Greetings!

A great big thanks to Milanda Taylor, Chellee Bailey, Wendy Self and Heather Saint for all their work to pull together last week's worship.  Thanks also to the children and youth who shared their tremendous gifts and to their parents who got them to all their practices as well as to church last Sunday!  We are truly blessed! And we look forward to having them participate in worship again very soon!

I apologize for the confusion about the offering for the Simpson family.  The communion rail offering this week will be used to help them as they recover from the tornado.  Please keep those affected in your prayers as well as those affected by the floods in Tennessee and those threatened by the oil spill in the Gulf!

This week we will celebrate Holy Communion and continue hearing from the witnesses to resurrection.  This week's voice belongs to Peter as he finds that being a witness to resurrection requires him to die to old ideas in order to allow others to experience the good news of new life.

Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. 2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, 3saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" 4Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, 5"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. 6As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' 8But I replied, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' 9But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' 10This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. 11At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. 12The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. 13He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; 14he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' 15And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" 18When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."  Acts 11:1-18

·      Are there any categories of people you are tempted to exclude as "impure"?

·      What is more important to a Christian: compassion or purity?

·      Can you think of modern day equivalents to Peter's encounter with Cornelius?

See you on Sunday!

 NEW LIFE SHEPHERD MINISTRY

In March 2010, we will begin our Shepherd Ministry with zeal.

We need each of you to be praying to find out if God is leading you into this ministry.

The Shepherd Ministry will be making phone calls, visiting, and sending cards to members of our church family.

Each member will receive a list of approximately 8 to 10 families for which you will be responsible for keeping in touch with calls, visits, and/or sending cards.

If God leads, please join us for blessings you won't believe.

Send More People from Your Church to Annual Conference to be Equipped for More Effective Leadership

Rev. Adam Hamilton,
pastor of Kansas City's United Methodist Church of the Resurrection is the guest speaker on Saturday, June 5 for Annual Conference 2010

by Rev. Dale Cohen, Director of Connectional Ministires

Churches are normally represented at Annual Conference with a Lay Member and their Clergy Person; however this year on Saturday, June 5, 2010, we're inviting you to "expand" your church's participation by sending additional leaders to hear Rev. Adam Hamilton of Kansas City's United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Hamilton is not only leading United Methodism's fastest growing and largest church; he is leading the entire denomination in renewal as he echoes John Wesley's call to be involved in both evangelism and social justice that transforms lives and transforms communities.

Church of the Resurrection is solidly United Methodist and is committed to the opportunities that being a part of the connection can provide. Indeed, Rev. Hamilton and others on staff at Church of the Resurrection are producing resources for use in their church and making them available to the larger denomination. These resources are some of the best resources being produced anywhere in all of Christian publishing. We will have many of these resources available for you to review in the Cokesbury Book store at Annual Conference.

Adam Hamilton will be teaching at three different times throughout the day on Saturday, June 5. The sessions will be at 9 am, 10:45 am, and 1:30 pm and he will be focusing on leadership that produces growth in God's church. That's why it's important for each church to bring additional leaders to hear what Adam has to say. We are asking every church to bring a minimum of one additional leader, but hopefully more to learn from Rev. Hamilton more about evangelism and church health.

Additional participants from your church should register at the annual conference registration page
<http://www.northalabamaumc.org/pages/detail/1495>
on the conference website as a "visitor" and order lunch so we can have an adequate supply of food and so we can provide additional space for the sessions if needed.

In August, the Conference Evangelism Team will sponsor several meetings in various places in the conference to discuss Adam Hamilton's ideas and other ideas for church growth and health, as well as other appropriate tools for reaching new people for Christ.

The entire Church of the Resurrection Congregation in Kansas City is praying for our time with their pastor. Every church and pastor of the North Alabama Conference is being prayed for by name in preparation for what God is going to do through this event that is designed to equip us to be more leaders in the Kingdom of God. Your church and your pastor are being prayed for by at least ten to twelve members of Rev. Hamilton's church every day because they want to see the United Methodist Church in North Alabama growing again.

The Annual Conference registration deadline is May 19. Please register early so we can be the best possible hosts for this transforming event.

"The Fountain" - New Life UMC Monthly Food Drive
New Life United Methodist Church is joining with First Baptist of Grant in support of "The Fountain". For those who may have missed Thames Robinson's excellent article in The Advertiser Gleam, the Fountain distributes food and attempts to provide other help to individuals and families in need who live in the Grant area. This is done every Wednesday morning from the little red church across from Hardees. Bags of food are distributed to local individuals with demonstrated need. The 50 or so individual bags of food are free to clients, but of course are not really free. Even free food from the Alabama and USDA Food Banks carries a transportation service charge. Local businesses and individuals provide much, but additional help is always needed. If you hear of a food donation box or a rail offering to purchase "free" food, every bit of it will stay in the Grant Area and will go to our neighbors in serious need of help.

We will hold a monthly food drive on the
 4th Sunday of every month.
Please note the food schedule below
so you will know what to bring!

May - Canned Fruit
June - Canned Veggies
July - Pasta (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, etc.)
August - Canned Soup or Sauces
September - Jams, Jellies, Syrups
October - Canned Stew, Chili, Spam
