and transforms communities.
Church of the Resurrection is solidly United Methodist and is committed to the opportunities that being a part of the connection can provide. Indeed, Rev. Hamilton and others on staff at Church of the Resurrection are producing resources for use in their church and making them available to the larger denomination. These resources are some of the best resources being produced anywhere in all of Christian publishing. We will have many of these resources available for you to review in the Cokesbury Book store at Annual Conference.
Adam Hamilton will be teaching at three different times throughout the day on Saturday, June 5. The sessions will be at 9 am, 10:45 am, and 1:30 pm and he will be focusing on leadership that produces growth in God's church. That's why it's important for each church to bring additional leaders to hear what Adam has to say. We are asking every church to bring a minimum of one additional leader, but hopefully more to learn from Rev. Hamilton more about evangelism and church health.
Additional participants from your church should register at the annual conference registration page <http://www.northalabamaumc.org/pages/detail/1495> on the conference website as a "visitor" and order lunch so we can have an adequate supply of food and so we can provide additional space for the sessions if needed.
In August, the Conference Evangelism Team will sponsor several meetings in various places in the conference to discuss Adam Hamilton's ideas and other ideas for church growth and health, as well as other appropriate tools for reaching new people for Christ.
The entire Church of the Resurrection Congregation in Kansas City is praying for our time with their pastor. Every church and pastor of the North Alabama Conference is being prayed for by name in preparation for what God is going to do through this event that is designed to equip us to be more leaders in the Kingdom of God. Your church and your pastor are being prayed for by at least ten to twelve members of Rev. Hamilton's church every day because they want to see the United Methodist Church in North Alabama growing again.
The Annual Conference registration deadline is May 19. Please register early so we can be the best possible hosts for this transforming event.
