Greetings!
Thank you to everyone who helped make last Sunday a very special day at New Life. Thanks to the Trustees for all their hard work, to everyone who brought food for the reception, for Thames and all who helped her set up, decorate and clean up the reception, to the choir and Susan and Water's Edge for great music, to Kelly Saylor for a great Stewardship Moment and to everyone who contributed their time, talents and presence!
This Sunday, we find ourselves among the congregation of the Israelites once again. Our Scripture from Exodus finds them in the wilderness preparing to build the Tabernacle.
20 Then all the congregation of the Israelites withdrew from the presence of Moses. 21 And they came, everyone whose heart was stirred, and everyone whose spirit was willing, and brought the Lord's offering to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the sacred vestments. 22 So they came, both men and women; all who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and pendants, all sorts of gold objects, everyone bringing an offering of gold to the Lord. 23 And everyone who possessed blue or purple or crimson yarn or fine linen or goats' hair or tanned rams' skins or fine leather, brought them. 24 Everyone who could make an offering of silver or bronze brought it as the Lord's offering; and everyone who possessed acacia wood of any use in the work, brought it. 25 All the skillful women spun with their hands, and brought what they had spun in blue and purple and crimson yarns and fine linen; 26 all the women whose hearts moved them to use their skill spun the goats' hair. 27 And the leaders brought onyx stones and gems to be set in the ephod and the breastpiece, 28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the Israelite men and women whose hearts made them willing to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done, brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord. Exodus 35:20-29
- The congregation of Israel was building the tabernacle out of obedience to God who commanded the building of a tabernacle so God would dwell among them. We generally think of doing things out of obedience as a sad and oppressive giving, but notice the attitude of the Israelites-they are joyful! Why do you think they were able to give so freely and joyfully?
- What difference does it make to you to consider that obedience to God requires bringing the Lord's offering to the house of worship?
- What sorts of items were offered to God? What can we learn from the items the Israelites brought as a freewill offering to God?
- Notice the movement from the beginning of the passage where they are bringing the Lord's offering to the end of the passage where they bring a freewill (above and beyond) offering to God. What prevents you from wanting to freely give as they Israelites did?
-
In Chapter 36, we read:
1 Bezalel and Oholiab and every skillful one to whom the Lord has given skill and understanding to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded. 2 Moses then called Bezalel and Oholiab and every skillful one to whom the Lord had given skill, everyone whose heart was stirred to come to do the work; 3 and they received from Moses all the freewill offerings that the Israelites had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, 4 so that all the artisans who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task being performed, 5 and said to Moses, "The people are bringing much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do." 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp: "No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing; 7 for what they had already brought was more than enough to do all the work. Exodus 36:1-7
See you on Sunday!
