Greetings!

This week's scripture is the story of Jesus' last visit home to Nazareth.  Jesus has recently been baptized and then spent 40 days being tempted by Satan in the wilderness.  Now, he returns home and begins his ministry.  At first, he is received eagerly, but soon things will turn ugly.

14Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."  Luke 4:14-21

·         In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey encourages people to write a mission statement to help them as they decide their priorities.  This passage contains Jesus' mission statement.  What does Jesus believe the Spirit of the Lord has anointed him to do?

·         Have you ever felt "filled with the power of the Holy Spirit"?  How did that feel?  What did that power enable you to do?

·         At first, Jesus is praised by the crowds.  How do you think Jesus felt about their praise?

o   If we continue reading this chapter, we discover that their praise quickly turned to condemnation.  How do you think Jesus felt about the crowd turning on him and attempting to kill him?

o   What-if anything-does this passage say to Christians about their lives in the world?

§  How often do you do something for the sake of being praised?

§  How willing would you be to do something that would anger those around you?

·         Notice that it was Jesus "custom" to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.  What does that tell us about the importance of weekly worship?  Is it your custom?

Just a few thoughts as we prepare for Sunday!

Haiti Health Kits

On Sunday, January 24th at New Life, I would like to invite all ages to join us during the Sunday School hour for a time of fellowship, prayer and service.

I am asking each family to bring a simple breakfast item (donuts, juice, fruit, etc) as well as items for health kits for Haiti (look below for the items we need). We will eat together, pray for the people of Haiti, and we will assemble as many health kits as we can.

I will need a few helpers to set up and take down tables. And a few to set up the table for the food and clean up afterwards. If you can help, please let me know.

I hope you will join us!

Pastor Sherill

2010 CONFIRMATION CLASS

Grade 6th and Up

Each year, an opportunity is given for our young people to spend some time studying what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of Christ's body, the Church. At the end of this special time of studying, questioning, and exploring, youth are given the opportunity to make a profession or reaffirmation of their faith. This year, we will attend the Confirmation Retreat at Camp Sumatanga on January 29th and 30th and classes will begin in early February and those in the Confirmation Class who choose to affirm their faith will be received into membership of the Church on April 11th. If you would like (6th grade and up) to be involved in this class, please let me know so I can begin planning. If you have any questions about confirmation and what it means, please feel free to e-mail me. Last chance!  Please let me know!.

Please begin to keep our 2010 Confirmation Class in your prayers.

Short-Term Disciple Bible Study:  Invitation to Romans

Beginning Wednesday, January 27 at 6:45 p.m., we will begin a nine week study of the book of Romans.  If you are familiar with the Disciple Bible study, this study will follow a similar format with suggested short daily readings.  If you plan to participate in this study, please let Pastor Sherill know (by responding to this e-mail or calling the church office) by January 24th so she can order the books.  Suggested donation for the book is $10.

Severe Weather Plan

Last year, we had snow on Sunday morning and a tornado shortly before our Good Friday services. Hopefully 2010 will be less eventful!  However, in case of severe weather, we will let you know if services are being cancelled in the following ways:

·         The church voice mail

·         The church website

·         Channel 48 news

Thank you to the church:

Thank you  for your prayers, thoughts, and offers of help in our time of bereavement due to the loss of our Mother, Dorthy Gamble.
