Greetings!

Hope your holidays were blessed for everyone and I hope 2010 will be a great new year!  I am very excited about what I believe God has in store for New Life in the coming year as we begin to live out the vision God has given us!

Beginning January 11th through the 22nd, I will be in Atlanta during the week as I continue my doctorate studies.  I will be home that weekend and will be present in worship with you.   If you need me, you can reach me at my cell or by e-mail while I am away.  Our secretary, Shawna, and our lay leader, Rocky Harnen, also know how to reach me as well as the pastor on call for me in case of any emergencies.

This Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of Epiphany also known as the Baptism of the Lord Sunday, so we will focus on the meaning of baptism in the life of a Christian.  Our scripture this week comes from the book of Acts. As a result of persecution, Philip fled to Samaria where he continued to preach the gospel to very responsive Samaritans.

14Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16(for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.  Acts 8:14-17

·         This is one of many descriptions of baptism within the book of Acts-each of which is unique. Some receive the Holy Spirit prior to baptism (Acts 10:44-48), some at baptism (Acts 2:37-38) and in this case after baptism.  Given all these passages, what can we learn about the connection between baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit?

·         What do you think was the problem with being baptized only in the name of Jesus?

o   What did Peter and John do to fix the problem?

·         Why do you think baptism is such an important event in the life of a Christian?

o   If you are baptized, what does your baptism mean to you?

o   If you are not baptized, have you ever considered baptism? Is so, why have you chosen to remain unbaptized?  If not, why not?

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Pastor Sherill

OUTREACH MINISTRIES

As you know, our vision statement contains a commitment to engage our community.  This is nothing new to New Life. I am happy to say that outreach is a vital part of our ministries!  Through ministries such as our Outreach Center on Main Street which provides clothing to those in need, our Thanksgiving Basket and Christmas Stars on the Mountain programs, trash pick-up ministries, as well as individuals involved in SOFAR (Spiritual Outreach For Addiction Recovery), Celebrate Recovery and Kairos.

Beginning this week, I have been asked to report to the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church the number of people involved in outreach ministries each week as well as the number of people impacted by those ministries.

We already track the numbers of people served at the Outreach Center and I am asking those who lead other outreach ministries to let me know their numbers.   But I know that many of you are involved in other outreach ministries and I need your help.  When you participate in outreach (Such as SOFAR, KAIROS, and mission events), can you let me know so we can count your participation. And if you know how many people are served by that ministry I would appreciate that number.

I think it is wonderful that part of how the conference determines our effectiveness as a congregation is by how well we reach out to others.  I do, however, realize that reporting numbers is a headache.  But I would appreciate your support in this matter!

Most importantly, thank you for engaging our community and changing lives!

2010 CONFIRMATION CLASS

Grade 6th and Up

Each year, an opportunity is given for our young people to spend some time studying what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of Christ's body, the Church. At the end of this special time of studying, questioning, and exploring, youth are given the opportunity to make a profession or reaffirmation of their faith. This year, we will attend the Confirmation Retreat at Camp Sumatanga on January 29th and 30th and classes will begin in early February and those in the Confirmation Class who choose to affirm their faith will be received into membership of the Church on April 11th. If you would like (6th grade and up) to be involved in this class, please let me know so I can begin planning. If you have any questions about confirmation and what it means, please feel free to e-mail me. Registration for the class will end on January 17th.

Please begin to keep our 2010 Confirmation Class in your prayers.

Wednesday Night Adult Bible Study

Short-Term Disciple Bible Study:  Invitation to Romans

Beginning Wednesday, January 27 at 6:45 p.m., we will begin a nine week study of the book of Romans.  If you are familiar with the Disciple Bible study, this study will follow a similar format with suggested short daily readings.  If you plan to participate in this study, please let Pastor Sherill know (by responding to this e-mail or calling the church office) by January 24th so she can order the books.  Suggested donation for the book is $10.

Severe Weather Plan

Last year, we had snow on Sunday morning and a tornado shortly before our Good Friday services. Hopefully 2010 will be less eventful!  However, in case of severe weather, we will let you know if services are being cancelled in the following ways:

·         The church voice mail

·         The church website

·         Channel 48 news

To the Church from the Atkinson Family:

Thank you guys for all the help this Christmas. My kids were very happy with what all you got for them. Thank you so much!
