Charge Conference

This Sunday
3 p.m at Asbury UMC in Madison

Join us for this district wide celebration!

Greetings!

This week's scripture is found near the end of Jesus' ministry.  This is part of what is often called "The Little Apocalypse" because it contains imagery and themes more familiar to the apocalyptic writing of the books of Daniel and Revelation.   The word "apocalypse" means "To reveal or uncover," but most apocalyptic writing seems more confusing than revealing.  Here as in many other places, Jesus is asked a question and answers in a way that confounds his listeners.

As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" 2Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down."
3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4"Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" 5Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
9"As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. 10And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 13and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Mark 13:1-13
  •   As you read this scripture, do you hear good news or bad news?  Can you imagine someone else hearing this scripture differently than you do?  Why or why not?
  • Jesus warns of those who might lead us astray.  The word translated "astray" can also mean lead us "off the path."  How might wars, rumors of wars, hurricanes and such lead us "off the path"?  And given Jesus' words in this scripture, what should our path be?
  • This is one of those scriptures that women can understand more than men.  If you are a woman who has given birth, think back over your labor. Did you have any idea when it would occur? Did you have any control?  How did you endure the waiting?  What kept you from despair as you felt the pain of labor (and no epidurals don't count!)?
o   For those who have never had this experience, talk to someone who has.
  • Why do you think this Scripture is read so close to the Advent season?
See you on Sunday!

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS

ART AND CRAFTS SUPPLIES NEEDED.  Children's ministry is in need of arts and crafts supplies.  This may be a good time to clean out that closet.  We can use just about anything for art projects. (artificial flowers, beads, crayons, paper, stickers, rubber stamps, etc)

CHILDREN'S BULLETINS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. These bulletins are biblically based, puzzles and games to reinforce each week's sermon. Which will actively involve children in worship. Available in the Narthex for ages 3-7 and 8-12.
Thanksgiving & Christmas Charities

New Life Church is making Thanksgiving baskets for the needy and will coordinate the Christmas on the Mountain again this year. If you know anyone who could benefit from either of these programs, please have them fill out an application. The applications for these programs are on the secretary's desk in the file folder titled "Out Reach Applications". You may turn in your completed applications to the church secretary or to Doris Wood (582-1341) or Sherry Sutphin (558-7315).

   YOUTH ANNOUNCEMENTS:

YOUTH FUNDRAISING: For all youth fundraising events, youth will earn "points" based on their participation in fundraisers. Additionally, adults who volunteer to chair a fundraising event will receive "points" for the youth of their choice. Each point will be worth money towards youth retreats. Adults who want to chair a fundraiser, contact Milanda.

BEHOLD YOUTH RETREAT: We have 28 youth registered to attend BEHOLD, January 16-18th at Camp Sumatanga. Remaining balance per person is $100 and is due to Milanda by December 27th.

PUPPET TEAM
On September 26th some of the youth attended a puppet workshop at Flint River Baptist Church in Hazel Green. The puppet team is excited by the great new ideas we got from the workshop. We want to develop our blacklight puppetry because we feel it will really reach the youth better. We will be doing a fundraiser to buy more black light puppets and lighting but these are expensive. So be looking for our fundraiser.

Christmas Poinsettia Sale

The Youth will be selling poinsettias as a fundraiser. One for $15 or two for $25. Please indicate if you prefer red or white poinsettias. You can fill out this section of the newsletter and put it in the offering plate on Sunday or give to Sherry Newton or sign up in the narthex.
